Low caps playing cbx wedges?

Just curious on this, getting tired of barely missing on the toe on chip shots and having a 8 foot putt instead of say 2 or 3.

Not sure if the lightweight shaft is the beat but could custom order something else

It plays pretty much like a standard wedge except for the fact it's really easy to hit. Some have mentioned opening the face up a bunch isn't ideal but I haven't had any issues doing that.

I don’t think a cavity will have much influence on chip shots.

What IS the cavity good for then? I thought it was for forgiveness. I'm a high handicapper and use a muscleback wedge; thinking about the cbx wedges.

I think the shaft does change things. I have the cbx's and had similar results as you.

I recently went with cobra black wedges. Custom ordered them with the same $-taper 120 shafts as my irons. Couldn't be happier.

I don’t think a cavity will have much influence on chip shots.

They do actually,....as long as the COG (sweetspot) of the cavity design is in the center of the face...and not slightly heel side.

Most "traditional" long hosel wedges have a COG (sweetspot) that is on the heel side of center,....making them unforgiving on all shots towards the toe.

The CBX is different in that it has a short hosel like a modern iron set, along with the cavity. The short hosel is a key design aspect in getting the COG (sweetspot) in the exact center of the face

Thats what i was thinking, I exaggerated to make a point but over time having a 6 foor par putt vs a 4 footer makes a difference

I’ve tested CBX, SM7, S18, Ping Glide 2.0 along with my Scor in 50* at thee range and on the course for few days. I really liked the SM7, however, I ended up with CBX. I had some poor mishits from fairway bunkers, but still ended up on the green. I topped the ball from the fairway, it still went the distance and on the green. As for around the green, it is laser like, very forgiving and so easy to chip. Great distance control both on full shots and chipping. Downside, high bounce and club wants to pull left on full shots. Takes a little getting used to. If I had to orde the 50* again, I would order the 52* and have it bent to 50* for lower bounce.

As for the 58*, I went with the versatility of SM7.

I actually like the DG 115 better than the S200 on SM7. I find S200 balloons too much. I ordered DG 115 to install into my SM7.

I play mizuno mp63s but have CBX 50,54,58 wedges. They are super easy to hit. They’ve basically eliminated the fat shot for me. And with chipping, I feel like the wider sole bounces off the turf, whereas, a bladed wedge will stick in the ground on chips a little heavy. I’ve definitely felt the forgiveness in that area. As far as opening the face, out of the rough and bunker, it’s been great. Opening the face on tight lies, you have to make a good pass like having a blade wedge.

My h-cap hovers between 1 and 2 but my wedge play has been bad for a while. I grabbed a couple of these and could not be happier.....I guess you could use the phrase point and shoot, but easy to flight down when i want and the best around the greens that I have used.....That of course is my findings and yours could be different......I guess I should add that i have only played them in soft conditions. I am anxious to see how they perform when the ground gets hard.

Yes, I actually am...I got mine with some pro shop credit and was going to reshaft, but i don't think I will.....I normally like heavy shafts, but these feel good to me.

Forgiveness works in percent, not absolute. If you would have chipped to 2 feet and you hit it on the toe to 8, maybe you'll go to 7.8 feet.

No iron fixes 66%, which is what 4 to 6 would be. It would fix just like an iron, except way less because the speed is less and therefore the loss is less. So if a CB iron can "fix" 10% (which is generous) you'll miss to 7.4 feet (10% of the 6 feet between 8 and 2) instead of 8.

They will have no effect whatsoever on shots that short. As the shot gets longer, it will get more noticeable (fixing 10% of a 100 yard wedge is pretty useful, fixing 10% of a 8 foot chip is irrelevant).

Gripping way down (near the steel) is better fix. Its hard to hit in the toe when the club is 2 1/2 feet long.

Edit - on reread it seems like I’m contradicting Webb, and I’m not. He is correct in how it forgives (just like an iron) and his analysis is very handy on something like 110 from the fairway. But "forgiveness" on a shot of that length is useless UNLESS you are talking about contact miss forgiveness.

Been playing my CBX's for over two months now. I tend to hit towards the toe on short shots. Those clubs are really forgiving at any level. My 58 from the sand works like a charm. I use the stock shaft and one of the great things about it is the club feels heavy (I used Vokeys for a very long time). My wedge game had been my weakness for a long time. I had a hunch with these wedges and I was right about it. I'm a strong CBX advocate. Lots of confidence again after years of sucking at my wedge game. Never get tired of recommending these clubs to all players with a hard time using a wedge.

They are noticeably better for me in all areas. The v sole is amazing. I have had zero issues opening the face for a flop shot from a tight lie.

Slightly related, I went Ping Glide 2.0 ES for very similar reasons on forgiveness and ease to hit. I found my traditional wedges lacked the punch to get me that extra 10 yards if I needed, and swinging harder only resulted in shorter shots due to excess spin while putting it back in the stance helped a bit, it could sometime lead to a thin shot due to not leveling out completely by impact. The forgiveness on the Glide's have helped immensely so far (even though I only received the 54, waiting on the 58 and the SS 50), I'm hitting the 54 as far as my current Miura 50* GW, and hitting out of gnarly rough, sand, tight lies, it doesn't matter, the wedge gets you up and close so easily it's a joke.

I can imagine the CBX is similar. I sold a fair bit of the Hogan and Callaway SureOut's, the Cobra Big Trusty Rusty, and Cleveland Smart Sole's in my days at a big box store because of how easy they were to hit for your guys who struggle with sand or making clean contact. I can imagine the CBX is no different. I think it's a great idea to make the move to help you in the areas you are struggling...no shame in that at all.

I'm a 10 so take this for what is worth.......

I love the CBX in the 50* & 56*. For full swing, typ. bunker shots and simple pitches around the green they are fantastic clubs IMO and very easy to hit. However, I stayed with the 60* PM grind because when you want to hit an open face wedge with a little side spin I thought the CBX 60* was too bulky on the sole and was maybe "too forgiving" to get the same amount of side spin on it. My higher handicap buddy who only ever hits a strait wedge or maybe just an open face to hit the ball a bit higher loves the 60* CBX. For me who likes to get creative with my 60* wedge I didn't care for it at all. This also seems to hold true for most of the people I see playing them out on the course.

I just bought the new SM7 wedges and REALLY dislike them. My miss is towards the toe and the sweet spot on these feels like it’s somewhere near the hosel! There is such a disparity in feel between my JPX 900 Tour PW and the SM7 gap wedge - plus the SM7 feel like sledge hammers. so am seriously thinking about the CBX wedges with their more iron like foregiveness and weight. As long as they do not look too clunky at address I am going to get some

+1, this is me all over - CBX wedges are the sh#t. Try them, they are great wedges.

Opening an old thread. I now have a set of Cleveland CBX irons that go from a 4I through a 50 degree "D" wedge. I hear mention of people buying a 50 degree CBX wedge. Would that be different than the "D" wedge at 50 degrees? Or is it the same club?

I am pondering what wedges I should flesh out this set with. I have the 50 degree "D" and then would go to...........What? A 54 and 58????? A 52 and a 56?????? I have never gotten along with a 60 degree wedge. What would the minions recommend?

For me, 50 and 58 works best. 58 is great out of the bunker, lob shots and 100 yards and in. 50 gives me little more flexibility than 52. I am really enjoying my CBX wedges.

Not a super low cap (9) but I gamed the 56* all last year. Other than out of the sand this club was money for me.

If its any consolation, I have a 4-D in the CBX I cycle into play depending on the course. After 50°, I go to a 56° then a 64°. It's whatever you feel comfortable with really. 54°/58° would most likely be the popular choice. CBX line is a really great line when the ground is mighty damp or first few tee times in the morning :)

The D wedge is slightly different than the 50° CBX. The lie is .5° flatter in the CBX wedge over the D.
