Titleist 718 new thread - AP2 only

I had the 716 ap2 and did not get along well with them. Looking from above these irons look much better to me; if anyone has olayed the 716 and now plays 718,have you found any difference in terms of turf interaction?

I am trying to determine whether the ap2 just don't suit me, or whether it was just the 716 version that threw me off. For reference I have played my best with a little thinner sole (s55, 0311t) but I am looking to get a tad more forgiveness and have always liked the ap2 compared to the others in this iron class (919f, apex pro).

I did not care for the 716s either, but I really enjoy the 718s. I thought the 716s was a little off for me, nothing special. The 718s are forgiving, feel fantastic, and are very consistent. In my opinion, they are worth trying.

...the changes to the 718 ap2 ... they ... moved the cg up in the 718 to lower the spin and launch a bit...

Can anybody "in the industry" confirm or dispute this statement? I don't mean to suggest that either Longbomber or his cited source are full of it. Rather, simply looking for a second source as the technical specs of the actual clubs this year seem a bit harder to come by than they have been in the past and most of the published press is a fairly lazy "remains a good classic club with a new look..."

Maltbys measurements confirm this. Low key a high moi, too. Funny how Titleist is perceived as a players club, yet consistently has higher mois than the traditional game improvement companies.

That's really interesting. If that's the case the 716's must be spinning off the charts. I was consistently 3-400 revs higher than most everything else I tried with my 718 AP2's. My 7 iron average was in the high 6/ low 7s. My average for other stuff was like 6500 with some even lower than that.

That's good to hear. I'm thinking the PX LZ 6.0 in the AP2 718 could be a really good fit for me. I love that shaft.

Do the 718s have a ground leading edge like the 716 CB do? I gamed the 716 CB for a bit and loved the turf interaction but they could be a tad unforgiving at times. I really liked the 716 AP2 and I have accumulated some serious store credit so I am considering going back to the Titleist route.... Love the looks of the 718 AP2 but could definitely game the 716s again... but if the 718s have that ground leading edge, I may have to give them a try.

So I loved the 716 CB leading edge and I now have the 718 AP2 and IMO, they have exactly the same leading edge which is why I like them so much. You get a more forgiving head than the CB with a perfect edge, Titleist did a really good job with the 718 AP2 version.

Just got "fit" (i.e I fit myself because the local big box guys have no idea what numbers are optimal) and the PX LZ 6.0 in the AP2 head was AWESOME. I wasn't swinging all that well because winter, but I was getting around 155 carry with 6500 rpm back spin, 31 yards peak height, 48 descent angle and great dispersion. I'm a little worried that when my swing gets quicker I might overspin the ball but for now I don't mind. In summer that 155 should push out to 160-165 in the air which is perfect for my 7 iron and the feel was absolutely PURE. Picking them up in mint condition on Monday. Can't wait!

Saw your earlier post about comparing the AMT White vs Project X LZ 6.0. All I can tell you is I LOVE the PX-LZ and didn’t like the AMT at all.

Only have a couple rounds on my clubs but my last was my best ball striking round in years, pin high all day, carded 4 birdies, all inside 20 feet. Absolutely love these clubs!

(Full disclosure, I have AP3’s in the 4 and 5 iron with the same shaft, love those too).

Playing golf for the first time in two years! I hurt my back pretty bad lifting. I am a *100* golfer now, super slow speed.../sigh so frustrating!

I had always used blades.... as I was raised on blades. Dad wouldn't let me use anything else. So never bought into new tech...

I picked up a set of AP2's on i95 and they are wonderful. I kinda feel like I am cheating though. Every single shot is a good hit. How much larger is the sweet spot you think??

<going to a swing coach that specializes in back injuries to fix my speed, I can still drop the ball where I want it just sooooo short it's sad with blades..super bummed>

Wish me luck, my goal is to be breaking into 80s by the end of summer

Sounds really tough, but you're taking the right approach. Good luck!

It sounds like you're in the same distance range as me with them. I'm curious as to the longest iron you play in the set - with some I go to 4 but thinking with these I need to replace 4 with hybrid.

The set I'm picking up is 4-GW. Pretty excited it was a custom order for a pro at a course near me but he unfortunately threw his back out and can't play for a while so is moving them on. He's played 9 holes with them a couple of times and they're like new. I won't play the 4i for the most part. I have 816 H1 hybrids that I use set at 20 and 24 degrees to replace 3 and 4 irons. When it's windy I like the 4 iron but in general I get better results with a hybrid. The AP2 4 is very bladed I find and although I can hit it it is nowhere near as forgiving on misstrikes. I have toyed with the idea of getting a TMB or something to replace it but that isn't in the cards budget wise right now.
