Poll: Should Phil be DQ'd?

Good grief! He admitted that he did what he did to to gain a significant advantage.

Read the damn rule. That's a DQ plain and simple.

THIS

What's sad is that when I personally watched him do it, then heard his interview, he said he thought it out. I was then like, "OK. He gets DQ'd." He showed intent and knew what he was doing.

No, and there are a lot of people who need to lighten up. In hindsight, it would have been great for him to wait for the ball to finish, take an unplayable, and replay from where he originally hit. He might have saved a stroke or two. However, at the end of the day, he played a stroke on a moving ball, took the 2 stroke penalty (as appropriate), and moved on.

I wish people were this passionate about some of the real issues in society today.

I'm a big Phil fan. But on this one I agree with North Texas and T. That was pretty bad. But for him, a DQ might emphasize his point about the pins (if that was in there) even stronger.

But the real important question......where is Fergie? He has to working on a special post.

He chose the wrong day to not be on here.he probably fainted watching it on TV. I disagree with what Phil did greatly but precedent has been set. Daly wasnt DQed in 99 cant DQ Phil here. The rules are clear. he was out of the tourney almost dead last and threw a tantrum. lets not pretend this will set off a worldwide trend of players doing this. They rarely DQ unless its egregious and affects the outcome or field. I think they punished him by forcing him to play tomorrow!!

Hes a proud guy and this will be a funny story for him one day.He knows hes wrong but hes also 48 and probably figured eff it. You could see how much pressure he felt this week though, he knows time is running out on his dream. had a blueprint of what to do off the tee and executed it but his short game and putter killed him. Justin Rose today played the first 9-10 holes like vintage phil. hit 1 green and was only 1 over. if phil played like that on thursday hed be better off

He should withdraw. The rules as written don't really account for exactly what happened. He should reflect on the incident and realize the withdrawing id the way to go.

Mike Davis said Phil asked if he should wd, but I suspect the convo went more like this, “We’re not going to dq you Phil because our sponsors said ratings are down after Tiger’s mc”.

He nearly made it! Would have been even more classic Phil if it had gone in. I like the strategy and the underlying "you eff'd up another course, USGA" tone of it all.

Good for Phil, only he or perhaps Tiger would have gotten away with that....very Hillary-esque :pimp:

The worst part of the whole thing was having to listen to Joe Buck (probably the dude in his ear) over the next five hours try to dramatize the heck out of the whole thing like thirty times. This thing is so boring to watch and they’re doing all they can to get people tuned in.

Joe Buck is the worst..... for any sport!

The rule says nothing about intent, with regards to the DQ. The committee may DQ the player if they believe his infraction provided either a significant advantage or disadvantage to a fellow competitor. They decided it did not.

"Look, I mean no disrespect by anybody," Mickelson said. "I know it's a two-shot penalty, and at the time I just didn't feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over. I took the two-shot penalty and moved on. It's my understanding of the rules. I've had multiple times where I've wanted to do that. I just finally did."

So this was an honest mistake? Seriously? I have nothing against Phil, but this told me he knew what he was doing.

So this was an honest mistake?

Firstly, he did not admit to doing it in order to gain an advantage. He admitted to doing it because he did not wish to go back and forth.

Secondly, the rules do not mention intent as it relates to a DQ. Here is what the rule says about a possible DQ-

*In the case of a serious breach of Rule 1-2, the Committee may impose a penalty of disqualification.

Note 1: A player is deemed to have committed a serious breach of Rule 1-2 if the Committee considers that the action taken in breach of this Rule has allowed him or another player to gain a significant advantage or has placed another player, other than his partner, at a significant disadvantage.

Whether DQ'€d or not isn'€t my issue. I actually liked him doing that - when I thought he did it impulsively out of frustration. But then understanding that he did it out of a out-of-sync, cynical re-framing of the rules'€ intent. Its disappointing from one of the key leaders of the Tour.

That'€s the real disappointment- Phil has earned respect for his many bold positions. But today, this behavior was small.

I hope he will see this, and recognize contrition. We all make mistakes - owning them is hard. I hope he does this.

You can't read what he said and then seriously say he wasn't trying to gain an advantage. Everyone in the world knows that not having to "not going back and fourth and hitting the same shot over and over" is a definite advantage. We can play semantics all we want, but if it hadn't been advantageous to him, he wouldn't have done it. He may not have said the actual words, but it's world class paraphrasing.

I selected no. All these people on GC and here pissing and moaning about what Phil did, pathetic. The rules as I read them, completely justify what he did. It is interpretation of the rules, and USGA happened to get this right this time. I also have no care about Phil on tour, I really don't have any favorite players, so no bias from me.

Swing hard in case you hit it!

I voted. I don't suppose anybody cares about how I voted.

What I hope everybody does, is to read comments on this, and look at their rule books, and appreciate what a hard ruling it is to make.

Are you actually ok with someone making an intentional stroke at a moving ball or just stating you believe the rule was applied correctly?

Another way of phrasing this... Would you want to play with someone that feels that is an acceptable way to play the game of golf?
