One Round near DC before business meetings

I'll have time to get in only one round on this trip. Which of the following would you suggest I play and why? Don't base your choice on price. Base it on the course design. Thanks

Potomac Shores

Laurel Hill

Westfields

Augustine

I like Westfields and Augustine, and I've heard lots of folks say that Laurel Hill is really good. Some friends played Potomac Shores, and weren't really impressed.

Augustine is a bit of a hike from DC. It’s nice, but was a bit rough around the edges last year. ( not important parts of the course, just washed out areas along cart paths, etc. Old owners let the conditioning go a bit, and new ones were getting it back in shape early last year). I wouldn’t drive extra to play it. But, if you’re staying close by, I wouldn’t drive past it to get to the others either.

 

The others are all nice. Different people will say one or the other is their favorite in the area. If you’ve played none, go with the one easiest to get to.

 

Area Courses are aerating this time of year. You might want to consider that too. Westfields aerated a few weeks ago. You can still see the marks, but it isn’t effecting roll at this point. Another warm week and you probably won’t be able to see them.

Potomac Shores and Worthington are the best conditioned of the bunch. They both have some design quirks that people tend to either love or hate. I personally don’t love Worthington. There are a tremendous number of tee shots that land where you can’t see the ball. If you’re a yard off the fairway, the rough is so thick you spend 5 minutes trying to find it. Others swear it’s the best public course in DC Metro area

 

Potomac Shores is hard but short. You hit less than driver on a lot of holes. I like it a lot, but can see where others would get tired of teeing of with irons and fairfay woods.

 

Laurel Hill is nice if it’s not crowded. It can get busier than the others in my experience. It’s also got little shade if you’re playing on a hot day.

 

I’ve never played Whisky Creek. Can’t compare that to the others, but I’ve heard good things.

depending on the time of day westfields and laurel hill will be pretty crowded. like others have said augustine can be a hike depending where you're located. I would recommend potomac shores or laurel hill.

Wherever you play, ask about the conditions of the greens. Brutal winter to recover from early season aeration.

 

Just went out to Hwiskey Creek for 36 this past Wednesday with 31 other WRXers. Service was impeccable. The greens were almost all the way back. Conditions otherwise were very good. Highly recommend.

 

Played Potomac Shores today in a tournament. Jack Nicklaus signature design. Bring a high fade if you have one. Greens were excellent, as they did not punch. Conditions otherwise were ok- lots of divots, and they weren’t handing out divot mix. Come to find out they are replacing the grasses in the fairways and re-doing the bunkers this summer and are closing for 2 months minimum.

 

Worthington Manor is a local favorite. Can get incredibly challenging. The USGA holds qualifiers there all the time. Conditions are usually very good. I haven’t played there this year, yet. The course has a wonderful flow to it.

 

If it were for just one round, from a design perspective, I’d likely pick WC or Worthington, and strongly consider Laurel Hill.

Worthington Manor in MD, or Laurel Hills in VA. By far the two best of the bunch.
