Round Trip drive from NY -DC Glen Mills, Westfields, Bulle Rock

I had a business conference in DC earlier this month and rather than hassle with the drive to LaGuardia, TSA and then getting a car form the airport to the conference, I decided to drive and make a little golf trip out of it. The conference started on Sunday at noon and ended on Tuesday at 1 pm. I played three rounds at some really nice courses. I left my house in the NY burbs Saturday afternoon and drove about 2 hours to the Golf Course at Glen Mills, a Bobby Weed. I arrived a little after 4 pm and had the course to myself. I played in less than 2.5 hours.The Course is on a great piece of land, a good mix of lengths and elevation changes. Only a couple holes I didn't like (#11 and #12 which are very tight). Greens were interesting and undulating. There was alos a lot of wildlife, deer and foxes including a mother and three kits. After the round I finished the drive to DC.

 

The next morning I had an early morning tee time at Westfields (near Dulles airport) and got paired up with three members who were single digit handicaps who hit their shots a lot longer than I do. I really liked the course, but the green fee was twice as high as Glen Mills and the course is not quite of the caliber design wise as Glen Mills (or Bulle Rock, which was my third course).We played in 4 hrs on the dot.

 

After the conference, I stopped at Bulle Rock in Havre de Grace Maryland. It had ten years since I last played there and I didn't remember much about the course and it was before I started taking photos of courses. Number 6 (a par 4 with a steep down hill tee shot and approach over a stream) was the only hole that had stuck in my memory. I arrived after 3 pm and the course was empty. It was also the only warm and sunny day of this trip. As with Glen Mills, I played in less than 2.5 hours. This was also a bargain at the twilight rate.

I play in a league at Westfields, and since I’m not a member anywhere probably consider it my home course. I agree it’s not worth full price, but you can almost always find deals during the week. If you download their app, they send out at least one a week.

I was able to get out to Westfields to play a couple of weeks ago. I had played twice before, but not since 2009ish. The greens were rolling great. I agree it's not worth the full price. I was able to get on for $48 - definitely worth every penny of that.

 

I'm playing Bulle Rock on 6/23. I've never been and always wanted to play it. Thanks for sharing all of your photos!

Westfields is my favorite public course in Northern Virginia, they really embrace the "country club for a day" mindset. I like the design a lot, but I agree it is too pricey. It's somewhere I try to get out to when I can for sure. I'm actually thinking of making the trip to Bulle Rock soon, I was even considering this weekend honestly. Excited to give my thoughts on that one too!
