Just some general comments:

He was world No. 2 for 35 weeks

Lots of guys were #2.

Ranked in the world top 10 for 314 weeks.

Lots of guys did this.

Won the NEC World Series of Golf on the PGA Tour by 12 strokes.

The 1988 World Series was more exciting with Mike "radar" Reid beating Tom Watson in a playoff.

He lost about 2 years of this prime golf from 1995 to 1997 due to a misdiagnosed back injury. He was still ranked 9 in world about mid-1995 when he stopped playing. He couldn't walk due to the pain and then later goes on to win the 1999 Masters.

It's rumored he took medical advice from a golf web forum.  That's on him.

I have clocked up a lot of hours over a couple of decades watching Sandy Lyle. In all that time, I probably saw the event pictured below happen about six times.

Sandy Lyle

It is very interesting that Sandy Lyle only has 4 top 10 finishes in majors with 2 wins.

Seve Ballesteros on Sandy Lyle during his peak - "The greatest God-given talent in history. If everyone in the world was playing their best, Sandy would win and I’d come second.”

Chubby Chandler, the former journeyman tour player-turned manager, once said of Lyle 'He could turn up in a rain jacket, chuck a ball down on the ground, have a couple of practice swings, and whack it away with a 1-iron further than I could hit a pegged-up driver. And I wasn't short.'

As you say, its always a been a mystery to me why Lyle had such a perplexing record in Majors. That said, some of the most memorable and remarkable golf I've ever been lucky enough to witness first-hand was a mid- and late-80s Lyle in the World Matchplay at Wentworth. Match play suited him, certainly, but on a long, wet course he could go out and shoot 64 like he was shelling peas, stringing birdies and eagles together with ease. An amazing talent; such a shame that his game nosedived in the way it did, particularly on the back of what was a banner season for him.

It's all relative. There is such a thing as underperforming.

Imagine if Tiger had only 6 or 7 majors right now. Everyone would be (rightfully) saying 'What happened?"

I understand what you said but the premise was "It's hard to win anything if the putts aren't dropping."

It wasn't stating that Lyle underperformed given his talent.

Lyle won plenty.

My comment was a reaction to 'What do you really want?' and nothing to do with putts not dropping.

If he was as supremely talented as Seve and others said, then 2.5 majors is underperforming...

Lyle… thats a while back but he was on the radar when I first got into following tour golf, he not being too many years my senior. My feeling is that he faded away quite early, that his latter career on the tours didnt fulfil what the earlier years promised. Might be totally wrong. But it was cool to serve haggis on the champions dinner.

That's how my memory has it as well.  I had to sneak a peak in wikipedia to get the numbers, but he was 30 when he won the Masters in 1988, won once more on the PGAT in '89, and only four more times on the Euro tour, the last being in '92.  So basically 95% of his wins were from age 21 to 30.  And he didn't just stop winning at a young age, he stopped contending, never having another top 10 in a major after '88.  Heck of a swing though, no doubt about that--powerful, compact, efficient, all those good things.

Well, see, the right breast pocket is for your lighter, the left breast pocket is for your cigs, and the sleeve pocket is for the backup pack of matches in case your lighter goes out.  The 70s, man.  Heck of a decade.
