Removing alignment line from flange?

Recommended Posts

Picked up an old Scotty Newport Select with a milled face (no insert) and an alignment line on the flange in the back. Planning to get it refinished and repainted.

Was curious if anyone has had the alignment line on the back flange removed / sanded / milled away? How did it turn out? Is that something that Continental, BOS or Golfworks can / will do? Could ask them but thought I’d tap into the wisdom here first.

Should emphasize that I prefer lighter putters (335-ish) rather than the standard 350 that we get nowadays, so the marginal weight loss is not an issue.

Thanks in advance.

On my Anser 2 I cover it up with lead tape. But on an 8813 I'm slowly restoring I will fill the sightlines by welding material into them.

Give Tom Slighter an email and ask him about this. He is a very talented welder and also a top machinist in the putter world. I think if anyone can do it, Tom's your guy. It is not anywhere near as simple as one might think, but at the same time, it's just metal, ;).

Tell Tom that LaMont sent you.........but be prepared if he says, "That doubles the cost." LOL!

Thank you all. Totally realize that its not just a matter of taking some paint stripper and removing the line. In terms of weight loss from milling or sanding the flange down, am fine with a lighter head. In fact, would prefer a lighter one to the usual 350 - 375 gm heads that come standard these days.

Will reach out to Continental Golf and Tom, and see what they say.

Any word on if they can do that or not? I wanted to do the same thing

I spoke to Continental golf. Putter is en route to them right now and we will discuss when they get it and have a chance to see it in person.

They did say that they have a circular milling machine so cannot get into the back cavity to mill it down.

Will report back once we have a game plan in place.

Ok sounds good. Was it one of the Newport’s before deep milling you were sending in?

I actually talked to a machinist/metal worker friend of mine about doing this. Sent him a few pictures and he said he could probably mill the flange line level with the rest of the flange. He’d have to see it in person though.

I’d have to find out what it would look like after it was milled level before doing it because there’s no going back. Not sure if he can keep the beveling going from the flange to the bumpers either.

Obviously the finish would be removed in that area. So I’d have to send it somewhere to be refinished. Depending how bad it looks.

What type of refinish do you have in mind? Looking at the tiny pinholes, plus the missing JB weld at the edge of the flange leads me to believe there is more filling to be done?

Are you planning on welding a neck of some sort on that back end or just doing a port for a double-bend shaft?

Love to see a piece in midstream of a project.

Share what your vision is, if you get a chance.

I filled my ghost spider line with JB weld. Worked nicely. Painting it later this week. Maybe I’ll post a pic after the paint if it’s not embarrassing.

Just received an inexpensive airbrush today to try out. If it stinks I’ll strip it again and send it to someone.

Can you upload some before pics too if you get a chance?

Best method I have found is testors paint that matches the finish close, fill level then repeat process until flush. Looks way better than the JB weld jobs I have seen. You could weld in but you will still have ghosting. If it bugs you that much why not just get a putter without a sightline?

Lamont,

Still have a lot to work to do on the guy for sure. This was my first run with the job weld. Need to fill again and make sure I get the back end. I wanted to get a short neck welded on but that is way above my knowledge base. I was more or less curious of the job weld would work

Most brands don’t even make putters without sight lines. At least the head shapes I like

Ha! Yes. Too many of the lines are quite large. Like my ghost spider. The whole top of the head. I like it to actually align the putt, but as soon as I take it back and the line starts to pivot to the right it messes with my head!

My buddy says to ignore it and focus on the ball but I can’t. Hard as I try, I can’t. I see it turn. I tried making it black on the black head first. That definitely helped, but I still saw the line move.

Now I need to pick paint. My buddy owns a body shop, so any automotive paint in the world is an option. I’m thinking that I like that slightly odd bright blue that BMW uses. Almost sky blue, but not quite. Porsche has a “chalk” that I like as well. Sort of a very light gray with a hint of blue in it.

Yeah, I try to ignore it too but then I’m thinking about ignoring the line and not the putt lol

The early Newport Selects had no alignment aids and were naked.

Iteach is correct in previous post. You can get a Newport select without the flange sightline. I have one in black mist. I’d offer it to you but I actually added a small top sight line. LOL!! I bought it specifically because I hate the big flange lines however.

Sell it and get yourself a naked one. Both Cost and effort considered, its certainly easier than trying to remove one. Get on the Bay and start looking.
