I've been hitting them well with some steel fiber hls shafts. Mainly I just found the TS1 5 and 6 to be a bit unforgiving, and the NLUs are less punishing on mishits. (In between I had the maltby tour FDIs.) Other than the added forgiveness I like how they look lol

They do look good. I just went out and hit the nlu on my sim for 25 shots or so and I think with a better shaft it would be completely different. I love the look. I’ll give the ts3 5 iron a fair shake but the nlu will always be in the corner

so with my change to the TS3, I need different wedges. I looked but couldn't find much on the max milled wedges. thoughts? with the ts3 gw being 48*, I'm thinking 54/60 or 52/58.

I'm in a similar position. Currently gaming a set of Rogue ST Pro. But looking to hit the TS1-IM as soon as they come out. And both have a 48* GW.

Historically have played a 52*/56*/60*. But pretty much use the 60* exclusively inside around 100 yards. Basically decided that I don't hit the others enough to warrant 3 wedges. Decided to give a 53* and 58* a shot instead. So I've got 5* gaps from GW through LW. As opposed to 4* gaps with the old setup. Really very little difference and opened up a spot at the top of the bag.

I also recently dropped my 3 wedge M-Series set for the Max Milled wedges in 54 (0.90) and 58 (1.05) and could not be happier.  There is no 53, but you could bend the 52 or 54 to that depending on the bounce you want.  Beautiful club too.

In the history of Maltby, I'm positive there has never been a time... where it can be so confusing on which iron to play.

They always have had some stud irons that everyone loved at the higher level. Then some bargain irons that you built up for beginners. Getting people into the game, with cost effective gear, but not an iron they fell in love with.

Now from nearly the entire line no matter the price point, you have an iron design that will perform beyond your expectations. The STI2 and the M890 can help transform budget conscious players games. The KE4 Max falls neatly in the middle. Now just look at the meat of the lineup. These irons could carry ANY OEM badge and be a massive hit.

Yes some of the offerings are getting pricey but you can honestly stay in the lower price point and make a phenomenal set of irons.

It's the best time to be a Maltby fan.

I was thinking this just the other day, I miss Ralph’s out of box designs for game improvement clubs, but there’s not a dog in this lineup. How can we be expected to pick one model and stick with it?

Honestly I have a lefty set I practice with that's STi2s through the short irons, and I really love that head. If I'd known about Maltby clubs a few years earlier, I would have gamed them on the right (for me normal) side. Just amazing value for that head. And with respect to the new offerings, especially on the iron side of things, it's just an embarrassment of riches at this point. OEMs sometimes don't have enough grip options on their websites IMO, so it can be a hassle in various ways like that. For kicks I just priced out a P790 9 iron as close as possible to my specs and it ended up just shy of $225 before taxes. The equivalent build for the TS1-IM 9 iron will be around $150. The same holds for the P7MBs vs the TS4s. So if I go 7-9 TS1-IM and P/GW TS4, I'm saving $375, which is not bad at all IMO.

Very sure.  Drivers, fairways, and hybrids have gear effect because the rearward COG is far enough behind the face for the effect to happen.  Irons and wedges do not.  This is why drivers, fairways and hybrids have a curved bulge/roll face, whereas irons/wedges have a flat face.

Here's an article on it...https://www.tutelman.com/golf/ballflight/gearEffect.ph

Link is dead. I've learned opposite of you. Per Adam Young

  • This effect is stronger the bigger the clubhead (hybrids, fairway woods and driver) but still causes issues in all clubs

https://www.adamyounggolf.com/gear-effect/

And generally speaking, My miss is a toe shot, and I know those those definitely draw more than center strike. Further, I've had trackman quizes where we calculate path, but its actually a trick question because the flight makes no sense based on the numbers, and the answer is that the shot was struck off center causing gearing and you can't simply calculate the path based on face and flight.

Not sure why the link won't work, but just go to tutleman .com.  Then in the "Golf stuff" menu, go to "impact and ball flight", then the article "all about gear effect".

The site you linked is just a showing an iron twisting open on toe strikes and closed on a heel strike.  It's not explaining why he thinks that any gear spin would occur with an iron.

Whatever gear effect that there is with irons is magnified by the fact that there is no bulge or roll on iron clubs.  Obviously, it depends a lot on the design of the iron and how far back the COG is.

Finally found time to get my full set of TS3's built last night with my KBS Tour shafts. Going to take them to the course this afternoon. Currently also testing ZX7 Mk II and Ping i230 irons to see what gets the spot in my bag for the next few years. I'll post some GC2 comparison numbers in the next few days if anybody is interested in the comparison with those other irons. Just based off looks at address, I think the TS3 is very well the best looking of the 3. It's a close race between it and the ZX7.

Hey, I was wondering how your shootout went?  I recently hit the Zx7 vs New Level 623cb my TS1s, and figured the TS3 would have probably been the more comparable iron.   Honestly I liked all the clubs quite a bit and they all felt good with nice flight.   Appearance at address ended up being the deciding factor for me.

So many good options at the moment.

So I took them out on the course and was noticing a bit of a left bias. I also seem to be having slightly more issues with turf interaction with the wider soles of the TS3. I'm not putting much stock in that because the ground here in Alabama is still mush and the bermuda is just starting to come out of dormancy. I will say that these hang in there with the two big boys in terms of distance and have that great forged feel. I also much prefer the look over the i230, and have no preference in looks between the ZX7 and TS3. They both look great. I was kind of holding off to reporting back because these haven't gotten a fair test just yet. I'm so familiar with the Srixon line and V-sole, having played the Z745 for 6 years. So more testing to be done. I will list some very brief testing results below on my GC2. More testing to come.

Two questions:  What is the difference between basic VCOG and actual VCOG.

Second, would there be a problem or problems with using the TS3's for someone who is steep into the ball with their irons with such a low VCOG number as the TS3?

I recently bought a set of 6-GW KE4 Max and had the 6-9 bent 1 degree weak to match what I’ve always played…how much is that going to impact the offset/forgiveness?

It will reduce the offset slightly. There should be no noticeable reduction in forgiveness.

1 degree is well within reason.

really good looking club, it looks like the leading edge is nice and preworn, maybe not Srixon level bevel, but enough to glide through the turf

I'm getting the Max Milled 56* (.90) and 52* (.90) with the steel Score shafts replacing my Kirkland wedges (STOP LAUGHING, they're decent wedges 🤣)  I just don't know which shaft flex to get.  I'm gaming Sim2 irons with KBS S flex but I am borderline R flex at 56 yrs. old.  Should I go with the stiff or regular flex.  OOOOR, for $10 more go with the graphite shaft?  I Want to order today but unsure about the shaft.

So, would you consider the TS1-IM comparable to the P790's? or the P770's?  I'm considering them as I am looking for the hollow body design like the P790.  I was considering the KE4 Max but I'm a picker on my irons shots so thought the sole on the TS1 / TS1-IM would be a good fit.

Likely closer to the p790s but the 770s and 790s are pretty close.

Common themes I have seen on wedge flexes seem to be either stick with the same shaft you play in your irons (including shaft brand) or go heavier and a softer flex.

I am curious as to why you’re going with the Max Milled over the TSW. I also want to grab some new wedges as I put the TS3s in play this season and am looking for a better gap at the tail end of the bag. Both wedges seem like great options. I like the looks of the Max Milled better, but think the grind option would be a better choice for me.

I am a bit older than you, but.. I went with the KE4 Max with the Rapport R-flex and could not be happier.  When I replaced my three M-series wedges is S-flex with two Max Milled, I used the Kuro Kage A-flex for more feel plus the fact that I seldom hit a full shot with them.  The Kuro is a 2B3M vs a 3B2M in the Rapport, so similar but softer.  It is working well for me.  Better out of the sand and really easy to hit high shots.  Does not feel whippy.  Still pretty new to me, but so far, not sorry I went this route.
