@Popeye64 - is it overly simplistic to say that the only difference between the TE Forged and the DBM (aside from the finish and 1 degree of loft) is the bounce on the sole of the club? Is the 1 degree of bounce difference noticeable between the two?

They are virtually indistinguishable in terms of performance. Yes the 1° stronger should if all things are equal go further. It's negligible as well with the added bounce. The two irons are the same.

The biggest difference between the two is the finish. The DBM are not as soft feeling as the TE. They are infact a harder surface. The diamonized metal finish is real. They will take forever to wear out the grooves.

My experience with these irons has them looking like they are brand new even after several seasons. The face will grey a bit but they other wise look new.

If you tend to keep irons for 4 or 5 seasons then definitely go with the DBM. The TE in that time length will look beat up with bag chatter and play wear.

EDIT- deleted my content (I read TS3 in my head when question was about the TE vs DBM)

They also set up different visually with the different topline thicknesses and heel heights.  While this may not mean anything as far as performance numbers are concerned it may very well influence confidence, etc, which can impact delivery to the ball.  I'm just starting out my testing of the TS3, but I can say the DBM shorter irons set up better to my eye, while the TS3 5 iron looks better to me than the DBM.  Great thing about Maltby is it's a relatively inexpensive experiment to try a few out to see what you like.

Not sure if you caught that he was referring to the original TE (not TS3), which is the same shape design as the DBM

Pulled and sold the AMT shafts that came in the TS3's I bought. Hoping to have a set of KBS Tour Black Pearl shafts delivered in the next few days that I'm going to put in and get the SW where I like it. I'm pumped to get them built. I'm pretty happy with my ZX7's at the moment, but I'm getting antsy seeing the TS3 heads just sitting there waiting to be put in play.

Anyone else waiting impatiently for the TS1-IM's to drop? Britt @ golfworks has said early/mid April, really hoping that doesn't get pushed back.

Things are suuuper clean, with a thinner topline/sole than the OG TS1. I love my Wilson CB's but these IM's might be a real contender, I'll be building a 7i asap.

Really hope that time frame is accurate. I got anxious and couldn't pass on a deal I found for some Callaway Rogue ST Pro irons. But will still be having a TS1-IM 7i built as soon as they're available.

Any advantage for the KE4 Max over the PTM? The Max uses one less club to get from 48* to 25* not sure if that’s good or bad.

The Max has a longer "C-dimension" or horizontal COG.  This will give a bit wider area across the face for relatively solid contact and more forgiving toe side

I understand that difference I guess my question is about the gaps as well as turf interaction

During my run with the KE4 Max last season I never had issues with gaps anywhere in the set. With any new irons that differ in lofts there is a slight learning curve. Gaps were never an issue.

Sole wise the two irons are fairly close in size. The PTM has a heavily relieved leading edge that can add effective bounce. I am a digger and never had any issues with either iron design. Both play very similar.

One place the KE4 Max may stand out is when a player hits it all over the face. The cavity of the KE4 is Pronounced!!. PTM is more of a blended cavity.

If you are considering upgrading the PTM the swap should be seamless. But one draw back is the KE4 will not age as well. You can see by the two soles the KE4 does not hold up in the, being pretty stage.

OK all you Maltby fans out there.  I have an older Callaway X 3H (2015-2016) with a Project X shaft that is in good shape.  The epoxy is failing and the head is now loose.  I want to pull the head and get a Maltby head.  I have a U21 HyWay that I hit very well and I currently have a Ping G30 3H and a new Cleveland 3+ 18* Hywood that I'm starting to hit well.  I am considering putting a KE4 TC 2H 17*, 3H 19* or the 23* HyWay BUT I'M OPEN and LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS!

I have a 2 hybrid, but couldn’t hit it. I’m not sure if the smaller head, but I’m having trouble with it. Have you considered a 5 or 7 wood.
my rule of thumb- stick with what you’re hitting well now. Stick with the U21 for now.

I can't offer you any help. You listed 6 clubs that I would hit about the same distance.

I would pick 2 with the widest loft gap that you think you hit well, and go for it!

I'd like to see them change the Max to a satin tumbled finish.  Something similar to what Ping has done with their 17-4 stainless irons

My DBM heads out of the box came at exactly the same loft as TE forged,   ie 1 degree weaker than the DBM Spec

I find it hard to believe Golfworks would have retooled for the DBM head, for the sake of changing 1 degree of loft, so surely specs should have been the same.  I know a local guy who had his own heads built and the custom tooling by the manufacturer is $1000 per head, not cheap.

Are you implying golfworks is being dishonest about the DBM specs, because I find that harder to believe.

I used my TS3 5 iron and DBM 6 thru 9 for a round this weekend.  The TS3 5 iron has quickly become my favorite club in the bag, and I hit some great iron shots with the DBM as well.  I think I'll be rolling with the TS3+DBM mixed set for awhile, lots of confidence in these irons.

No - its within stated tolerances, and i continue to buy product from them.     maybe the truth is the lofts are half a degree off and some people round up and some round down.

What lofts did yours measure up to?

The loft difference between the DBM and TE are due to the thickness of the chrome finish. All irons are within a tolerance plus or minus a degree is damn accurate.

So out on the course today. Played the front nine with all TS3.

On the back nine I'm dropping two balls at 7 iron length on nearly every hole. The KE4 Max is more than holding its own. With the 2° stronger loft its playing exactly that. About a half club longer. But.. its a straighter ball flight. It hits and releases a foot. So it's spinning a little less. The TS3 is hitting and backing up slightly.

Early results are way way too close to tell. Sure the TS3 feels like a more solid iron. But damn the KE4 Max is just doing work.

Thanks for sharing! Given the price difference, the KE4 Max seems like an outstanding option.
