Sending a Circle T to the Scotty Custom Shop

NYCGolfNut

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a Circle T (Newport 2 mid-slant), and would like to change the color scheme and potentially refinish. The customization tools on the Scotty site do not have the option to design a Circle T. Needs to be at Scotty, because I'd like an updated COA to preserve long-term value.

Am sure lots of folks on here have seen this issue before, and there is a well trodden path. Given the higher value of Circle T putters, one would think that there should be greater control, customization and predictability to the process than there seems to be now.

Appreciate any advise or pointers or wisdom from the group.

Here's the response I got when I asked about sending in a CT putter.

"Thank you for the email and your support of the Scotty Cameron brand. We do service several Tour models each year, and in the Custom Shop we do have circle T grips and weights we can install for you. We offer either a red or black circle T Pistolini or Pistolero. The price for these grips are $150. We have circle T weights from 5 to 30 grams. Weights from 5-20 grams are $125 for the pair, the 25 & 30 gram tungsten circle T weights are $165 for the pair.

We would advise you use our classic form to submit the order for a Tour putter, as you will not see any tour items listed. In the notes section please mention what items you would like to purchase and that you are aware of the up-charge for these products. We will have to manually charge you for these items when we receive your putter into the Custom Shop. We hope this information is helpful and if you have any other questions, please feel free to call our customer service team at 1-760-591-9720. "

What I did even with a stock Newport 2 because I wanted colours in a certain pattern was I had a template that I made up and designed it the way I wanted it to look. I included 3 different views of the putter and included stamps that I wanted including the colour that I wanted them in. I then printed it off and wrapped it around the head so that I knew the tech would get it. On the order form a created something similar to what I wanted and in the notes just put that I had included a drawing of what I wanted. Got the putter back exactly how I wanted it. I wouldn't do anything else from now on.

Great idea! I think I will do this too.

Very helpful. Thank you!

Wowzers. You’ve got to be impressed with a brand strong enough to get $150 for a grip. Apple is tanking right now because they’re struggling to sell a phone for around 10% more than the competition, and Cameron is able to throw his brand on something and get 1000% more. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. I’m impressed. That’s pure business wizardry.

I read a list somewhere of long standing businesses that millennial's are killing. (No offense to millennial's, i admire your cutting through the BS). Golf was on that list-gotta think Cameron is on top of that list. I don't see this continuing. Could be wrong who knows? He should be studied in business school. Absolute business genius. Putter maker not so much IMHO. Sorry for going down that road again. Scotty lives in Rancho Sante Fe, has a membership to the bridges, etc.. living large. Good on him. There's getting paid for your product then there are $150.00 grips. Too much really good competition now.

They are protecting the brand. I don’t see an issue. If you don’t like the price try a different brand.

I had my newport refinished. Took about 16 weeks but that was during the winter time when they get hammered.

Apologies to resurrect an old thread, but new here and found this one through search.

I have a Circle T Timeless Carbon that I’d like to have cleaned up to make the putter like new. I’d also like to get new shaft bands and a Tour Only grip.

As it relates to “clean-up”/refinish of the putter itself, I don’t want to change the weight of the putter, including through re-mill. The putter is 350g. Is it possible for the Scotty Custom Shop to simply light touch the sole and other areas of the putter to make like new without full on restoration and weight change?

Without a restoration you can get the grip, and the shaft band. This is by paying for a new grip and shaft (band). But the "light touch up" you want will require paying for a restoration. If there are no visible dings on the putter head the restoration process will not remove more than 2 or 3 grams of weight. If there are dings the restoration/refinish will remove 6 to 12 grams of head weight.

Like the poster above stated... call them and see the options... just an FYI, a Circle T grip will run you significantly more than a standard grip

Helpful tip. I called the Custom Shop today. They noted that restoration is all or nothing. In other words, the Custom Shop will do the end-to-end restoration or they will not do it at all. They also confirmed that the restoration would drop putter weight through the re-milling and re-finishing process. They mentioned that they could produce a new COA to indicate the new weight, but mine has “350g” stamped on the sole, so I would rather not change the weight.

Other tidbits (probably old news to most) … the Custom Shop  can also provide a putter grip (Circle T or otherwise), and complimentary shaft bands - Circle T. They do not sell CT head covers. You will need to get that from the gallery.

With all that said, my putter is in pretty darn good shape. I just have some spotting on the sole (Black Carbon Steel). Wondering if the Scotty Cameron Cleaning Cloths might get those out while also preserving / protecting the finish? Anyone know the best way to clear spots without degrading finish on a Black Carbon Steel putter?

If the only flaw to the putter is some sole marks/spotting I suggest forgetting about it. Collectors do not mind spotting on the sole and same does not lower the putter's value. Any restoration would definitely lower the  price value of the putter. Also, an older COA is better than a new one.

To take the best possible care of your carbon head black oxide finish putter never, ever put it inside a damp/wet/moisture-filled cover. If you are playing when the greens are wet dry the head thoroughly before putting it back in the cover.  If the greens have been recently sprayed with chemical fertilizer and, or, top dressed with sand, do not use the putter that day. Also, onto the putter head once a month spray some CNC brand food grade silicone.

I bought a Button Back a few years ago and someone scratched up the sole pretty bad trying to get the weights out.  They said the tool kept slipping and gouged up the sole.  The rest of the putter looked brand new so I really didn't want to get it refinished.  I called the shop and was given a price for just doing the sole (I think it was 85.00).  I sent it in and it came out great.
Maybe they don't offer that anymore.

As for sending in a Circle T putter, the best thing to do is call them, let them know what you want done, and they will walk you through it.

Thanks for the great advice throughout this thread! I ultimately will send the putter in for restoration back to original/like new condition. I think your assessment of a few grams weight-loss, at most, given good condition of the putter helped sway me.

I want the putter to be as new condition as possible, and it wouldn’t be something that I game. It’s also something I am not trying to sell, so not too fussed about any loss in value - though I do have the original COA and will get a new one also.

I’ll be sure to update on my experience over time.

Yah let us know

They've never put a new and different headweight on a COA after refinish (or I haven't heard anyone who had that happen), so it would definitely be a new thing if they actually did that.  Even though they said they would, I guess I would be surprised if that happened.
