Article : being a cart girl is a sexist nightmare

Recommended Posts

How would you behave if a family member is with you? Would you want your daughter to work there? Some people don’t mind if their daughter uses their “assets” to earn a bigger income, some would be mortified. But again if there is a problem the clubs management needs to address it.

My family members are free to choose whatever profession they desire. I would hope my daughters would be smart enough and strong enough to leave an abusive environment, not go back year after year.

So your solution for your daughter would be to tell her to leave a job she likes, and comes with some nice perks. Or put up with adult men behaving inappropriately.

As I said before, that is not a true choice.

No, not at all. I wouldn't tell her anything. She is smart enough to make that decision.

Yes, it is a true choice. People should learn at an early age that they will constantly be making such choices in their lives. It is quite common for people to choose more money over a more comfortable job. That's life.

really, please don't worry about this much people. 'toxic masculinity' will be gone soon enough. after they complete brainwash of the masses gender neutrality will be fully achieved. and then it'll just be the 'cart person' standing there.

"Toxic masculinity." What a load of BS. I would hazard a guess that industries such as roofing, construction, garbage hauling, etc., are male dominated. You don't see women flocking to these occupations, just "toxic males". Who cuts the grass? Takes out the trash? Shovels the snow? Who goes to war? The "toxic male".

The only way to prevent "toxic masculinity" is to change the genome of the male of the species. We are wired a certain way. It's not toxic. It's biology.

That all said, the "toxic male" can still be kind and respectful. But to be labeled as "toxic" simply by virtue of one's sex is misguided at best and destructive at worst. Why not criticize a tree for being too tall, or a bird for flying too low?

The idiocy being bruited about today is absolutely breathtaking.

That is not what the phrase means. And I expect you know that.

Woooooooosh!!!!!!!!

That's the sound of his sarcasm flying over your head.

rats, I believe Sean's to be only an addendum to my initial, I do not believe at all my post being completely lost on him. and to clarify I wasn't being totally sarcastic, but more kind of dismissive. I for one am completely puzzled by the willy nilly agenda of those trying to impose this on us. I really haven't heard a clear explanation from anyone what the purpose/ benefit is of all a sudden erasing the male, and by proxy erasing biology. all I know is I am personally not signing up for the subscription to it. edit: anyway, I started this side conversation (inadvertently), please let me ask to just end it before we get some "things are getting too political" clean-up on this thread from the mods... now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

You are correct Kenny. I didn't take it as sarcasm.

How about taking a step back and thinking about why this job has to be filled by attractive young girls. It's a sexist concept to begin with tbh. Maybe we should start there

Nice avatar

thanks

pop star/celebrity/model vs cart person .. i'm guessing you dont recognize her .. just a bit of a different profession

still begs the question why the cart person has to be a girl and preferably attractive and what that means to you or me.. as a point of discussion.. i like pretty girls too .. thats obvious aint it? .. so the job itself has some built in issues

Yes it is obvious, but ogling Kpop girls is also derived from a "sexist concept". I just found it odd you take issue with one, while enjoying the other. Hence my post.

If you're OK with them both, and were just making the point for discussion sake, well then that makes sense.

i appreciate the female form.. you may be oogling .. i think i can separate that from what we're talking about here. i can broaden my definition of sexism beyond the obvious. i'm not a robot i like hot chicks as much as the next guy but i dont hit on/assault or whatever girls half my age because their selling beer and wearing whatever they want to wear on a golf course where there are actually women customers as well. i'm not so basic as to not be able to appreciate sexiness in a woman and yet not behave like a cretin around them. i'm going to assume you can discern the line.

A customer "hitting" on a cart girl (or waitress, etc.) is never appropriate, because of the power imbalance that naturally results because the customer can choose to give or withhold tips, which may be her livelihood. She cannot react to being "hit on" in the way she might if that tip wasn't being held over her head. Her tip should be based on the quality of her service, not on whether she flatters the customer by pretending to be interested in his flirtations. Rewarding cart girls with tips because they "play along" is basically men paying women to flirt with them in order to get that little thrill. It always seems pretty pathetic to me.

I have decided to be the most morally outraged out of everyone in this online community. For all you amateurs in the realm of sensitivity and moral relativism, I up the ante. Come at me. Respectfully of course.

Obviously intended as snark, but how "morally relative" is the concept of treating everyone with respect and dignity until they demonstrate they don't deserve it?

Micro aggression

Thank you for noticing. I have been feeling awfully aggressive lately.

It's more than micro but I didn't want to set you off any additionally. Whoa Nelly.

Good resolution for this year's golf season : if you act like those guys, maybe don't.

I joined a club last year where the guys know the regular cart girls. I was pretty astounded at some of the behavior I saw. . .she never mentioned this happening in the article, but some dudes literally getting the girl out of the cart and getting a hug ("come on. . .gimme a hug."). Let me tell ya. . .if you're a sweaty 60 year old, and you think the cart girl wants to give you a hug, you have probably mis-read her congeniality. There's a power imbalance with these girls that does not allow her to tell you to f*ck off.

I'm not trying to be anyone's knight in shining armor; I just think a good rule of thumb when interacting with a cart girl is, "if my daughter or wife saw me act this way, would she be embarrassed?"

Good for you.

Anyone who thinks it's okay "because the girls have come to expect it" should take a closer look at themselves.

or they could just go over to www.sugarbabes.com, or any of the dozens of places where sugarbabes find their sugardaddies.... you are painting this one with way too wide of a brush

As a part-time golf course employee for over 10 years, I’ve seen some ridiculous behavior by grown men toward cart girls. Most of the cart girls we’ve employed are college students looking to make some extra money. They are usually attractive and friendly - a combination that has many men reaching deep into their pockets. Usually it just requires the attractive young girl to be nice and smile while filling beer orders.

However, we have employed a few girls that seem to love the attention they get from our male clientele. Some would go out of their way to dress in revealing clothing, be sexually flirtatious, and make suggestive comments in an effort to get more tips. I suspect some of these girls may also have issues that drive them to seek male attention.

From what I've seen that isn't correct. From what I've seen, Sean2 has a very simple plan in place; treat everyone kindly whilst having a plan to kill every last one of us.

I'd be shocked if it was any different.

I suspect "playing along" by pretending to be interested in someone's fishing story feels pretty different than "playing along" by pretending to care about the sexual stories and innuendo of middle-aged men. Again, we should treat everyone with respect and dignity. It's really not that radical.

6 pages in and I am amazed.

Anyone normalizing sexist behavior to a young girl whose sole purpose is to pour drinks is unbelievable to me.

Sure, some play the game to make more money, but just because they play the game doesn't mean it is OK for the guy.

This is crazy talk. I am not a snowflake, but I am a parent, and there is simply no place for this.
