Time to replace my Ping i20 irons - what should I look at this season

I have ping i20 irons 4-GW with Nippon 95 shafts. Really like them but time to upgrade. I got these not long after a shoulder surgery so the light shaft helped but as I have gotten stronger the club is feeling a little too light and launching pretty high.

 

So I know I want a bit heavier shaft but what about heads? Suggestions on ones to look at this year in my quest. I want the same amount of offset or even a bit less would be great.

 

Any of you make the same journey?

 

I am a 9 handicap these days but working on swing this winter with my pro and this season.

Thanks. I have those 2 on the short list along with iblade. I have read that the JPX are much stronger lofted and the i200’s a bit.

I have been talking to my pro about a combo set idea. JPX? ping? cally? Interesting idea.

This. Same premise, with a bit more distance and definitely more forgiveness. I wish they were just more so for me. :(

If I were you I would also try the TM P770 and Wilson FG V6, those two irons get a lot love in that segment.

Look at the apex/apex pro combo set. They should be a little cheaper now (look on callaway pre-owned) and they're great irons. I switched from i25s.

Is there a difference in feel from the i20s and the iblades? I went from the Ping Eye 2 to the i20s. I don’t know if I ever fell in love with the i20s. I did get them with graphite shafts due to a shoulder injury

What did you see as far as differences between the combo and the i25.

I've had the i10, i15, i20, iE1 (twice), and the i200 (twice). The top of the bunch are the i200 and i20. The i20 was just such a solid stick and they were the first i-series iron that changed the way we view the i-series, IMO. Gone were the traditional PING hosel, new finishes, less offset, blended head sizes, etc.

 

The i200 is a better feeling (albeit by not much ... the i20's were heavenly). With the shaft options now available as stock options, it's almost impossible to find something that doesn't suit your game. That had been such a knock for years on PING was the lack of stock shaft options. Now you can get KBS Tour, Project X, DG, Project X LZ, DG 120/105, XP 95, Modus 105 ... on top of all the stock PING offerings that are also solid (AWT 2.0, CFS, and don't forget the Z-Z65).

 

Only the i20's made me skip a transition (skipped over the i25s).

After playing i20's for the last 3 to 4 yearsl, I just switched to the 765's and I couldn't be happier. Similar forgiveness between the two sets but the 765's are longer, more consistent, and feel awesome.

If you aren’t afraid to take a chance and aren’t stuck on going though a fitting, MP15s with Project LZ shafts might be the ticket. $359 on EBay. Forgiving, taditional lofted and very classic blade. Very happy with mine and going from 105g CTL to the 115g PX LZ feels awesome.

I just picked up a set of the 15s Belmont mentions in the post above, and am waiting for them to arrive. They were such a good deal that I could not pass them up.

 

That said, I’ve hit a bunch of irons recently and was (surprisingly) leaning towards the G400. I’ve been a blade/ players cavity guy for the better part of 15 years, but was really impressed with the 400s. Loved the i200s also, but came away thinking that the Gs offered everything the i200s offer, but win a bit more distance and forgiveness. Paired with the Modus 105s, they were pretty amazing irons. I may still get a set!

The apex are definitely longer. The pro irons (8 and below) are surpringly forgiving, workable, feel great and are fun to hit. The normal apex irons are forgiving and long, but Imo don't feel as good as the i25s. Also, the pro irons are not durable at all, especially compared to ping clubs. Overall, they're definitely a better looking, longer club, the pro series feel great, I'm still getting used to the 7 iron and above feel. Make sure you get the right fit clubs for you. I had to have the lie angle adjusted, pings dot system is much easier than how everybody else does it, especially if you buy used.

Thanks for the feedback. I hit the regular Apex CF16 last year ... not a fan of the look and seemed to be hot but not consistently hot - if that makes sense. I like the look of the JPX , i200 and the iblade (all I have really seen so far). I do like the idea of a combo set but I ma thinking a split at the 7 iron. i200 and iblade don't seem to flow together so we will see.

Leaning towards Mizuno to change things up since I have been playing ping for 8 yrs.

 

The fact that many tour players choose mizuno when they are in between contracts def says something about their products.

Did you do the forged version? If so, any reason to not try the Hot metal?
