What length do you play your driver and 3 wood?

That said, there is something about the relative proportions of a 43.5" driver with a 460cc head on the end of it that just looks wrong to me. I've made up a few for fun, and I just can't see past the way the thing looks. It's just too big, and I suspect that somewhere in my brain I believe that having all that mass out there farther away from the axis of the shaft makes the club feel funny swinging it with all but the heaviest shafts in them.

 

You're not alone. The rationalization isn't really accurate - but of course knowing that is not going to change the level of comfort you have with the visual at address :-)

Driver came at 44.5" from the store and I've added some heavier weights, although this is also in part because I've moved to larger grips (midsize plus a couple wraps on the driver, jumbo on everything else). I had the 4w cut down slightly from stock and added a small amount of lead tape.

Wow, I'm a little surprised that there is a 2"+ gap between most people's Dr and 3w. I play 44.5" driver and 43.5" 3w. Distance-wise they are about 15 yds appart on a stock shot (Dr off tee and 3w off the deck). My 7w is 42.5".

 

I am currently experimenting with a 47" backweighted driver that I choke down a bit on. I wanted to see if the distance gain was substantial enough to offset the less accurate contact. Actually, I haven't had a problem finding the sweetspot on the club, but I haven't seen the kind of distance gains I expected. I used an Aldila X-torsion Copperhead 70X and weighted the club so that I get a D2 feel when gripping around 46". Total weight is 10 gms heavier than my stock driver and I adjusted the thickness of the grip so that it would feel just like my regular driver. On average, I get only 5-10 more yds with the longer driver (about 3 mph more CHS).

I've just had my new driver fitted with a 1/2 shorter shaft so 44.5 (Mavrik SZ diamana df 60)

Best decision I ever made that half inch allows me to get after it so much more and still be in control.

I tend to leave them long in case I want to tip trim a little later - but later usually doesn't happen and don't tip trim or shorten them up. Example being the 43.5 5W.
