Tacoma/Seattle, Early June

This thread has been very helpful. My wife and I are flying from Dallas to Portland this summer, and flying back from Seattle. I got the ok to play at least 1 round of golf while up there. I really want to play Chambers Bay, but I like the other suggestions thrown out there.

One round of golf ? Chambers Bay of course. If you're up for walking the 18. Some walking between a few holes that could be a hike if one is not used to walk the golf course.

Thanks for continuing to pour in the feedback..

I think I noted above, but my plan for CB was to play the Twighlight on Wednesday, which will be $119.... still not worth it??

I would never shell out $300 again... i paid $275 to play the Plantation Course at Kapalua, and as cool as it is to watch on TV the holes I played, it just wasn't worth anywhere near that cost - that's when i decided I'd never pay that kinda money again...

I am from the Northwest and have played all the courses mentioned - Chambers, Home Course, Salish Cliffs, Golf Mountain.

If this is your one visit to the Northwest I would definitely play Chambers Bay.

It is not merely about the condition of the golf course (yes CB is in the process of moving to Poa greens) but rather the fact it has hosted a US Open.

Your golf buddies will have never heard about Home Course, Salish Cliffs and Gold Mountain. All generic no name courses of which there are thousand in the US.

How many other times have you played a course that has hosted a US Open?

+1

Especially if you're getting the twilight rate at CB.

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

I don't mind walking at all...I actually prefer it to riding. Looking at the average temperatures, it won't be hot, so I don't see walking being an issue, and when I walk and play, that's my exercise for the day. I have good golf shoes for walking as well. I stop walking in June in Texas...that's just too hot.

Chambers Bay is the way I'm leaning right now. We just need to figure out days that we're going so I can start planning when I'll be playing golf.

Unless, we get some really unusual weather, you might need to worry about it being too cold - lol.

I've looked at averages during June, and it will definitely be cooler than Texas. Rain gear, pants, cold weather compression gear, and pullovers will be brought with me, lol.

Turns out Chambers won't be in the budget. We've had some unexpected expenses come up, plus I have a trip with some buddies this summer in Scottsdale for some more golf. Looking at the other courses that have been suggested, there are plenty of great courses that I'll be able to play that will fit into the budget better.

you will still have a great golf trip and watch for deals on Golfnow and teeoff a couple weeks ahead. Gold Mountain seems to have a ton of deals online.

That's my plan. I frequent Golfnow quite a bit, and I figure the Seattle/Portland area will have some really nice courses that will be very different from what I've been used to in Texas.

One of my favorite courses outside of Nashville was a $25 hot deal at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, TN. It was about a 30-40 minute drive west of Nashville. Probably my favorite course that I've ever played, and it's one that I would be willing to pay good money to play. The next summer I went back to Nashville with my wife and played it again.

sorry you'll miss Chambers.... I'm looking forward to it... mid 60's - 70* is perfect in my eyes....

I agree about those temperatures being perfect weather. I will admit that I'm a wuss when it comes to cold weather. I love any weather where I can be outdoors in short sleeves of some sort. I think that 60-70* will be a shock to my system in June...by that time, I will be used to temperatures in the 90s here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, lol.

I figure the most I would need for that weather is my lighter long sleeve compression stuff and a short sleeve rain jacket. My wife will be loving that weather.

Chambers usually runs a fathers day deal for $100 that you can use Sun-Thurs. May want to join the mailing list to grab that. I can't remember exactly when they list it but I want to say mid-late May? I usually pick this up because its a hell of a lot better paying that than whatever they charge in the high season.

In regards to other courses: I can't recommend the Home Course and The Olympic course at Gold Mountain enough. 2 of the best public tracks on the west side of the state that regularly hold championships there, and VERY affordable. The Cascade course at Gold Mountain is a snoozer. If you opt to play 36 at GM, play Olympic twice. I havent played Salish Cliffs but I have heard great things and it is on my list to play this year.

If I see the deal I will come back and send a link!

plan for possible rain with rain gear FYI.

I was already thinking about that. I have a rain suit that I bought when I was coaching softball, and for days that it rained on the course. I haven't got much use out of it, but it's definitely going with me this summer. I also have a short sleeve wind jacket that is good for light rain.

Thanks for the heads up on the Chambers deal. I just signed up for their email list. Maybe it'll workout on me playing there.

I just looked up the Olympic Course, and that course looks beautiful. I have also looked at Salish Cliffs and the Home Course. They all look like fun courses to play. My wife and I still haven't finalized flights and other accommodations, but once we do, I'll be able to narrow down my choices based on when and where we're staying.

OP one thing I'd say is if this is a once in the foreseeable future opportunity, I wouldn't look to save a few bucks with their sunset rate, I'd just pay the $229 and get a nice morning teetime, with no worries about finishing or otherwise working your sched around getting a 3pm teetime.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't need anything more than what Chambers provides out of a golf course, yes I've yet to see good greens (they remind me of what Bandon's sometimes look like in the winter and if they are even worse then yes it's a bit of a bummer) but I think the teeshots and approach shots you get to hit are well varied and offer up a lot of fun and challenge and the setting is really cool.

You don't want to be clock watching, while trying to enjoy what's there, and depending on light/cloud cover and slow play, that could happen.

Just found out ( since I don't pay attention to the package as a local ) that you could package your stay with golf. Some local 4 star hotel teamed up with golf course to offer stay and golf package. Most deal requires double occupancy, but I'm sure you could call and find out if they offer golfer with non golfing partner deal. I know Home Course offer the package. other golf courses like Chambers Bay, Sun Mountain all in the area offer stay and golf package.

Other area, like the Wine Valley, Suncadia, and East to the border of Idaho with Coeur d' Lene all have packages. You'll need to either call or email them to find out the latest offering.

June should be fun, we're coming out of the dripping season. Next week forecasting in the high 60's and dry......

We actually have a forecast for near 80° F next week.

What a strange weather, in the month of April jumping from stormy days in the 40's and 50's ( snow in the foothills ) to near 80 within weeks of time. Very unusual indeed.

I might even have to break out the polo shirt and Bahama shorts for the golf course.

It got to 65* here yesterday, but back to reality today and the rest of this week....

After the mid week warming trend, will be back down to high 50's and wet over the weekend.

Traffics was horrible through downtown as they were doing the maintenance work on the I-5.

Make sure you check WSDOT site for roar work before you plan your trip around the Puget Sound to avoid jams.

So my wife and I have finally finalized our travel to Seattle and Portland areas. We're flying in June 13 from Dallas, and landing mid morning Portland. We're going to drive from Portland to stay in Tacoma and be there until after lunch on the 15th, and then back to Portland for the remainder of our trip. We're flying back to Dallas on the 18th in the afternoon. Golf is going to depend on which day has the best weather, so I'll be keeping an eye on that as we get closer.

Have fun, June here typically has nice weather. Drive carefully, our traffic is not quite as bad as DFW area but close with all the population boom and roadway construction. Be patent and don't totally depending on the GPS guidance, use your head and your eyes and plan ahead. Be extra careful since we had a rash of DUI incidents since the legalization of the recreation use of Cannabis.

I'll be in California visiting my kid.

On top of the local rate, if you check with Costco, the $200 Chambers Bay gift card is at a discounted $169.99 ( or $159.99) not sure of the rate but I saw it at the Issaquah warehouse yesterday. Good for green fees , pro shop gifts, and dinning.

Their grill House has very good menu ( at least a couple of years ago ). And local Micro brew or local Yakima Valley wine are yummy.

For drinks after the round, check your receipt, when, I played last year, your 1st drink price was your score, as long as your table orders some food - an order of fries works.
