Sending a Circle T to the Scotty Custom Shop

Yah let us know

They've never put a new and different headweight on a COA after refinish (or I haven't heard anyone who had that happen), so it would definitely be a new thing if they actually did that.  Even though they said they would, I guess I would be surprised if that happened.

Apologies, should have been more clear. The Custom Shop simply said they could issue a new COA alongside the restored putter, but they could not assure a specific putter head weight.

For more context, the ^ was in response to my asking whether they could restore and finish to a 340g had weight + changing the sole stamping from 350G to 340G. (clearly, as new to the process, I was quite aspirational).

I would have rated my putter as a 9.5/10, but still didn’t feel like my own. Given the good condition, I suspect very minimal / de minimis weight loss in the putter head where it’s defensible still around 350G.

I also asked to keep everything original or back to original, including paint fill. Used the Notes section of the Classic Form (they said I could use either the Tour or Timeless JAT version) to request, for an up charge to credit card on file, a Tour Shaft, Tour Shaft-band sticker and upgraded Tour grip (from standard Pistolini Red).

Super helpful folks over there and left me very comfortable with both the process and expected outcome. Expensive, but in my view, something I was and am happy to do for this one.

Yah that’s what has been the norm as regards to head weight and coa. Thanks for clarifying.

just another heads up. There really isn’t such a thing as a tour shaft. There’s the tour shaft band but all the shaft are otherwise the same tour or OTR.  There’s a smoked shaft but the putter has to have one in it already for the CS to put in a new one of those.

Ah, very good to know. Mine was not the smoked shaft.

My putter originally came with two (2) “Tour” shaft bands. A larger black rectangular one, and then a small, Orange CT shaft band closer to the grip. The Custom Shop said they could accommodate adding a Tour shaft band. Do you know if they’ll put both on the new shaft, or just one or the other. If so, which one I’m wondering.

They should put both on them if it comes in that way.  They've really tried to go to a model, I think to discourage random flipping, of limiting things such as smoked shafts, the cameron fuji graphite shaft, and things of that nature, unless it comes in to the shop with these things already "on" the putter.  Two CT bands isn't such a big deal, so I would guess they'd just replace them esp as you say it already comes with them.

I know it's your putter, and everyone has their own feelings on it, but are you sure you want the total resto?  Just to play devils advocate, in general, I think many people would much prefer to have a 350 gm putter in original condition, esp as it is in 9-9.5/10 shape I think you said earlier.  I can't remember what exact putter you said you have, but in restoring it to remove some of the imperfections it has on the sole, you're going to likely lose any original mill marks it has on it (cavity, shoulders, neck, certainly the face) which would a shame.  It does sound like you do want it lighter, which it certainly will be too.  Most people have it drilled into their head that they want 350 though, so even though you don't think you will, when you do sell it (like we all do in this hobby lol, me definitely included in that) it will likely garner less attention as it will have lost some of that weight.  The loss on resto generally is less for putters in better shape coming in, but ya never know.  In any case, everyone has their own preference as to restoration, just figured I'd present the other side.  The last point I'd make is with the current resto prices, honestly sometimes if you're that bothered by whatever the issue is on the current putter, it makes more sense to sell that putter and buy another Cameron that is in the condition you like.  The CS resto prices really have gone up over the years.

Anyways, best of luck to ya, and keep us updated with photos when it comes back. I don't think you've already shared pix of current condition, would love to see those too.

Hear you on the other side. However, I honestly don’t ever plan to sell. I have another Timeless bought new that I’ll leave as-is and perhaps trade out of in the future. As you might be able to tell, I love the Carbon Steel Black Oxide/Brushed Polished look and the Newport 2 head shape. With the Tiger-like markings, this one just suits my eye. So, trusting the Custom Shop and my own desire to make it my own and not for gaming, I’m comfortable with the restoration route. Hopefully, minimal loss in weight - e.g., < 3 grams

Haha. Thanks. I know many will think I am crazy. But, hopefully, given how good of shape it is in, the restoration will be light relative to others.

LOl yah, I think you're crazy to resto that🤣

But we all got things that we wanna do that are kinda crazy in this game, so no judgement for sure man

Good luck with it man, share it when it comes back

Did they give you an estimated turn around?  Before they shut it down, they were waaaay backed up.

Good News: No re-milling necessary. As part of restoration, the Custom Shop will not be removing any metal. Just reapplying the carbon coating and paint fill to original. Super happy upon hearing this, as it is effectively going to be a brand new putter without weight loss. Will follow-up with pics once putter is received from CS in the next several weeks.

sounds like you talked to the right person

hope they follow thru with that request.  should be epic then when you get it back

Can anyone confirm if the circle T pistolini plus is available for circle T resto? Or can I opt out for the resto for a new grip? Wanted to send in for coa and wanted to grab a grip while it's there

You don’t have to get a restoration for a new grip. Circle T grips used to be $150. They might be more now since the Custom Shop has raised the prices on everything else.

The biggest question is if your circle t is pretty used but not abused, do you send it in or not? How bad dose the value drop vs keeping it original. This is my issue. few dings and marks but the club has amazing CNC marks all over the club. Hate for that to go away and then taking down the mushrooming from the handstamps.

Doing some research about sending in a older circle t and came across this thread.

I don’t think a light restoration without losing more than a few grams would lose value at all. In fact, I think changing paint fill on some of the older circle t putters would increase value instantly. Anything Tiffany blue paint fill on tour black would add $1000-1500 off the bat. Most people buying these are not on golfwrx and from my experience, certain color schemes command way higher prices than others and I have no idea why. Also, any work done by official custom shop carries so much weight that a clean restoration with COA equals way more value than original that is used and doesn’t look as attractive (color scheme). COA also doesn’t mention any note about restoration so no worries there. Thinking about sending an old Laguna ️ T in to re apply tour black finish with Tiffany blue and white paint fill but may use it a bit more before I do.

I'm not as concerned as much about losing value as I am losing the milling and raised areas around the stampings. This is what makes it for me. I paid less than half of what they normally sell for, so I just plan to keep it as is. 20211017_112207.jpg.57b465558d0e5954e0ab0316c3e70244.jpg

You can prob send it in and ask about it especially if you’re getting a COA anyways.

You think you're going to get an additional 1500.00 just by changing the paint to Tiffany?  LOL
Well, as BYK mentioned, they only do Tiffany on GSS putters.  That's probably why you are used to seeing putters with Tiffany paint sell for more.  It's not the paint, it's the fact that they're GSS.
Also, just because there is no mention of a restoration on a COA does not mean that someone looking to purchase a putter in that price range cannot tell that the putter has been restored.  A collector will always be more attracted to a putter in it's original finish versus one that has been restored.  Plus, when selling a putter at this price point, you should always be open and honest about the putters condition and whether it has been refinished or not.
Some people gravitate towards Tiffany Blue, there is no question about that.  You could always learn to do the paintfill yourself.  Then you can paint your putters however you want.

You’re totally right, my mistake. I’m an idiot. I do think certain color schemes do command higher value on the same putter models (esp circle t’s) but not knowing gss Tiffany blue was dumb

Nah, not dumb.  I didn't mean to be hard on you.  To me, your comment came across as someone looking to flip / make a quick buck on putters just by changing the paint color, almost as if you were trying to fool someone into paying more.  I may have interpreted that wrong though, and if so, I apologize.
But Tiffany is popular on just about ANY putter.  The only problem is, the Custom Shop won't do it for you unless it's GSS.  It may even have to have had Tiffany paint originally, but I'm not 100% on that.  They may do it on any GSS putter if requested.
A lot of people do their won paintfill though.  It's really not that hard.

Yes - Just had it added to a TTT Special Select. I added to the notes and confirmed by phone.
