The first time you (intentionally) broke your club?

Recommended Posts

Still haven't had the first time but I can think of a couple situations it could have happened with a "toss" and darn lucky it didn't, was embarrassed enough after tossing. Out of my system years and years ago - strangely as a younger person would have never occurred to me so probably some stupid "adult" frustration creeped into my time on the course.

I've thrown clubs in the past that resulted in a broken shaft that when I threw during my fit, I didn't intend to break. Still was my fault. I've had enough time that while the club was in mid-air I was thinking "please don't break, please don't bre..."---snap. Followed by deep sigh of regret and throwers remorse.

I've only intentionally broken one club in a rage and it is the single most embarrassing thing I've ever done on a golf course. There's very few things I've done in my life that I look back on with as much shame as I do that moment.

I don't think I've ever "purposely" broken a club. Now I have broken my fair share, conservative estimate would be 200 shafts as I was always a quick outburst of frustration and move on kind of guy until about 6 years ago.

Now with saying that I'm not sure what I expected would happen when I would slam one into my bag, paul bunion a tree or just tomahawk one 100 yards in whatever direction I was facing. But I can honestly say I never purposely broke a club.

Nope. No broken or thrown clubs. I have thrown myself in a lake though. #Indian not the arrow

Same here

A great many wedges have been helicoptered in my time, a subset of which have accidentally hit carts or bags or trees. Luckily no breaks in my career thus far

Have you hit a person yet? What would be your reaction if someone tossed one and it hit you or damaged your equipment?

Never come within 100 feet of another person because I'm not a complete idiot.

What percentage? How would you feel if you did? You ( think) have the control to not hit someone or their equipment ( all while throwing clubs at carts and equipment) but not the control to be an adult and not throw things? Golfers are such a special breed.

Probably feel pretty crappy, hence why I don't do it when there are people around. I also was under the assumption I was an adult, I guess I missed the memo where being adult and making a decision on how I personally express frustration where mutually exclusive. Could you do me a favour and send me the newest version of the Adulting Guidelines so that I don't make any more such mistakes? I'm super excited about living up to your standards, random internet guy.

200 is quite a number, congrats on that. I’m awed.

Early 20s so probably 15 years ago I lost a few hundred bucks on the putting green and helicoptered my putter into a bench and then threw the head in the lake. Funny part of that one was the ball Dover guy came around about 6 months later and got the head out and left it in the pro shop. I worked there so all the other employees thought it was funny to leave it there for me the next time I came in.

Last time I threw a club probably 10 years ago, it slipped out of my hand and went the wrong direction about 45 degrees and almost clocked a buddy right in the back. Probably missed him by 4 inches. I felt terrible. Will never throw a club again.

About 43 years ago, was having absolute horrible day to begin with. 10th tee box, snap hooked drive deep into woods/ravine. Watching the ball head there, reached up grabbed head (already had grip in my hand. Pulled both ends tight across my shoulder and snapped the shaft in half. Told my group "I am done", left, went to the 19th hole and drank till they came in. Only intentional break ever.

Yup. I'll cop to it.

It was fifteen or so years ago. I was in early recovery from alcohol and opioid addiction. I shared a rented condo with another person in early recovery. He was my best friend in the world. We had been through more together than almost anyone else could ever claim. We played golf together at least twice a week in season. We were playing 2v2 matchplay versus a couple older guys. I choked (horribly) a putt that cost us a whole nine in an Nassau. It was the same week I had discovered he had relapsed and was shooting dope using rent money. I was dealing with the reality that I was losing my best friend and my primary ally in recovery, and he was giving me crap about missing a semi-gimme. On the next tee, I nuked a 3w OB, and he made a comment. I snapped the shaft over my knee and threw both halves into a pond.

I'm now 19 years clean and sober, and he's 13 years the same. I play off of 1.3 and he plays off of 2.8. We win much more often than we lose. And, all the time, I suggest that he owes me a club or two for that day. But I'll take the loss if it means we can still tee up together.

I understand it can be a challenge to stay clean and sober. Congrats to both of you. Keep it up.

Makes no sense to me at all.

If someone is not happy with the way they are playing with 14 clubs, do they really think they will do better with only 13?

Maybe if their car breaks down they should get out and kick it?

Can't get reception on their phone? Yea smashing it will help.

A good tradesman never blames his tools.

Comes down to whether or not you give inanimate objects names , personalities , and/or life. If you do it’s perfectly reasonable to break one once In a while to put the others on notice .

I've snapped 2 5 woods over my knee. Coincidence that they were both 5 woods.

First one was a really bad day, fed up playing alone.

Second time I had a new shaft come in and was waiting for me at home. Was struggling with it on the range. And was playing brilliantly when I pulled out the 5 Wood and launched one on. Snapped it right then and there. Wasnt even mad. First one was pure rage, second one I was like "well don't ever want to hit this shaft again"

Both of these with the past 3 years

Not proud of it, but I snapped an LW over my knee many moons ago. On a short par 4, I absolutely smoked my 3 wood to LW distance. Proceeded to lay sod over it and in one move snapped it.

My playing partner had just started his own little club fitting corner in his garage and pounced on it. It was fixed in a day, but I felt like a jerk for some time after.

Realized I wasn’t good enough to blame and break clubs, never bagged a 60* wedge again.

I've done this twice that I can remember off the top of my head, but I'd venture to say that it has happened more often than that. The first time is the one that I will never forget, and the whole day is a memory in of itself.

it was the last match of our high school career before sectionals and we had 5 seniors on the team. We graduated the Saturday before, so we didn't have to be at the school to get on the bus until like 3 pm that afternoon. Three of the other teammates and I decided we would get drunk prior to the golf match, but when the day came to partake in the drinking I withdrew from the occasion. I had never drank prior to this day, so I wasn't sure how I would react to alcohol being in my system. The other three guys got on the bus drunk and we headed to the golf match. We played in foursomes and 2 guys from each school would be in the group. I was playing in the #3 or #4 slot on the team during this match, so I was playing with one of the other guys from my school. I remember basically dragging him along as he was barely able to stand and walk during the match. We get to the #2 hole which is my last hole of the round (my group started on 3) and I am 2 over par. I had the round of my career going at this time and my dad was actually there to this happen! I was so excited, but I let my emotions get the best of me on the last hole of the round. The last hole is a pretty average par 4. It is a 90 degree dog leg right with lots of trees making it impossible to cut the corner and it goes onto a green that has a creek running in front of it. Basically hit a 200 yard shot off the tee and a 190 yard shot in and you can make par routinely. I hit my first ball high but far enough to clear the corner so I would have a good shot at the green. I hit a worm burner right into the creek and have to take a drop. I actually get this ball onto the green, and I think 2 putt and I am in the 30's for the first time ever. I was playing really well that day, so it shouldn't have been a problem. I proceed to 4 jack from 15 feet, and I end up shooting 41. I was livid. I end up cussing like a sailor, snapping my putter over my knee and throwing my ball across the road. Meanwhile my dad sees me throw this huge fit and he just walks off the course without saying a word. I knew he was really disappointed in me, and I just felt horrible about it. I had embarrassed myself and my dad who is my biggest supporter, and he is my favorite person in the entire world.

Anyways somehow we end up winning the match even though 3/5th of my team is drunk and I had a meltdown like a toddler. The other guy that didn't have anything do with our drinking plans ended up winning medalist with a 40 which as the first and only time he ever did that. The other 2 of the other 3 guys got kicked off the team, but we had already graduated so luckily there was nothing more the school did to them. They somehow convinced our coach that one of the guys was just sick and not drunk. I don't know how, but I was not paying much attention at the time. I was still seeing red after putting like a blind man. We ended up taking a 3 man squad to sectionals and didn't do worth a hoot. I think I shot 108 on a course that was much easier than the course I had shot 41 on previously that week. It was a really weird way to end my high school golf career.

Right off the 18th green...Putter. I’d just had a horrible putting round in which I’d been hitting the ball like Nicklaus in his prime. In a money game too...

Snapped it right over my knee only to look up and see my Dad watching from outside the pro shop.

Not a pleasant conversation with him.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was playing in a qualifier, I wanted to hit driver my caddy was trying to force me to hit 2 iron. So he snapped my driver, I asked for the three wood and he broke that too. We argued and I broke every club in my bag except the 7 iron. I played the back with only a seven iron and qualified.
