JB Holmes Pace of play (merged)

golfer07840

Recommended Posts

He still made birdie, and I don't think Noren's shot would have been any less bad if JB had played faster. I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill. Yes, he took too long, but nobody commenting on this thread has ever been in that position before and I don't think any of us are truly qualified to judge.

He laid up, which means he was playing for T3 rather than trying to win, and he slowed up two guys who were in the mix for the win. Your "thoughts" about how Noren's shot might or might not have been different are immaterial.

Definitely on the side of "way too long". First and foremost, play to win on the 18th or go home. I get it if he is a newbie out on tour and need the $$ or finish to get some other starts, but not a veteran. Even if he puts in the drink and bogey's, he is still a top ten finisher with how the leaderboard stood at the time.

Also, how does it take 3 guys, shooting 72 or less, over 6 hours to play a round of golf? I get it, they are not going to play in 3.5 or 4 hours, but maybe 5? They had multiple groups go off at the start due to fog in the morning and the concern over darkness. How about they actually enforce timely play? Of course they had the group that included Day in front of them whom in the past has stated "I don't care about speeding up my game".

It just seems like a one way street out there. The fast players have no way of speeding up the slower players, and there is NO ONE trying to speed up the slow players.

The 2018 Shot Clock Masters in Austria will be the first tournament in professional golf to use a shot clock on every shot as part of the European Tour’s bid to combat slow play.

Earlier this year, the European Tour experimented with a shot clock on one hole at GolfSixes – a move which proved popular with both players and fans – and the concept will now be used for the first time at a European Tour event at the Diamond Country Club, from June 7-10, 2018.

In a marked difference to the GolfSixes model however, this tournament will embrace the Tour’s official timing policy (similar to policies used across the world of professional golf) over 72 holes, with an intent to showcase a European Tour event played at a more compelling pace.

In accordance with this official policy, each player in the 120-man field will have 50 seconds for the first player in a group to play any given shot, 40 seconds for subsequent players. Players will incur a one-shot penalty for each bad time incurred and these will be shown as a red card against their name on the leaderboard.

Each player will have the right to call two ‘time-outs’ during a round which will permit them twice the usually allotted time to play the shot.

First thing first.....the tour is accountable. Unless someone gets zipped for slow play...this will become more common

When on this earth did people stop being accountable for their actions?

JB should be accountable for his actions PERIOD.

IMO :-)

Has anyone seen a post-round explanation from JB? Can’t just be fedex / Ryder cup points.

No eagles to that pin and always tons of close wedges so it’s not that unreasonable to think he may have though he’d have a better chance at eagle laying up than going for it and just took some time to try and make the best decision.

When they said they're approaching 6 hrs for the round I was puzzled, but then I watched 18 play out (or not) and I figured out why. Disgraceful JB, just plain disgraceful and it might cost Noren the tournament.

So, basically, you had no idea the round was taking a long time until there was only one group left on the course and no other groups to show on TV. Sounds like the pace of play had virtually no effect on your viewing experience (save the additional 120-160 seconds we had to watch of JB on one of the most critical shots of his life).

I think that's the case. Plus the wind was confusing him too. But at some point (like three minutes earlier) you just have to make a decision and stick with it.

He may have wanted to go for it and was waiting for a wind that would allow him to have a chance at stopping the ball on the bottom level. But I agree you should be compelled to hit at some point. You can’t just sit there and wait for whatever you want to happen.

He said he didn't think he could get there with the 5w, and the 3w would put him through the stands. He was still trying to win but thought he had a better chance of knocking a wedge in the hole for eagle vs going for the green. That was per BJ but I call BS.

“It was between the 5-wood - I didn’t think it was going to get there - and the 3-wood would have gone back there where [Noren] was (over the green),” Holmes said. “That pin being in the bowl, I thought I had a better chance of holing out with a wedge than I did trying to chip one in.”

J.B. just became one of my least favorite golfers, what he did at the end was beyond slow and unsportsmanlike. I hope he apologized to everyone that was stuck behind him, he's worse than Keegan and Na combined.

I don't fault his thinking, he probably did have a better chance of holing a wedge than chipping in however the whole thing was absurd. A few minutes just to lay up into the rough!

I think he was shell shocked as to what was happening. He is making bogeys with wedges from the middle of the fwy. JB gave this tournament away. I've never seen anyone act so clueless.

It took him five minutes to decide that? honestly if your bag setup is like 30 yards between clubs then choke down on ur three wood? I can't do it reliably LOL but dude is a seasoned pro with elite talent.

I was at the the Wingfoot 2006 US Open and watched his playing partners and caddies run to the next tee because they were behind and on the clock. 12 years later and he's still slow and screwing over his playing partners.

He’s always been this way. I remember years ago at the WGC match play in Tucson, he took forever and Johnny Miller just ripped him as he stood there unable to pull a club and go. Being publicly shamed then made no difference and it won’t now.

The tour is terrified that a slow play penalty stroke will determine the winner of a tournament and they’re never going to make a substantive change to enforce the rules.
