Good Player vs. Ok Player

In your mind, what specific shot or thought process separates a good player vs. an okay player.

 

In other words, what specific shot makes you think “Man, this guy/girl can play!”

 

IMO, I think a good indicator is the ability to hit a good lob shot or hit a flighted iron shot in the wind

it's all relative.

 

I don't think of things in terms of Good vs. Okay...what does it matter?..I ask..what is your handicap? thats all I need to know. If they don't have one I ask "what is your best score this year?" We then negotiate bets and play golf.

Consistent center strike combined with decent direction control. The center strike pretty much guarantees distance control. Add direction control and you got a playa.

 

Us hackers are all over the club face so distance is a crap shoot. I get a kick out of my buddies watch showing a 5 yard difference to the pin from my cell phone and him thinking that makes one bit of friggin' difference to us.

Edit: or a very repeatable stock shot. Since there are many who choose not to change their shape/trajectory.

True. But I've not come across too many players who are hitting lots of GIR that can't putt.

Yes, he is a great player, but relative to the tour he is just okay....if he could putt he would be top 5.

I think you need to define it more than good vs. ok. To me good is low single digit but to others it might be different. I would say an ok player can hit greens, a good player can control what part of the green they hit.

to me - it comes down to scrambling (including bunker play), FIRs and GIRs. putting is iffy at times for even the best - but hitting 50% fairways or more, or over 50% of greens and getting up and down at least 50% of the time makes you a good golfer in my eyes.

You said 'in your mind', so, let's take a 180 yd. par 3, only instead of a green at the end, there's a barn. An Ok golfer can't hit the broadside of the barn most of the time. A good player can not only hit the broadside of the barn, but pretty much hit it most of the time.

I feel like this is high level player vs good player. I rarely think about what side of the fairway I want to hit, I would maybe on the most position based golf courses. And I would consider myself a pretty good player..

Well after reading the replies I got lost. So I read the OP again.

The Good player---- play my miss so that it can be managed.

 

 

 

The ok player---- Aim for the flag regardless of trouble

Good player ----45 feet radius of target from 150 yards

 

Ok player 70 feet radius of target from 150 yards

 

I dont care how the ball flight looks if its a repeatable distance then it wrx for me.

I'm at a point in my life I appreciate the company I keep on the course as opposed to how skilled a player is. Don't get me wrong, I still love playing with excellent players. As for myself, maybe my best golf, or potential, just may be behind me now. I am still aspiring to get back to scratch and believe this is a realistic possibility. Currently I am an OK player, one with potential and he ability to hit several very good shots in a round. I can putt well and my short game is getting better and better. I used to be a great player then became a good player. I'm working on shaking off the rust from my game. More importantly I am trying to act in a manner that is honerable and exhibits integrity. Honor, integrity, respect, exhibiting graciousness and class is what means more to me thank my skills.

Wouldn't that be subjective to the quality of the course a golfer plays?
