Old 5 iron versus new 7 iron

I don't have a real problem with the concept of stronger lofts, as long as they maintain good gapping and don't mess up the wedges. So in the above example, if the strong 7 goes the same distance as but with more height than the old 5 iron, I'm good with that in isolation. Then what about the spin? Does it at least spin the same as the old 5 iron?

In a quick glance of both clubs, it appeared the 7 iron also spun more.

So higher launch with more spin, similar distance.

Agree with you, not seeing the problem here.

And this comparison was done with the strongest lofted stock 7 iron from a mainstream manufacturer. The height and spin differences would be a lot higher comparing the mizuno to something like the Ping G700 or even the Rogue.

so how many wedges does it take from the "pw" to sand wedge ? id guess 3 ?

Use me as an example. Strong-lofted irons of some sort (either G700 or Epon AF705...still deciding but the 700s are a bit more forgiving hence the sig), off a 44* PW. I used the same loft last year with Mizuno 900 Forged. I went 44* PW, 49* GW, 55* Sand, 60* LW. This year I'm going 44*, 49*, 54*, 58*. Wedges have always been the weakest part of my game on full shots, I don't seem to get much out of them. Bunker play and chipping and such is usually average to the stronger side. I figured going something a little bit more forgiving with a thinner face and a touch stronger loft will help get the distance back.

For reference, last year I was going 130y on the fly with my PW, and I had to RIP at my 49* Miura GW to get it to fly 100y. During my testing, I found the Ping 54*, on easy swings, was flying 105. I figure the 49* Ping wedge should easily be the 115 club now that I never had before.

5* gaps across the set. So... 2. See my sig.

Then again, my clubs are all same length and shaft, so not really many variables to consider.

I agree if you played like a 42 or 43* PW and wanted to get down to 60* for your highest loft, it could get hairy. But unless you're dead set on playing wedges from a set, you can just get wedges without "SW" or "G" stamped on them.

When I carried Mizuno T-5s, I had a 50, 54, and 58. I didn't call them gap, sand and lob. I just called them my "50," "54," and "58." Who gives a f***?

Meh...been beaten to death. Stamp a PW on a 30* iron for all I care. If it works it works. Does anyone honestly care how far anyone else is hitting their clubs? I've never asked anyone what club they hit in recent memory.

The guys complaining about strong lofts care about something else. They were hoping to impress others and look like a player with their players' clubs, and it completely backfired, because no one is impressed by a guy hitting a shiny but low flying 5 iron when they're hitting 6 or 7 themselves.

Mind you, I am NOT saying that everyone who buys these is a poser. Most buy just them because they like the clubs, but you never hear them complaining about the strong lofts of other peoples clubs.

Lol. Well obviously we all do !!! Or else we wouldn’t be posting on this meaningless topic.

Side bar. How’s the single length going ? I’ve been very curious of those for some time. Being tall I play my wedges pw-Lw all same length and they are 36.5. Which is aboot an inch over standard. I’ll never swap back on that end. I bet I could fall right into a 37 inch iron set 4-9. If I ever went all techy tech tech that’s what I think is the way. Funny how a lot thof forgiveness cops turn their noses up at the idea.

Boss you got that Basakwards....

It’s the guy hitting that 7 that’s crowing about what club he hit. You’ve never heard a guy with a weak lofted iron blowing on about how far a 7 iron went. Lol.

Honestly, it's my opinion that having irons (I count wedges as irons, for better or worse) is way less techy. Once you figure out the right shaft and length, boom. Copy 7 or 8 times with a different loft on each club and you're done. No thought. No picking a different wedge shaft, no worrying about swing weights, etc.

I've had mixed results, honestly. But I think it's because the weather has been bad here and I haven't had consistent ground conditions. I got my set in February, got 2 great rounds in Florida, then came back to Ohio. Chunked a LOT of wedges on the soft ground. It's getting better and my last 3-4 rounds I have felt I can't miss a green between 100 and 140. That's SW, GW, PW territory, and the clubs are so similar, it's literally the same swing. I have had a tendency to pull wedges in that range. No more.

Moving up the bag, I struggled with the 6 which is really bent like a 5. It's just me being sloppy though. At 36.5", I need to make sure to close my face. I leak the 6 and 7 right unless I make sure to have proper shaft lean and don't fight my normal pull swing path with my irons. I was concerned about height at first with the 6, but I've hit some shots off the turf that have gone plenty high. Shorter for sure, but high. Part of it could be my SS just being down from not playing consistently.

What's funny is when I went to hit my hybrid this spring, it was like I had a stroke. I couldn't make solid contact. I was trying to hit it like an iron, but at 40.5", it felt foreign all of a sudden. Going from 36.5" club in hand to 40.5" club and making the same swing was just so awkward.

So I did what I always wanted anyway, which was to build SL woods at 41.5." Now I can tell myself "you're hitting a wood," and make my "wood" swing, even if it isn't all that much different from my "iron" swing. The 7W essentially acts like a 4h replacement, and the 5W acts like a 2h. The 3 wood actually flights like a 4/5W. I love it because I thin my woods a lot and these have such a low/deep COG that they still "get up."

Perhaps the coolest part of SL to me, though, is standing upright to hit bump and runs. I set up like a normal GW shot and just take a mini full swing. Less tendency to lean the shaft forward too much or chili dip. Also cool is hitting a high flop with the 60*. You literally don't have to change your posture. Just take a half-ish swing and thump that b**** down on the turf. The few times I've been in the sand I've used the 60 with that technique and I got out just fine. And I suck from the sand.

Sorry for the book. I'm bored on lunch break.
