Removing alignment line from flange?

I filled my ghost spider line with JB weld. Worked nicely. Painting it later this week. Maybe I’ll post a pic after the paint if it’s not embarrassing.

 

Just received an inexpensive airbrush today to try out. If it stinks I’ll strip it again and send it to someone.

Got a couple pics. Not quite done. It needs another wet sand and one more coat plus a clear coat for durability. I used the inexpensive airbrush kits you can get on amazon or Ebay. 3 coats so far. You could never get a finish like this with a spray can. Comes out way too heavy.

 

It’s certainly not perfect because I didn’t entirely strip the old paint to the metal. It was a chipping mess before I started. I just gave every surface a good sanding with 180 grit to give the new paint a slightly rough surface to adhere to. Painting 101. I was going to leave the small top line that I had milled into it at first, but then decided against it.

 

As I said previously, The fill was done with JB weld and sanded out dead smooth. I made a tiny little sanding block out of a scrap piece of trim molding and taped the sand paper to it. I shot one coat of primer first as well before the paint. The paint is Marina blue BMW paint with a tiny bit of white pearl int it. My buddy owns a body shop and he mixed me a couple ounces.

 

The wet sanding between coats was with 400 grit. In retrospect, it would be well worth it to spend a modest amount to have a professional place do it, less than 100 bucks I’d guess, but I sort of enjoyed the experience of messing with it myself.

I talked to Tom about removing the site line from my sigma g kushin. After photos and discussion he said he wouldn't be able to do it, frown.

 

Really wish I would habe spent a bit more money to get a custom ping sigma g kushin with no site line.

Tom Slighter for sure. Also putter Spa can do this through bastain milled then finish it, or you can just contact Kyle at bastain if you don’t want a finish. Orrrrr you can just buy a mannkrafted and fo-get about it.

Any luck lately with removing a site line? I’ve contacted a few companies and they all turned it down. I really love the look and feel of the putterbut I keep finding myself looking at the flange line and it’s distracting.

Sounds like what you want is to turn a Newport 2 into a Newport

 

If you bought a studio select Newport you'd get a putter head with 320 g head (no weights) instead of 330 g in the select

 

If you want deep face milling you could get the face mulled which would also drop a little bit of weight

Just offering up a different option, because as others have said, it sounds like awkward work...

 

I had a sight line added to the top line of a studio select Newport and one thing Kyle said is that it's easily reversible on the topline, not so much on the flange (doable, but cost would be higher).

Wow--in all the discussion of removing flange lines, I think this is the first pic I've seen of one that was done by one of the pro refinishers mentioned. Looks excellent, thanks for sharing that.

Best method I have found is testors paint that matches the finish close, fill level then repeat process until flush. Looks way better than the JB weld jobs I have seen. You could weld in but you will still have ghosting. If it bugs you that much why not just get a putter without a sightline?

 

Most brands don’t even make putters without sight lines. At least the head shapes I like

 

Ha! Yes. Too many of the lines are quite large. Like my ghost spider. The whole top of the head. I like it to actually align the putt, but as soon as I take it back and the line starts to pivot to the right it messes with my head!

 

My buddy says to ignore it and focus on the ball but I can’t. Hard as I try, I can’t. I see it turn. I tried making it black on the black head first. That definitely helped, but I still saw the line move.

 

Now I need to pick paint. My buddy owns a body shop, so any automotive paint in the world is an option. I’m thinking that I like that slightly odd bright blue that BMW uses. Almost sky blue, but not quite. Porsche has a “chalk” that I like as well. Sort of a very light gray with a hint of blue in it.

Not sure if you need it, but that color is called Laguna Seca Blue

not sure if he's still in business - i had this done back in 2008. i checked out his business facebook page, doesn't look like there's much recent activity.
