Hitting a heavier ball?

It appears that I missed an inside joke, but I keep hearing the guys on 'Live From The Masters' refer to players hitting a "heavier ball" and then laughing. What are they talking about?

It’s a bit like when they say it makes a different sound when certain players hit the ball. I guess you need to see it in person to fully understand it.

I believe they're alluding to the different sound some better ball strikers have when compressing the ball. Essentially the normal shot feeling vs the beautiful murdered feeling and sound when you pull hook it.

Some players are such strong ball strikers that the ball makes a different sound when they hit it. I heard it myself when I watched Tiger play for the first time in '96. Hal Sutton was noted for doing the same thing. The "heavier ball" comment is alluding to this sound.

Really good players will say things that relate to “feels” not reality.

 

Another good one is is “keeping the ball on the face a bit longer”. I actually think that is a Bobby Jones quote I read.

 

Johnny Miller likes to call it a heavy hit. Always says Jack had a heavy hit when hitting out of the rough.

 

Putting a heavy ball is really just dying the ball on the lip for example.

 

Pro golfers ain’t rocket scientists but they are good at describing what they feel.

Ha... Gotcha. I know well that the sound/feel of a well-struck blade sounds 'heavier' than other clubs or with less speed. I just didn't know if I missed an inside joke somewhere along the way. Thanks for the input, guys!

 

And it probably has something to do with the German lead tape being added to the ball's core. That's it.

I think its a baseball analogy that has been brought over to golf signifying how a ball sounds at impact which is an intangible thing.

 

I played D1 baseball, as an example you could have 2 pitchers who both throw exactly 90mph, but when you catch the balls one of them is normal and makes a normal sound and the other one literally makes the glove pop and makes a completely different sound even though they are the same speed, we call that throwing a heavy ball.
