50 Win Phil?

Phil said he would win 50 times in his PGA Tour career when all is said and done. That’s another 7 wins. Do you think he can do it?

 

I say he has no chance. There is a good chance he never wins again, maybe 1 tournament..

Passing Walter Hagen on the all-time PGA Tour win list with 46 wins (3 more) is more achievable. But I think that will be a struggle as well. It all came together for one more week for Phil, but I can't see him winning with any consistency at 47.

He’s the best lefty of all time already, 50 would be cool but doesn’t seem very likely.

It's not likely but I certainly hope he does and I love that he has that goal in mind. It tells me he doesn't plan on playing the senior circuit anytime soon.

I remember Kenny Perry about winning 5 times in a little over year at the age of 48. Getting to 50 wins would require 7 more victories, so it's a pretty aggressive goal. It can be done, but realistically you have to think 45-46 is more likely. I would love to see 50 wins and a 6th major at the US Open.

He just beat a field of the world’s best players and has been in the hunt a lot lately. He also plays good when Tiger is in the spotlight, so I’m sure Phil wants to outshine Tiger for the latest comeback.

 

I wouldn’t bet against a guy as good as Phil reaching 50. I don’t care that he’s 47. He hits mid to high 170 mph ball speeds with driver and still has a sharp short game.

Phil is going to win like two more times on Tour, maybe even one major, and then he'll get to be 53 and he'll start competing on both the Champions Tour and the regular Tour, and he'll win like five more times with the graybeards (where he'll briefly dominate) and with a wink and a nod he'll tell Doug Ferguson "You know, I never said PGA Tour wins. I said 50 wins. Frankly, I put some of my Champions Tour victories ahead of my PGA Tour victories because, if you do the math, the field is much stronger than it was in 1995 at say the Northern Telcom Open. And I have done the math."

Phil is a confidence first type player. He feeds off the fans and feeds off of wins. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wins 2-3 times this year. This win will give him room to breathe as it was weighing on him. He had doubts for sure. Similar to federer breaking through last year at the Aussie open it gave him the confidence to pick up another major later in the year and another one this year. Until you do it again you have doubts. Tiger has doubts too.he hasn’t contended yet and we’ll see if and when he does how he handles it. I took Phil at his word last fall when he said he fixed his meds and felt better and had more energy to practice and here we are 6 months later and he’s a borderline top 3 player on tour right now. I doubt he falls off just like that. He’s worked too hard.

So why did it take PM 4 1/2+ years and 100 events to win again after winning the Scottish and British Open back to back in 2013?

With his showing so far this year I do not think his age is even relevant for the near foreseeable future. He is killing it. It may last 6 months, a year, who knows, it may last for 4.

 

Will he get to 50? It is not impossible at this moment to think maybe so. He has never been my favorite player, until about right now. I'm going to want him to win everything for a while...

I think Phil publicly stating such a goal reveals he is thinking long term and is determined to work hard over the next five years in his attempt to realize that goal. That should excite all golf fans.

King Phil will reach 50, no problem. He’ll add at least another two this year, as long as he doesn’t decide to go back to his “bombs away” swing with the driver. If he keeps it in play, he’s at least as good as the top guys out there.
