Sir Nick Faldo Pump drill........help......

Here is my problem, I practiced this drill, and it greatly helped my ball striking. SW - 8 I can take a normal swing. 7-6 iron, kinda. Once I get to longer clubs, I can only 'pure" it, if i start my swing like the drill. Especially with the Driver.

 

It looks silly, but the ball is going straight, and far. I can feel that I am hitting it square, except, I can not make it work from taking a normal backswing.

 

Was going to ask Mr Faldo, except, no way to get an email to him.

 

Was wondering if any of you players / coaches out there had a thought of how I can turn this drill and the wonderful results, into my normal swing?

That's my favorite drill. It's hard to do it on a regular swing, so I just pulled elements of it into a pre-shot waggle. The key to success is really feeling where the club should be at the top of the backswing. I don't feel the rest really matters all that much. I stand at address, do the wrist-c0ck and take it back to the the top, and then just return to address and pull the trigger from there.

Continue doing this drill, and I guarantee you'll run into another instructor who will tell you that you're manipulating the club too much with your hands and setting the club too quickly. He'll tell you that you need more extension on your backswing and a wider arc.

Not only that, but if you do it as prescribed, the clubface is wide open. There are some that can play from there but not really a strong position to play from IMO.

dont really care what other instructors say, ball flight and flush contact has never been better........

 

questions isn't what others are going to say, question is why does it work when I start from that position, but I can NOT replicate when I address the ball traditionally?

 

Also, I dont care how it works, if i can hit it 260-270 straight, my scores are going DOWN.....

 

I am 45, 12 handicap, and have always struggled with driver consistency.........

Faldo sure did a lot of pumping while he was on tour and after... more than Tiger even...

Sorry, but if you don't care how the golf swing works, I can't help you. Faldo's drill is just that -- a drill. It's not a miniature version of the golf swing. He liked it, because it gave him a sense of how he wanted the club to feel at the top as he flattened his swing plane. But, if you actually swing that way, you'll set your hands too early and probably release too early.

Without video no one is going to be able to tell you anything of substance. Is all guesses.

It might be that with the longer clubs, the drill helps you take it back a little more to the inside?

great drill. just hve to do it literally like 1000 times to really have it affect ur swing

I tried it once and hit it on a rope about 10 yards longer than I had in the year previous. I get what you are saying, though, about long term change.

sounds like your takeaway and early backswing are causing you problems....maybe you aren't doing it right and you are not able to duplicate the feeling of the drill.
