Northern Bear is in good shape, they haven't had water issues in years. It is good to go, and yes probably the best public course in the area. Coal Creek is awesome I agree there. I sort of guessed that would be a bit far away from Edmonton. But for sure, if you want a little road trip, it is very good. If you don't mind a little road trip go play Barrhead. Could sort of be on the way back to GP, and its one of the best courses in the Province bar none.

+1 on Barrhead....not long, small greens, old style course. Really a super course especially when you consider the green fee!
Normally in good shape as well. It won't "wow" you like Coal Creek, but you'll certainly enjoy your round.

Wanting to do a little tour of Alberta this summer, from Grande Prairie. Looking at doing 8-10 rounds. Ive done BC many times, time to do some in my own province.

Which courses should I stick on my list? Prefer to stay away from center Edm/Cgy.

Here is what i have so far.

Jasper - never have done
Banff - never have done
Wolf Creek - Been a lot of years
Northern Bear - always decent
Trestle Creek - may go check out
D'Arcy Ranch
Dinosour Trail
Sundre
Innisfail

Which others?
Barrhead is Great. Where do you play in Grande Prairie? Just moved up here last year and bought a membership at the Country club but didn't play a lot. Hoping to get out more this year.

Jasper is great, Banff is nice as well but both are spendy.

I like Stewart Creek in Canmore, just a solid golf course.
The links at Gleneagles is also a fun track to play.

I'd pass on Dinosaur trail....front nine is a bowling ally, and the back nine is just WTF where do I hit the ball? Other than some nice elevated par 3s...you'll be scratching you head thinking who the hell put this dogs breakfast together?

Innisfail is superb. As mentioned above, you gotta hit Coal Creek if you are doing the tour, seriously a great and memorable track.

I play either at gpgcc or Dunes. I have my membership at home course in Woking. Chinook Valley, cheap, never busy and always in good shape. Good nine hole track.

Just wanted to report that the greens at Red Tail Landing here in Edmonton are back. Last year was atrocious, no grass anywhere. The guys worked hard and they are really good again. We played in the men's league last night and it was great. If you have enjoyed this course in the past, you can feel good about coming to play it again. Course was in really good shape actually.

Red Tail? it is pretty good. It can play pretty long (7,400 from the tips, 6,800 from the blues, which I usually play), and it gets windy as there are no trees or buildings anywhere around. Its a good links style course with fescue mounds up and down most holes. There is a good mix, some water hazards, lots of fairway bunkering. I quite like it as I have a membership there. They held the Alberta Open there a couple of years ago and it went well. Its got some length so those guys didn't tear it up too bad. Par 3's are tough. I would probably wait another couple of weeks if possible. The greens are all in good shape, they just haven't quite starting to shave them down yet. But at least there is grass, which is more than we could say last year!

Red tail is great. Doesn't seem to play its full length (even from the back), as a number of holes aren't driver holes anyway so just "laying up" with a longer club, or added length on par 5s just makes them true 3 shot par 5s, which for the most part are 3 shots anyway given the huge penalty for missing if going for them in 2. (2 and 11)

Good strong par 3s.
Lots of wind, but very generous fairways if you play the course as intended (e.g. You don't try to over power it).

Fun course, I always seem to score well thee so that helps!

Played mens night tonight at Heritage Pointe for the first time in a while. Greens are firm and fast right now, played firmer even today due to the rain. I know that doesn't really make sense but they were firm underneath and then the moisture on top made the ball skip instead of grab. Hit it about as good as I have all year and shot 35 on desert in the rain and wind.
nice play well, they're all very very good right now with the exception of heritage 1. I think they're trying to plug out the dead poa in the back left of the green so its a mess. Hopefully they will keep the pin on the right hand portion as that side is fine.

I don't know why more courses don't have power shoe brushes at the first tee and make people use them.

D'Arcy has had pretty good success keeping poa away with theirs.
Speaking of D'Arcy are they redoing some greens this year? I thought I heard that somewhere.

I know Priddis is ripping out most if not all the greens on hawk and redoing them with bent I believe. Also going to move the green left more on #2.

The CC is/was redoing the fairway on number 10, I think they were doing one other thing as well, forget what.

I played at D'Arcy this past weekend (May 30th). I overheard some people chatting about greens, specifically the back 9. I didn't notice any work being done though. All the greens were in great shape to my amateur eye. Maybe it's coming later in the season?
