Swing Speed Increases

Recommended Posts

This question is mainly out of curiosity. I’ve recently picked the game back up after about a 4 year break. I was about a 10 handicap when I quit but never a long hitter. I’d say my driver swing speed was at best in the mid 90s. I was also quite fat, didn’t workout, etc. at this time.

Fast forward to now - still have a bit to go but I’ve been hitting the gym regularly, eating right and on my down from about 270 to 180 lbs (I’m 6’1”). I’m hopeful this will help me get my swing speed up to make me a bit longer off the tee.

Is it reasonable to pick up 15mph or so on driver swing speed with speed training and overall being healthier? I plan to use the SuperSpeed system for actual speed training. I’d like to get my driver speed in the 105-110 neighborhood.

The answer to the question, in your case, is yes. a 15mph gain is absolutely possible.

someone your size, with good mechanics and health, should have no problem topping 100mph, eventually reaching 110+ with the requisite fundamentals. Even with your previous weight, you were capable. Work on getting more flexible now that you are stronger and leaner, then take a lesson or 2 to get pointed in the right direction fundamentally, as that is the key.

Good luck!

Thanks - and yes I definitely plan to be taking lessons. I signed up for Monte’s golf clinic in Houston next month and plan to continue taking lessons from Chase Cooper after that to keep working on game. I just purchased a Skytrak and garage golf simulator so I can have an easy place to practice every day as well (can be hard to find time to get to the driving range from where I live).

Thats a quality combo. Im guessing you will find yourself playing well and hitting it plenty far if you adhere to that plan.

This will be the key to faster swing speeds with less effort.

Congrats on the weight loss!

My feeling about speed is this: If you want it, you'll get as much of it as you can.

I feel 15mph is very reasonable.

I was 6'4" 300 and I am now 285 but much more muscular. My trainer (sister) really focused on my flexibility and core and I went from 102 to 112 swing speed in like 3 months of gym 3-4 times a week for an hour-1.5 hr workout. Gaining that core stability and little extra flexibility did ruin my golf game for about 2 months but I have adjusted and my handicap is even lower than before!

Now to fix my diet....

Absolutely, if you have a clear program and make sure to do the right type of workout, you can probably get the 15 mph in six months.

Lots of practice and determination and you can most likely get to 120 mph.

I went from 98 mph to 115 mph in six months after I got on the right workout program, did my drills and did the practice that I was supposed to do.

I've taken breaks from golf since I've started. Usually out of frustration. I picked the clubs back up about 6 months ago after taking a 4 years off. During the off time I started playing slow pitch softball with some buddies. Few years ago I was swinging around 112-114. I stopped by a golf galaxy the other day and I'm up too 119-121. I was actually in better shape before I took the break. The only thing I can attribute it too is better hitting mechanics and stronger core from hours of batting practice lol.

  • 3 weeks later...

I think it's possible. I'm 40, a small guy, 5'5" about 140. Slim narrow frame, short arms, everything. I haven't lifted weights in about 10 years. I did pick up mountain biking however. So, going 2-3 times a week on rides, I noticed things were getting heavier. 50lb bag of rice all of a sudden was tougher to carry than before I started riding. I was riding without any weight training, and without even drinking any protein after, so I'm sure I lost a lot of muscle mass.

Anyway, I picked up golf a little more than a year ago, and wanted to know how far I was hitting it. I go hit with my fat out of shape buddy with the shortest back swing ever. He's been playing decades but only gets out once or twice a year now. He's hitting about 280-300 total without working out or even hitting the range. Measured with a GPS. Mine are about 200 yards total. I buy a SSR (I know these read high but just need something to measure) and Swingman Golf Jaacob Bowden's program. I think I bought it last summer and haven't touched it :D

Last summer I measured my swing speed hitting actual balls and was topping out around 80-82. Pathetic! People kept telling me how great I looked (skinny, etc.) but I was thinking in my head, yea but my drives are short!

Anyway, I started two weeks ago. It's a pretty simple program, 4 days a week, 10-15 minutes a day. First two weeks I only did two days each because of time, soreness, and real golf. Hitting actual balls before starting I was around 82-84. Today I'm up to 95 hitting the ball. I hit 99 without a ball.

Granted, these are not swings I'd do on the actual golf course yet. They're all out swings while trying to hit the ball. Form probably suffers a little. Some great hits, some toppers, a few sliced over the fence (I should really hit from the far left as I suffer a slice occasionally).

If I can get to 105 actual (not SSR, and not max speed but controllable) on the course, I'll be ecstatic. That's my goal. A reliable 260+ yard drives and I'll be through the roof.

So I plan to maximize what I can with this program, then add some weight training etc. and see what I can get. Keep in mind, I probably lost a lot of power from losing muscle mass so my quick increase is probably just me gaining some of what I lost, back. I expected the quick gain because of that. I don't think I'm going to add another 10 in just two weeks. I hope I can though!

It's all about activating those quick fire twitch fibers. And then getting more of them.

I do notice tweaking my form a little produces drastic changes in swing speed. If I rush it, speed suffers. If I compose myself, get into a nice position, do a nice backswing, I max out.

Before anyone asks, no I'm not affiliated with Swingman Golf :D

relatively short student added 20mph with a single advice. 50meters to his driving 240 to 290m.

he complains he hit it to far now.

(adjusting to new game needed)

dont need gym.
