Pacific dunes yardage

What is the true yardage of PD? The scorecard says the green tee is 6100 yards. I normally play 6700 to 6900 yards. Average drive is 285-290, 8 iron is a 165 club.

 

Is it like Kiawah where wind adds an easy 500 yards, or are the black tees at 6600 definitely playable for the above numbers? My handicap is 8 for reference.

Assuming you are playing it multiple times, start on the greens and go back for round two if it's not long enough for you.

If the wind is not blowing strong enough Pacific from green tees can result in a lot of 9Is and wedges. We had a gentleish day last Nov and except for #4, #7 and a some of the par 3's it was 9I or less into every green.

If the wind is up, teeboxes don't matter too much.

 

Both because we are there in the winter and also because one back from the greens are the 'tips' we rarely see people on anything other than the greens, unless there are ladies in the group.

Agreed. If the winds are really up (25mph+), any of the courses can play a lot longer.

 

Most noticeable for me on Old Mac, but the back nine on PD is just brutal if you're into a South wind.

I agree with Duff and Spud. Even though you have the length to play the blacks, the yardage of PD isn't the problem, it's the precision required. If the winds are down black tees will be a fun challenge, and any wind and the greens will be plenty.

Agree with everyone above. Play it by ear depending on the conditions that day.

 

I hit my 8iron about the same as you and when I was at the resort we had 4-5 club winds all three days. Two of us in our group are relatively long and we played the greens the whole trip.

 

As an example, one hole I remember having ~140 yards to the pin and I hit my 5 iron slightly short of pin high. I fly my 5 iron around +/- 205.

 

We had 11 on Old Mac into the wind and man was that a beast!!

My home course has tees that are just a bit over 6700 yards, and that's enough length for me. On Pacific from the greens I often find myself hitting similar clubs for approach shots as the 6700 yarders at home. As noted above, the wind plays a giant role, and can switch around directions day to day, so one day you'll have a 3 iron and the next day a wedge.

I usually play 6500-6800 yard courses and played the greens at all the bandon courses. Like you also thought about playing the black. Yardage was plenty. Conditions were challenging with wind ranging from moderate to gale force with rain for two days. We had a 3 that didn’t break 80, a 4 that shot 77 on old Mac, a 10 that shot a 79 at bandon one day. I shot an 81 at pac and an 82 at bandon. Unless you’re a low single digit who bombs it or the weather is good green is appropriate.
