So one good round down and 3 range sessions, this morning's off the grass tees, and I am just head over heels for these irons.  I am so impressed by the way the Aldila NV graphite shafts are working for my swing, the irons feel perfectly balanced (any concern I had over swingweight etc. with graphite shafts was unfounded).  Even love the grips so much I bought another 10 to outfit the rest of my clubs and have some spares.

 

I had a couple of new swing feels, working on some self-diagnosed early extension after going down a TPI video rabbit hole and holy cow.  Don't think I've ever smoked a 9iron so hard in my life.  These irons just feel fantastic, nice solid thump, great turf interaction.  They're just the real deal!!

 

This thread is a real gem, so many golfers have found great clubs, built to their specs with premium shafts, for WAY less than the big names.  I hope more future playing partners ask about them so I can help spread the gospel.  The Maltby name/brand may not be sexy but these clubs rule.

The Max 7i is 30°. The IST 6 is 29°. I carry the 7i 155-162. But can easily step that up. The 6h is 165-170. So it naturally  fit right in. 

There are so many intangibles with the 6h. I made crazy shots with that club all week. Tee box, rough, sidehill-uphill lie. The very last shot of the week to save par and keep a 78 or better score going for the week, was a fairway bunker on 18. Lip on the bunker, ,playing 185 uphill. Any one who knows me would bet I'd leave that in the bunker lip. I hate fairway bunkers. I took a rip with the 6h to 20' from the flag. No way I'm making that shot with a 6i... no way!.

 

I'm trying out the IST 5H this weekend but on my initial range time I ran into the same issue I've had for many years with higher lofted woods.  I hit down so much on my clubs (old balata swing LOL) that the ball just spins up and I lose distance.  So I've always needed lower spinning woods and hybrids, even using 13* 3W for quite a while.  My current hybrids are old Adams Pro A12.

 

The IST goes REALLY high and at the range wasn't carrying any farther than the TS4 6I.  I'm sure the combo of the shaft (went with Score LT since the MPF hybrids weren't in stock) and my swing didn't help.  I see the potential benefit of it as it was pretty straight and easy to hit.  Just a mile in the air 😃 I have an older MPF Hybrid shaft that I think I will put in before the weekend as I don't think the Score pairs well with it for me.  

 

P.S. The TS4 6I was so good that I ordered the 7-PW as soon as I got home.  Putting them together tonight.

IMO-- Maltby headcovers are GREAT quality.  I bought my wife a set of the white ones-- great looking and fit well. Real functional.   

 

I have the hybrid cover on my #4 IST.    It is great..

This might have to be my next purchase.. the problem would be finding an open spot in my golf bag.. and would this be considered a 15th club? If so I might have to ditch one of my wedges. 

At 50+ and the beneficiary of several knee surgeries, I can tell you to forget the cane and keep that extra wedge… wedges are the perfect length to use as a cane!

Also.. for all the whippy shaft whack jobs out there like me, and if anybody's see the OttoPhlex experiment on the other forum, I glued up a Maltby UL A flex for my Cobra DS-X.. testing these out tonight on the sim

 

 

I basically got an identical setup in the mail today. 9 Wood + MPF Pro + Stiff. I had it built short too after watching a Ping tour truck video where they said they basically built all their 7W and 9W short for tour players. I play all my other clubs short so I figured why not. 

I also got a 6i TS4 and 6i TS3 with the same MPF + Stiff shafts. Looking forward to testing on the sim this weekend (hopefully) against my ZXI5. I'm a bit concerned that the shafts are too soft but I'll trust the data on the sim. Main concern is hitting a good spin number, ZXI5 are a bit low spin for my liking, and dispersion. 

After over a year of lurking in this thread, I finally have some maltby in my life.

this.  Mine is bent to 25 and contact/ball flight is very consistent. 
 

Question for you all - what is the most cost effective way to ship these days? Pirate ship?  Ever had any issues with them?

UPS through pirate ship looks pretty cheap. About 40% less than USPS Ground Advantage, but a little slower.

Not in the 3/4/5 slots. I've used them as a 2I replacement, but they honestly don't fly that much higher than irons for me. Great for off the tee but not so good out of the rough or attacking greens.  I'm eagerly waiting the TS-UI but it keeps getting pushed back.

 

If I could find a 5H Adams Idea Pro I would jump on it because the 3H and 4H are great.  Smaller heads with iron like faces and surprisingly pretty forgiving (not on thin hits though).  I really liked the profile of the IST and it was a good way to experiment to see if even a 5H is an option because I would then replace the 3H and 4H with ISTs.

 

I really think the Score LT shaft just isn't the right profile for that head so I'm not giving up yet.

Price is going up on True Temper shafts August 1, so they are only going to get more expensive.  Basically all steel is going up due to steel prices / tariffs.

I'm moving an order up for a Score shaft. Assuming tariffs will hit all steel shaft brands in the near future, curious how much prices will go up..

Quick range session after work. 100 balls. Ramblings: 

Clubs Hit:
- 9W 40.5" (1 inch short)
- TS4 6i (37")

- TS3 6i (37")
- All MPF Pro + Stiff 
- Srixon ZXI5 6i (37"), Modus 120 (current gamer)

Me:

- HCP: 15? (I don't track but typically shooting 85-90 on a fairly tight/wooded 6200 yard course)

- ~85mph 7i

Spent 80% of my time on the irons. I'd hit 3-5 with each before swapping them out.

Irons: 

Favourites of the day:

1. TS4
2. ZXI5
3. TS3

I thought the TS3 would be best suited for me but I could not put two good shots together with it for some reason. It also really wanted to go left on me. TS4 was the standout, just ahead of the ZXI5. Dispersion seemed to be the tightest. I like the ball-flight the best too. I would wager the better dispersion was due to the higher spin compared the ZXI5.

Despite the ZXI5 being marketed squarely as a players distance iron and having stronger lofts than the TS4, I found I was only getting an extra 5 or so yards out of the Srixon. Mishits seemed to perform equally well too. Very forgiving. I felt no less confident standing over the TS4 6i than I do with my ZXI5.

I have a shallow angle of attack and am a bit of a picker, so I'm wondering if the narrower sole/less bounce on the TS4 is what made it so agreeable for me. 

In conclusion, it felt like I was throwing more darts with the TS4 without any real noticeable loss in forgiveness and/or distance compared to the Srixons. TS3 will get another chance on the sim, but it's days are looking numbered. YMMV.

Shafts

The obvious elephant in the room is the drastic difference between the Modus 120 and the ~80g graphite maltby shaft. Traditionally I have enjoyed hitting lighter graphite shafts. I felt they helped me improve my tempo and timing. This year I impulse bought the Srixons and have been playing with them exclusively for months, so I think I've adjusted to the weight even though it was out of my sweet spot. So, going from that to graphite felt super weird, I wont lie. 

I'm not exactly sold on the shafts yet. They are quite a bit softer than what I was expecting. I'm wondering if I should have gone with X-Stiff. To be fair, last time I was fit I was put into 105 Modus stiff or 95g Steelfiber stiff...so both my gamers and my maltbys are outside the recommended range, and after hitting both side by side I do think a ~100g shaft would be best. 

Practically speaking the difference in shafts only really presented themselves with my misses. I was turning it over more with the lighter softer graphite in the TS4/TS3, and I would leave them out to the right with the ZXI5/Modus combo. 

Wood:

Didn't hit a ton of balls with it like I said. I still have to see about this one. It felt noticeably dead off the face compared to my Ping G425 7W if I'm being honest. My first few shots were terrible and came out low and hot (didn't even think that was possible with a 9 wood). Likely user error but it is cut short and after playing around with ball position I managed to find a bit of a groove and hit several nice shots in a row.

The MPF shaft in the 9W is also softer and lighter than the Ping Tour 2.0 Black (or something) that is in my 7 wood, so that took a little adjustment. I was pressed for time and didn't have a chance to play with the loft sleeve. I was turning them over a bit to the left but nothing terrible. Maybe X-Stiff here would have been the play too... 

I enjoyed it but will just have to dial it in a little more. One thing I was happy about though was the distance. Part of the reason I cut this short was because I want this to sit in my 5 iron spot because I have not been getting along with my ZXI5 5 iron, mainly due to leaving it a mile right. The yardage gap between the 6 irons and short 9 wood was looking pretty perfect to my eye, so hopeful that I got that right. The bag makeup that I'm toying with is Dr, 7w, 9w, 6i-LW. That said, I am now very interested to try out a TS4 5I/MPF because I dont think I left a single 6i out to the right today. 

Next Steps:

1. Get on the SIM (tomorrow morning potentially)
2. Hit off grass
3. Buy more clubs?

They are already $40.

Even at their current prices, the cost of steel shafts makes it a lot easier to jump to graphite.

Dart V's in the TS4 are the most accurate irons I've ever hit. Currently using 120's, but I'm going to put 105's in my 4&5 irons over the winter.

You must be looking at another shaft? The Score shaft is not going to be $50 a shaft. It’s $13 list price right now.
