Questing for knowledgeable club builder regarding OEM swingweight

If an OEM sends me clubs with swing-weight off by two points light. When I send them back, how do they fix the swing-weight? And how does that influence the performance of the club versus a club manufactured with correct swing-weight in the first place?

 

In other words, if the heads are light to begin with, how do you add weight so that the mass of the head is properly proportioned based upon the original concept of the design of the club?

This is a very good question and to be honest its one I struggle to help answer.

 

Swing weight and tolerances from an OEM are across the board quite good. Yes we see bad sets once and a while but in general they are good. When it comes to swing weight I;m not a huge believer in how much it really matters especially when considering components and that certain specs make it almost impossible to hit the requested swing weight. I mean consistency is VERY VERY important dont get me wrong but to be within one or two requested swing weight is pretty good.

 

The other issue is are you measuring on the same device the OEM used and is it calibrated properly. I have a manual scale that i have had for years and i finally calibrated it this year only to find out later it was off by about a point ( heavy ) to 2 other VERY expensive digital machines. As an experienced club builder BUT also a realist and low single digit handicap i know that this small factor had no significance to my golf game at ALL.

 

What the OEM will do is probably built you a new set and either liquidate your order to a third party of hold onto them for a potential order in the future -i dont work for an OEM so i cant speak for them. all in all Swing weight is way over rated

There is no other way, but to pull them apart and add or subtract tip weights.

 

Now you might say it’s off by 2 SW pts., but they may not be able to get any closer. Variables that effect SW are: shaft weight, shaft balance point, grip wt, club length and std head weight. Depending on what was ordered and combination of components, your desired head weight might not be obtainable. Also, as tobybear said, your scale or the one you used might be inaccurate so you might not have an issue at all.

I posted a swing weight tolerance specification sheet that was included in a Mizuno factory tour, some time ago ( http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1278374-custom-order/#entry12888898 ) you will see a 2 swing weight point is within tolerance so I am very surprised your OEM are willing to change / repare your ser based on this issue. In my experience Mizuno for example will hit a specific swing weight if it falls within their target swing weight range for the shaft head combination.

 

Ping and perhaps PXG have more room for manoeuvre because they have the means to add weight directly to the head using the CTP and weight screws respectively.

Many OEM's call for plus or minus one swingweight point. This means there can be a two swingwieght difference and still be in spec. As an example:

5 iron D2

6 iron D3

7 iron D4

are within spec.

I have to say the variation noted above, is rare in my experience these days, they have everything in place to make the swing weight consistent throughout the set. They simply seem to favour the light end of the spectrum when light or butt weighted shafts are used in the build.

 

How important swing weight is, will always be player and perhaps build specific.
