Thin toe hook, please help!!! Videos included

This started happening a couple weeks ago and is getting worse. Basically the longer the iron the more likely I am to toe hook it.

 

First video is straight on, 5 iron, hit about 200, actually didn't hook but toed it

 

 

This is a 6 iron I chunked, but had the same feeling, go figure when you are trying to figure something out you do something different, but figure something should translate between the videos

 

 

Please help, I normally hit a draw but this toe hook thing has me baffled

As silly as it sounds it all goes back to the grip. From the face on angle your left hand is quite strong which is going to cause your club face to shut way quicker than you’d like. Not too long ago my swing coach and I worked on several different things to stop me from hitting those left hooks and all it took was for me to weaken my grip just a little. Just a thought.. everyone’s game is different but it’s definitely worth a try.

That's my exact miss and same swing fault. Monte identified it a few years ago and I've been really working on it. It takes a lot of self control to reign it in.

and lose flex in trail leg in backswing......... that will free up the hips

by lose flex, you mean to straighten it?

 

so far this issue is only getting worse, thinking about getting professional help!

 

I have noticed with my irons, when I take the club back it looks like I close the club face almost immediately. Will try and get some range time this week and just work on a smooth takeaway keeping everything square. It feels like everything is just out of whack, nothing feels natural right now. Crazy that a few months ago I was shooting mid to high 70s consistently and now I am barely able to break 90.

UPDATE: I seem to have solved the problem, was just my grip as several people mentioned, am continuing to work on hip turn

Didn't see anything in the grip that needed to be changed. It looked stronger due to the camera angle - it's not directly face on but coming from the right (your left).

Hard to tell anything about that grip from that angle.

 

Straigthening the trail knee is a small thing - only about 7-10*.

 

I'd consider improving your extension in the backswing - get that trail shoulder behind your head. Your still bent over when you are at the top of your backswing.

 

 

 

That would go nicely with getting a deeper hip turn - help you stop doing that little arm lift at the end of your backswing - helps with transition too.

How does one turn their hips more? Is it something that needs to be told? Do you think it is beneficial to restrict movement in your lower body on the backswing? Yes? Stop telling yourself to do this. No? Then listening to advice to increase hip turn will not work. Instead, understand that the manner in which you move the club, directional, magnitude and duration, does not create a scenario in which segments of your body are required to move. For example, if your club moves 90 percent vertically and 10 percent inwards on the bs, would you see your lower body “turn”? Probably not. Those that have a clue are asking for you to provide more club depth and as a result, should be addressing how you are moving the club during the bs. Move the handle of the club in a manner where that causes your lower body to react in a manner that “opens up” and has your right hip slightly higher than your left around p4. If you’re moving the club correctly, you shouldn’t have to tell your lower body to do anything (as long as you don’t think being restrictive is a good idea). Hope this helps.
