Anyone having balls get chewed up with the DBMs?  I have a simulator and hit a lot…I’m on my 5th Maltby set, which is TS3 DBMs with MMT 125 Stiffs….awesome but balls are getting chewed big time. Titleist AVX, same balls I’ve been using for over 2 years.

The grooves on a DBM are as sharp as an iron gets. So yes they tear up balls at first. It does get better. Remember the Chrome plating..  are on the grooves. DBM coatings are in the metal not on.

It's the grind.  The S is supposed to have more relief to have lower effective bounce than the A grind.  Unfortunately, it looks like the S grinds are backed up until September due to a variety of factors.

I hate to sound like an idiot, but what does that mean,?

The A grind has more bounce throughout the entire sole of the wedge. Front to back and toe to heel. There is some relief in spots on that grind. It’s an excellent grind for shots with a square to slightly open face. However because there is more bounce toward the rear of the sole as you open the face it increases the effective bounce and basically makes it harder to “slip” the club past the golf ball with limited contact point. The S grind has most of the bounce from the middle of the sole to the front edge. There is more relief in the rear and heel side to make it easier to open the face without adding as much bounce.

Now you are speaking my language...  toes balls galore with the irons lately.  What would you say you lost on toe hit with these, 10yds?

At the very least, anyone with a toe side pattern has to try a Maltby iron design.  Unmatched across their entire lineup

The TC Pro IST hybrids have been so good I had to try a Maltby iron.

KE4 Max 7 iron head and Nippon 950GH R flex shaft on the way. Playing LH limits my options but honestly it's probably a blessing as it forces trying a GI iron.

I currently play Haywood CB/MB combo with KBS Tour R flex at 2 degrees flat at 37" 7 iron length. So going to a more forgiving iron with a slightly lighter and softer shaft. KBS Tour at R is 110g trimmed. The Nippons are 94g in reg. Will go with 36.75" 7 iron length standard lie, trimming to 36.5" if needed later.

This should be a fun little experiment. If it works out, I buy and build the rest (5-G). If not, no huge investment lost.

I grabbed a ts3 7 iron to try from a member on here for that very reason. I don’t hate the 225 performance on my toe miss, but I’m also looking for something that makes iron play a bit easier.

Just wanted to come here and sing the praises of the KE4 TC Pro fairways. Drilled a small green on a par 5 from 206 with a 5 wood yesterday and played the same hole today and hit the green with a 7 wood from 188. Both shots had a wonderful high, penetrating ball flight and sat and spun like they were mid irons. Please don't ask about the putting on those holes.

Some pics: STi2 Gen 2 irons & TSW 52 & 56 wedges.  Tour Edge Driver and hybrid & my trusty Wilson C300 fairway.  Still have an open spot.  Maybe I'll go adjustable 7 wood.  That way up or down I can fit it between my 4 hybrid and adjustable 3 wood.

Of note, I am wearing a lime green polo and you can see the sole radius via the green reflection on each sole.  The higher vertical cog on these irons as opposed the TS3's I had are great for my swing.  Makes me think I would also be able to play the TS1-im and its higher vertical cog as well.

Founders Club Premium Cart Bag with 14 Way Organizer Divider Top

Bought May of 2021.  Other than slight color fading of the red on the top edge, it has held up really well.  It is about two inches taller than a standard cart bag.  About 20 rounds of golf each year.

Im very on the fence of ordering the Maxfli XC2 irons (would have to just take the DG Mid shafts as that is only stock option, otherwise everything else is full upcharge) or just ordering the TS3 irons through the custom shop and get choice of shaft.  The TS3 would be roughly $200 cheaper.  Any opinions?

Why pay more money for almost the exact same club?

I know they are similar but not identical.  Lofts are a bit different, and the internals are a bit different too.  My buddy is thinking I should get the  Maxflis instead so here I am.  Wondering how many may have hit both side by side

XC2 and TS3 are definitely not the same, even aside from the lofts.

I think they are most similar to the new TS3.5 that will be released, by Golfworks estimates, June.  Look at the specs in the catalog on page 207 and compare to the Maxfli's.  I believe they were designed or co-designed at the same time and the TS3.5 platform was the base for the Maxfli.

Edit:

Per Britt in the Golfworks clubmaking forum, the XC2 and XC3 were designed by Maltby and off the TS3.5 platform.

Quick threadjack: I have the same bag. Bought a demo model when they had them. REALLY nice and love ability to lock woods and hybrids into place. Only downside is it doesn't fit into a Club Glove travel carrier. It was literally 2-3 inches away from zipping shut, but no bueno. Still, a GREAT bag.

Lets talk blade length:

Maltby obviously puts a lot of focus on the blade length of the irons and getting weight out to the toe for stability and forgiveness on toe strikes, but what about heel strikers?

I did a fitting yesterday with Foreward golf, and although I havent got my official "perscription" yet I've already been thinking over some of the data.

It was my first time using foot spray and I ever realized how much I hit the ball out of the heel. Like consistently heel side every single time. The fitter initially thinks maybe something with a smaller blade length would suit me. Like a Blueprint or T100.

Knowing that weight towards the toe improves forgiveness out of the toe, I'm now wondering if a smaller blade length and weight towards the heel is actually better for a heel striker like me, hypothetically speaking.

On the other hand I tend to miss left, so weight towards the toe could also slow down face closure?

I was pretty set on going TS4 this summer but this has me on the fence! Thoughts?

From my experience playing 6-7 sets of blades over the last 20 years, heel strikes are perfect strikes for blades, and TS4 is really no exception. As long as you avoid the hosel, your golden. I used to live on the heel in my younger years, but am drifting towards the toe as I get older.

I have a set of Bridgestone 220MB's right now (for sale), which look tiny, but are really not that much shorter than the TS4's in blade length. But the TS4's blow them away as you creep towards the toe.

As a long time blade player, I agree.
my experience is over time you will find yourself hitting the center more often and when you hit toe side you will be stunned at how little the ball flight is effected.

That's the great thing about the longer horizontal COG or "C-dimension" that all Maltby irons are designed with.  It creates more face area to work with, where they are forgiving towards the toe, but also not unforgiving towards the heel.

This is because impacts that are toe-side of the COG will always tend to twist an iron/wedge more than impacts that are heel-side of the COG.

Having more face area to work with in both the horizontal and vertical directions is their design philosophy in making an iron more "playable" or easier to hit

No idea what other clubs you’re considering but for me, the ts4 are magic. I’ve just sold off 5 sets of irons since getting these. Well, 2 aren’t sold yet but they’ll be gone soon. I keep thinking it’s a honeymoon but then I’ll get a 7 and 5 iron from some remaining sets and test in the sim and I just can’t make bad contact with the ts4. They’re very consistent across the face and look 1000x better than any other club I’ve used.

I just added the ts4 5-7 irons as well after initially building a combo set of te+v4 because I was scared of the ts4 longer irons. I’m hitting the ts4 better and it’s not close. I dare say these might be my unicorn irons.
