'Unique' Nickent putter - not sure what I have

I purchased this Nickent putter as I liked the appearance and was struck by the craftsmanship, but couldn't find any information about its origins. The putter reminds me of some of the Bettinardi designs that I've seen in the past (especially the face mill pattern and the screws that affix the copper insert) but I don't know if there is a connection. The putter feels fabulous so it has that going for it.

 

I have two questions:

 

1) What do I have in my hands? Outside of the obvious.

 

2) Do you believe the putter is a quality candidate for a refurb? If so, what would you do?

Nickent was a company that went out of business back maybe 10 years ago. They were more well known for their hybirds. That looks like maybe a higher end putter they made, possibly for Wilshire Country Club or the model is the "Wilshire?"

I can't really offer more than the above post.

 

I would say though, that she will lose a fair bit of weight in a resto to get her good looks back again - few gouges here and there.

This restoration would actually lose less than 3 grams off due the condition. So all in all not bad

This guy is doing my Scotty as I type. Having bullet backs put on and a matte DLC coating. Pricing is very fair and turn around time is about 4 weeks.

Jeremy's work is top notch and he appears to be a really good chap. I'll drop him a line and see what we could accomplish. Thank you for the suggestion. Given his work with insert Scotty's I'm pretty certain he could pull the insert and tackle the job.

Nice score PD, the face looks awesome. What kind of finish you gonna do for the resto? You could do it yourself and just leave it raw to rust, unless it’s made of SS. :)

As I was putting (edit: a slip of the putter tongue : ) one of the Little Peanut's to bed I began to think about re-finishing the head myself. I'm now reading this thread and giving my head a shake. I want to make sure the job is done right and will leave the task to a professional.

 

I believe the head is carbon, given the little bits of rust in the cavity, but am unsure. I'd like a finish that doesn't require any maintenance. I'd also like to have the insert re-finished, but know that the unique milling would be removed.

 

PS - fabulous job on your 'Scotty' refurb. Cheeko will be so pleased when you pass the putter on. He'll never know that the head is a replica.

I totally get wanting a maintenance free finish and carbon does rust, I’m the same way. Having a the pros it will make it look better than brand spankin new when you get it back and your arm won’t be sore haha, plus it gives you way more options for finishes. I can’t wait to see it all done :)

 

Thanks for the kind words Sir, it is coming along nicely and it’s been fun to work on. Kinda sucks that it turned out to be a Replica but like you said, he’ll never know the difference and will love it just as much as if it were genuine, so it really makes no matter in the end. Lesson learned for me though in buying RH clubs, much like Horacio Caine, I won’t be fooled again ;)

1) Black Jack finish OR Super Nickel.

 

2) Leave the face mill as is OR have the entire face re-milled.

If it was me I’d probably go with Super Nickel and leave the face milling, but I’d have the sight line removed if possible. But the black finish with the copper insert would look really cool together too. It would be a Tough decision :)

Yeah, everything about that putter just screams "1999, early 2000's Bettinardi" to me. I'd almost be willing to bet on it.

Decisions made (after assistance from the PeanutsMommy)

 

Black Jack matte finish with a full face mill. Black chrome shaft and leather pistol grip awaits. The head currently weights 346 grams so it will be interested to see what's lost. Jeremy indicated 1 - 2 grams in ding/dent removed and 3 in the face mill. May add a tip weight when the head is reshafted or leave the putter as is.

The insert couldn't be removed without damaging the screws and there was a fear that replacements could not be found.

 

Black Jack finish is out. JRich is going to work his magic.

I had an older Snake Eyes 600P III putter with the EXACT face milling. Reminded me of the early Bettinardi honeycomb pattern. For the life of me this was the only google image I could find. Was there some relation? Doubt it, but milling was as they say in My Cousin Vinny...I-dentical!

In an attempt to make the head feel heavier I installed a UST frequency filtered shaft and left the black chrome for a future build. The leather Best Grip has been worked in pretty well as I've had it installed on two other putters. It is soft in the hands and feels tacky if I wipe it down with a wet towel before a round. The putter feels well balanced and the sensation at impact (on well struck balls) is sublime. I look forward to adding this beauty to the rotation when I'm finally able to play outdoors.
