This is why it needs to be defined. To me averaging 2 or more double bogeys a round is a well below average player.

 

Yes, this thread lacks context. What two groups are we talking about here?

 

A 6 handicap versus a +2?

 

A 16 versus an 8?

 

Kind of impossible to narrow anything down until we get that straight. :-)

What was your "15 shots" comment about? What kind of player?

A good player knows their distances and can hit the ball well enough to rely on them. Also, has the imagination and technique to get up and down more times that not.

In your mind, what specific shot or thought process separates a good player vs. an okay player.

 

In other words, what specific shot makes you think “Man, this guy/girl can play!”

 

IMO, I think a good indicator is the ability to hit a good lob shot or hit a flighted iron shot in the wind

To me it comes down to knowing your limitations. Not trying shots even a touring pro would back away from. Not following a poor shot with another poot shot. I’m a low single digit handicapper so a little better than average but not great by any stretch of the imagination. I regularly see players that shoot in the 90’s try things I wouldn’t attempt on my best day. So much of the time these players egos are somehow connected to their golf game. They play from tees too far back for their skill level, they go for shots they couldn’t pull off once in 20 tries, and the list goes on. Choose the right tee box for your skill level, and that doesn’t just mean how far you can hit a driver. Make shot selections that you can pull off more than 50% of the time. Even if it means rolling the ball along the ground. Play to your actual skill level and not to some fantasy you have about your game. That’s how you can graduate to a very decent level of play. Unfortunately the next step is much harder. Not every one has the athleticability to make that step. But most could shot in the low 80’s and that would bring a lot of satisfaction.

To me a good player is one who, when you write down his par at the end of the hole, makes you think "how the heck did that happen?" as you think about the tee shot he double-crossed into the trees.

Not necessarily true, some good players fight a big miss off the tee that can make doubles a frequent occurrence. I have seen and played many rounds around or below par with multiple double bogeys.

I guess that makes Phil Mickelson an OK player. Seeing how he’s usually good for a couple of doubles and or a triple every round but still manages to shot 68

There aren’t any absolutes to this. I have a well publicized ( in my mind ) double bogey per round streak going and I’m still scaring par most times. Although I have had a couple 3 double rounds and shot 82ish. You just have to make birdies to try to cover.

 

Point is the double bogey rule doesn’t work. Some players are aggressive. And some are aggressive and have a cold putter currently and 3 putt a lot. And maybe I’m just “ok”. If so give me some strokes I’ll play for some $ in a 9 hole match and hope the double was meant for the back 9. Loll.

I mentally place a player in a bucket depending on what their swing looks like and their ball flight. That's about it. On the greens, it's not necessarily about holing putts, but good putters you can see every putt looks like it might go in. They get the ball to the hole all the time and it is typically turning towards the hole as it gets there. If they're leaving putts short and/or the ball is turning away from the hole as it gets near, then they get put in the not so good bucket.

The payer who performs most consistently is the better player. We can all hit good shots from time to time. The better player hits good shots more often and his poor shots are more like his good shots than the poor shots of the lesser player. Consistency rules for any level of player.

I occasionally play against a player who has a terrible looking full swing, little distance and ugly ball flight but he always gets it on or near the green. He still makes birdies and he makes very few bogies. Never 3-putts and has every short game shot in the book. His current index is a 4.1 and his low index is 0.8. Dang good player. My full swing and trajectories look like a pro compared to his and I average easily 30+ yards past him off the tee but my index is a 6.7 with a low of 4.3. If I had the short game and putting skills of the first guy I mentioned I'd be scratch or damned close to it. Looking at someone's full swing only gets you so far. At the end of the day its about scoring and getting the ball in the hole and not everyone is conventional in the way they get the ball in the hole in the fewest shots.

 

To me the biggest thing that separates good players from OK players is that truly good players don't follow up a bad shot with another bad shot. Everyone hits bad shots even the tour pros. Its how you follow up the bad shots.

I myself define a “good” golfer as a legit single cap golfer.

 

Not in shats & giggles games though in competitive money and Tourneys.

 

I’ve never ever used the word or classification “ok” golfer, lol

 

A “Player” is a Competitve Plus or a scratch who’s been to Plus competitively however due to family, career and life getting in the way, he/she’s travelled north to scratch, lol.

 

I’ve already mentioned how I judge and dilineate a golfer who “can” from one who “can’t” and the difference between em, lol

Number of mishits.

We're not talking "great" here, so good and ok aren't at the ball shaping level.

So a good player is someone who can make solid contact nearly every shot, even if distance and direction are a normal amount inconsistent.

An ok player is someone who makes good contact most times, but has a few real flubs per round.

The ok player has to keep moving it along to maintain ok status, cannot hold everyone up.

But the good player doesn't need to be great to be just good.

I'm a good player, but I'm not great, however I am better than just ok.

I know these distinctions bc I play a lot of muni golf (more than the avg wrxer who is usually a little choosier), and I see people who are sub-ok golfers every singlen round.

I played w a great golfer the other day on vacation. 9cap, very consistent, similar driver distance, but much better irons distance, lower ballflight, lots of gir.

I kept up w him thru the front 9, and then when I started to get loose, he stayed steady.

But I felt i still played up to good standards bc until the very end i maintained good contact and kept it respectable.

Good is high 80s low 90s. Ok is anywhere around 100.

OP asked for a specific shot, and to me it's an easy answer.

 

Watch them hit a 60* wedge. The good player will flight it down but still with plenty of spin, almost never swings full, and controls distance effectively. The "ok" player almost always swings too hard, hits it WAY too high with less spin, and struggles mightily to control distance.

 

Seen it a hundred times....
