Shorter fairway builds

Thinking of adding a 7 wood with a really heavy shaft, maybe playing just a hair over 41 inches. Can I get away with that or is it too short?

I play a 4 and 5 wood at 42” with an 80’izh g shaft

Was thinking of trying a 7 wood at 40.5 or 41”

I like my hybrid so much the experiment might not be more than a trial

Rather than focus on what the length should be, perhaps think about how you would use the club. The starting assumption here is that your 7W will be used off the deck, mostly to get the ball home or close to the green in par 5s, and perhaps as a second shot in par 4s. Unless the track you play most at is very long, of course. So does that length work for you in those scenarios? Or do you need it to be super long?

I play a 3 Hy (19 deg loft) at 40, and find it to be perfect length. Can play off the deck, the rough, up/down/sideways lies, sometimes even a fairway bunker or two. The slightly shorter length works for me as I don’t need it for distance but rather to further the ball or make up for a poor shot off the tee.

It all depends on where and how you use the club and your confidence in hitting it well off different lies.

That's my current 4w length. Had an XR 16 at 43.25 stock. Just seemed wayyy too long.

That is kind of where I am really coming from. I'm looking for something that is kind of multi-functional in terms of application. I don't need help hitting it high, and I don't have any trouble off the deck. I was thinking more of those "going for it out of the rough" or weird lie scenarios.

Was thinking about picking up an 815 Heavenwood (20 degrees). Loft is close to my 3i, but shorter and heavier might eliminate some of the gap.

Weight is what I am after. Even thinking about trying some steel.

I’ve heard people say that fairways might not be as good as hybrids for getting out of the rough

Well, I'm a little old school with my fairway wood use. Part of that old adage ^ is the fact that today's fairways are built to be toothpicks and the hybrids are shorter and a little heavier, which brings us back to my OP.

well, I've built two 7 woods, both 21*

one is a wishon 950HC with a Matrix 8M2 stiff shaft tipped 2"

the other is a callaway steelhead xr with a Thump fwy shaft F75 stiff tipped 1"

again, thinking 41" as a starting point, and then might even go to 40.5.

neither of them are gripped yet

so they should be heavier builds so maybe better in rough, we'll see

41.00" is not "short" on a 7W, i consider it to be "standard", and its what i play myself (41" -7W/23* with PX TI 5.5 (the blue) its my "Go to club".

Agree with posters saying 41 is not short; whatever gives you consistent strikes is correct. I play driver at 44.5, 3 wood at 42, TMB 2 iron with Tensei Pro White 90 at 40. These lengths give me great contact, regardless of some "standard" of length. I would be more concerned with weight than I would be length.

I've always played 4w at 42" and often times felt I could have gone shorter. 41" for a 7w would probably be pretty sweet and similar to that Cobra Baffler they made for Rickie a couple years ago.

Hardest part IMO is finding a good shaft in the 90-100 weight range.

I play woods the same length and love it. Been playing these length for as long as I can remember. Gives me a lot better consistency. Now with shorter length you need to get a heavier shaft at times to counter the weight. I have a 4 Hybrid that I play at 40 with an 85 gram shaft plus 5 grams of tape.

I'm not sure of the specifics, but I believe if you shorten the club, the lie angle should flatten a bit.

I've played a standard Cobra 5-6w head (both F6 and F7) at 17* on an F6 Baffler shaft (so 41.75" playing length) without making any swing-weight adjustments and it's worked just fine. With the F8 I'm going back to 42.25" (.75" below stock, .75" longer than before) just so the draw setting will be a bit more effective. I saw absolutely no difference when comparing the F7 at 41.75" to the F8 even at 43", so the shaft length adjustment is mostly just for comfort level (the upgrade is just because it's WRX).

Hi Howard.

So, if I like my current 4w build, should I go with a heavier shaft for a 7 wood if I am going down to 41? The 4w is excellent as it is, but I wouldn't want to go lighter.

If that 4W is a good fit, try to find a shaft that is 5 grams plus uncut pr. Inch shorter (equal balance point in the shaft itself), then you "copy feel of shaft wgt", from your 4W to the new 7W.

I built my 7 wood at 40.5" and I put a 95g shaft in it. It turned out perfect.

So much better than a hybrid.

Have never been been so consistently close from 190-210 yards.

I highly recommend this setup for anybody.
