Range Balls

However, the range ball pictured, how many yards do you think it robbed me of, from a flushed 7i?

 

I hate these things.

Some range balls that are hard as rocks will actually gain you distance! Forget about any control though....

I am with you, can't remember the last time that I had decent range balls to hit. I don't even think the clubs wash them anymore!

Instead of a GolfWRX 210 yard 7 iron, I'm guessing that you only got 209.95 yards.

Some are noticeably worse than others when you strike them well. I'd say 25% or more in reduced yardage from spin and general hardness/quality of ball. When a range gets fresh balls, that's the one I go to the majority of the time. Luckily miles of golf usually has good quality balls most of the year. Shame it is a bit far for me.

With bad range balls, just look at the direction and use then as warmup or swing practice.

 

When your range has a mix of terrible balls and good balls, use the bad balls with short irons to warmup and good balls with

longer clubs.

I cringe hitting range rocks, brings me to reason even when I find a ball I would never put in play I make my own small buckets of balls and use at range. Range balls chew up faces quick. Does anyone think that driver faces are black to make them look worn more quickly, psychologically to push you to replace/buy a driver more quickly?

My favorite is the ball that is well struck, going straight and then it reaches 130 and just falls out of the sky like how a whiffle ball sinks if you throw it correctly.

5 or 10 yards from worn dimples. More if it is a limited flight type ball. On longer clubs more like 10 or 20 or more depending how worn the dimples are.

Some range balls are distance-limited on purpose. You usually see that somewhere with limited space so that drivers don't go through the back.

But most places don't have that.

Most places have the cheapest possible 2 piece ball. That's a rubber core and a durable outer cover that you see.

Those balls are ok when brand new, but will quickly turn into worn down dimpleless freaks. It's like playing a ball for 100 rounds straight or more.

To be clear, you'll see the dimples, but bc of the wear and tear, they will be all kinda smoothed down.

The result of that is a loss of distance. You lose distance bc the lack of dimples means a lack of Bernoulli Effect, and a lack of lift, bc there is not as much of a separation of higher and lower pressure.

There will also be other imperfections on those worn balls, and that will manifest in wacky knuckleballs when you impart certain gear effects.

In general a range ball will go fairly straight, but will lose you 10-15 pct. Most dramatically with the wedges that rely most on carry.

I go through the bucket and pull out all of the smooth balls, they get used for the warm up.
