Hottest faced driving iron

Recommended Posts

I’ve only tried the Ping G Crossover, the G400 Crossover and the Cobra One Length Utility.

The G was not very forgiving. The G400 is more forgiving and goes like a rocket from sweet-spot hits.

The Cobra OL is far easier to hit than either of the above, but perhaps goes 10/20 yards less than the equivalent Ping G400. The G400 has a much hotter face but to me is nowhere near as consistent.

Also a hotter face makes it much harder to use as a chipper from around the fringe.

I can't believe there isn't a lot of love for the TMB. I found the U45/65 to be too high launching, and while the Fli-hi had the right flight, I hit it short. Also, to me, the wider soled DI's are like one trick ponies; good off the tee, not so good off the deck.

The TMB 2 iron, paired with a Pro White 90, has been a rocket launcher off the tee for me, and is very easy to elevate off the deck.

Wishon 590DIH is .83COR and with the variable face thickness it will cover a larger area. Rules of golf forbid anything to be "hotter" and still legal.

Have you played the 590DIH?

I have a 21* that I built with an aero tech awi99 regular 4 iron shaft for my brother

Still have to get it out to the range to get a feel for it with some lead tape

Looking forward to it, but I don’t see myself playing anything other than my 22 and 25 hybrids

T-mb is a super popular club, youre right doesnt get much love on forums though. It's the clicky feel that is stopping it from being elite

Well, this thread prompted me to get a U65 off the Bay in my quest for the true ultimate DI. I swing driver 103-107 and so I went with the X-stiff Miyazaki, but I'm a little concerned it will be loose. But, if the head is as good as everyone says, I'll be able to tell (I hope) and swap to another shaft if needed.

I've bagged the 712U, 716 T-Mb, 718-TMB, Tour Preferred UDI (1 and 3), P790 UDI 2 iron and so I have a pretty decent sample size to compare it with

Thank you for your service. Yes that's probably the shaft to try. With similar speed to you, I had a srixon 4 hybrid with the stiff 70 gram Miyazaki and it couldn't have been a worse fit. It flew like a balloony 7 iron for me. Launch was 26-28 w spin in the 5s.

Why would a wide some hurt it off the deck? I would think it'd only help.

For me, irons with wider soles feel like they are easier to hit a little fat.

718 T-MB with Tour AD DI 95x has been crazy good from of the tee and the deck this year. A standard 220 meters shot with minimal risk of failure.

More than good enough on most holes.

Agreed. I have a 718 TMB 2 iron with Pro White 90 and I won't need to demo anything else!

It's a weird psychological thing because while I totally understand that feeling, its actually backwards from a physical sense. A wide sole will always "dig" less than a narrow one which will want to slice into the ground a lot quicker. We feel visually like the wide sole is easier to hit fat because I think we have this idea that we're trying to wedge/slide this piece of metal underneath the ball and that skinny little blade will squeeze right in there whereas the big chunky iron is going to clobber a bunch of grass and dirt on the way there. The reality is though that you have way more room for error with the big sole and way less with the small one. I've actually full on bounced the club off the ground when trying to hit up on a tee'd up shot with absolutely no ill effects to the shot itself because of the big forgiving sole. Had that been my 5-iron it would have not worked out so well.

I have been following this thread and interested in a DI for a while. I tried the U65 last week but hit it almost exactly the same distance as my set 4 iron off the deck. I really like Srixon clubs but I just wasn't wow'ed. When fitting a month ago I hit the hybrid best with a KBS prototype hybrid shaft and so found the Cobra King Utility with KBS prototype 95 for a good deal on the bay. Should get it this week. I am really in need of a low flying safe tee shot. Fingers crossed.

Definately mental, that's why I said "feel" like it's easier to chunk. Same reason my greenside bunker club is 58* with 4* of bounce.
