Scratch Wedges/Irons on Tour

Recommended Posts

How are they doing?
I was just wondering how the Scratch Golf clubs are doing on tour? I know their forged wedges are #1 on the Nationwide Tour but how do they compare to the cast vokey's in terms of the amount of people using them?

Also how many people does Scratch have using their iron models?

What about on the PGA/Champions/LPGA/etc.... Tours?

Scratch is a very small company compared to the big boys. They are making head way but, Vokey and Cleveland far exceed their numbers in play. They are/were the #1 forged wedge on the Nationwide Tour. That's marketing spin but, any small victory, is still a major victory against the big boys. On the major Tours, its all about money when it comes to clubs in play. There are a few exceptions but, most players are tied to their Sponsors.

I hit my first set a scratch SB-1's the other day. Finest feeling iron i have ever hit. I hit them side by side with Mizuno MP 67's and MP 32's. The SB-1's were as easy to hit as the 32's and made both of the mizuno's feel like a cast club. I may buy a set at some point, but I am afraid it would negate the reason to ho a new set of irons ever again.

Isn't that the whole point in golf ho'ing? To find a set of clubs that stands out among all the rest? You have found a set that makes Mizuno irons feel like cast clubs. This has got to be a great find and I wouldn't put it past Scratch. I would love to get my hands on a set of Scratch irons myself...

progolf4life,

Everyone's experiences are personal to them. Since you are young, I would suggest you become more aware of your game and your experiences. Then you will be able to differentiate the difference between marketing and real world testing. People flip clubs with their discretionary income, at your stated age, its hard for many to give you credibility.

I take it was just one week that they were #1 on tour?

I wish it was possible to get to see Darrel survey information more easily!

We have been #1 more than 1 week (pretty much every week since the Wichita Tournament). The Darrel Survey actually makes us sign something saying we cannot publish the information or post it anywhere public or I would post the numbers every week.

To be honest with you, I have an unhealthy obsession with golf equipment. I have one set that I have been fitted for and quite honestly, if I stuck with them I would play better golf. Before I became obsessed with golf equipment I played one set for two years straight. My handicap consistently dropped. The past couple of years, I have switched out equipment on almost a weekly basis and my handicap has payed the price. If your goal is to play better golf, get fitted for all of your clubs and stick with them. Learn the full range of distance's with each club. Learn the different types of shots you can hit with each club. Learn how certain clubs react on certain turf conditions and certain lies. It will give you more confidence than $1600 set of irons.

This man knows whats up. I'm 17 and I've finally figured out that you need to have played more golf and been exposed to the market to ho properly. It took me $1400 and I'm not totally done putting together a bag, but just settle on something and play it. Goes for everybody but lets be honest here, I'm still in HS, I have nothing to gain by hoing clubs.

Are the grooves any different on the tour issue wedges. I have a 60* JLM SFU and thought the grooves would be more aggressive when Ari compared them to the Callaway MD grooves. But I do not find them to grab as well, and they look a narrower. They grab pretty well out of the rough, but not as well from the fairway when compared to Callaway. At least in my opinion.

The grind is awesome, though.

All of our 58* and 60* have max depth and width U shaped grooves. The difference between our grooves and other companies max grooves is we round off our edges to reduce chewing up the ball. Most of theirs are sharp and chew up your ball much worse. The 56* and 53* have slightly less wide grooves on them.

I recently switched to Scratch wedges for three reasons... they are forged out of soft metal, they have many grinds available and they have good spin but are not rediculous ball shredders. I've played Spin Milleds and Rac TP Y-Cutters and they just spun too much for my liking. Nothing chaps me more than hitting a wedge 5 feet past the hole and having it spin back 15 feet. I know a lot of it has to do with course conditions, etc., but I found myself throwing away a lot strokes from wedges that spin too much this year.
