I placed an order for the KE4 Max irons (6-GW) and should get them this week. I'm very stoked to see if they live up to the hype. I demo'd the 799's and 749's from Sub 70 last month and liked them a lot, but really wanted to put the value of Maltby's offerings to test.

Order process was incredibly smooth and I even had to ask them about some post-ordering adjustments. I forgot to add that I wanted a different set of grips and lie adjustment done, but the basic customer support email was really quick to respond and make sure the adjustments were confirmed with me.

My next step will be the driver and woods or hybrids. Has anyone done any comparison testing with the Maltby driver and hybrid lineups versus other OEM's?

I'm not looking to win any tournaments or become a scratch golfer, just gain consistency in my strikes and get some decent distance for me swing speed (80 MPH for irons, 90-100 for driver).

The ke4 max driver and tc tour fairways are hard to beat. They’ll be just as long as anything you try.

Finished building the TS4s with SF FC80s last night. Turned out pretty nice. Will take them to the range this evening. Need a few swings before a 1-day local competition on Wednesday.

I can’t believe you caved to the powerful Grip lobby! (Also these look incredible)

Question for you all on the ferrule topic: do you find that you’re able to remove the ferrules intact after they’ve been installed with a dab of epoxy? I have a few BB&F ferrule sets that I would ideally like to move to new sets/shafts as I continually tinker.

If using steel shafts, yes.

When removing the heads with a torch, wrap the ferrule with a wet paper towel folded a couple times so it protects the ferrule from melting. Sometimes the shaft is hot enough, so I use a rubber clamp around the ferrule and twist after the head is removed. It sometimes is enough to break the bond. If not, put some heat to the shaft tip. Grab the ferrule with the rubber clamp again, and try twisting.

I've had some deform because of too much heat. But it's worth a try if you need to save them.

I went to the local 2nd Swing here in Dallas and tested a couple of more "budget" drivers on my lunch break. I hit the 21 Big Bertha, 2016 Big Bertha Fusion, PXG 0311 XF Gen5, Tour Edge Exotics E722, and  Tour Edge HL4 (2018 release). I ended up hitting the Tour Edge HL4 incredibly well and went ahead and bought it on the spot since I had some strore credit and they're running a 10% off sale. I've got a new driver for $45 and was easily carrying it 200+ with my mid-90's driver swing.

I may try a couple of more Tour Edge drivers, as I just loved the feel. I felt like the HL4 was too good to pass up. It felt amazing at impact and I had really good clubface control. I can trade in my remaining clubs I won't be hitting and use the credit towards either a couple of lessons or a fitting for hybrids/fairway woods at 2nd Swing.

Does Golfworks cover return shipping if I build a demo hybrid or fairway wood and decide to go in a different direction?

Nope. When people refer to demo clubs they are buying the clubs rather than it being a loaner program, if that makes sense. So if you get a club it's yours 😁

BTW that's a great price for a club that you hit well!

I really enjoy my Tour Edge stuff. Currently using the C722 driver, woods, and hybrid; had the E722 driver until I sold it to a buddy.

Aside from testing the Maltby irons I also put together TSW 52 & 60 wedges and a KE4 TC 5 hybrid.  The 60* shows a lot of promise even though the sole is not that much like the Callaway MD5 Wide sole Low Bounce I've been gaming.  It seems possibly easier to hit from the fairway and rough, but I haven't gotten the hang of it from the hardpan that passes for bunkers.  The leading edge does seem like it could be a bit sharp.  I thought I might wind up with a Taylormade Hi Toe Low Bounce 60, but even though the sole looks closer to the Callaway, I struggled more with it compared to the TSW.

The 52 is also really nice, but I think I need more bounce as I tend to get steep with the Gap Wedge.  It reminds me of a Mizuno wedge I liked, but ultimately found 8* bounce is not quite enough and my current Gap (also MD5) has 10*.  I thought the wider sole of the TSW would provide more effective bounce, but it doesn't seem to be quite enough for me.  I'll play with it some more, but I don't think Maltby has a GW that would suit me.  It's a beautiful wedge though and one of my golf buddies loved it.

I built up the KE4 5h a few times (as well as a 4h) and just didn't get along with it.  This time I used an old NV105 shaft and made it pretty hefty and finally got some good results.  I haven't gamed it yet, but hit a LOT of good shots at the range.  I probably would have put it in the bag, but the KE4 Max 5i was working so well (and it's been windy) so I used that.  Now that I have the weight right I may try a Rapid Taper 105 in it as I'm liking that shaft.

I brought out some TS4 clubs to go against the PTM Blacks. I've found the TS4s to be a bit spinny for me and wanted to see an in play result.

These are two nearly identical swings. Baby cut, 165y 7 irons. Ball was a -Prov1x.

The TS4 spun back nearly 12'. The PTM spun back 2'. I repeated this on a few holes and the TS4 spun back greater every time.

I do have to say that the TS4 PW just seems to have some serious pop to it. Even a 3/4 swing just goes and SPINS.

If you look close you can see both ball marks. TS4 was dead pin high. PTM was just above by 4'.

Could be explained by newer grooves vs used grooves?

On 10/6/2023 at 4:28 PM, Popeye64 said:

That's a possibility but the Blacks are low mileage and those grooves hardly ever wear. There is a stark difference.

When I say the two balls were identical they would have over lapped in a tracer view.

I'll spend some more time tinkering.

The only other possibility I can think of, is that the higher effective bounce of the PTM is creating a slightly different impact condition as compared to the lower effective bounce of the TS4, resulting in lower spin.

This wouldn't necessarily be a factor for all players, but it could be for the more "digger" type

More bounce would put the strike lower on the face and the PTM has a lower VCOG. That indicates that the PTM should spin more if all else is equal. There is one degree of loft different between the two, with the TS4 having more. I do think that strike location could play a difference but I don't know if it plays that much of a difference. Regardless, I'd be pretty happy with either of these results from that distance.

A strike lower on the face is an impact condition where the AVCOG is higher in relation to the center of the ball

Another vote for the TEE C721, it easily beat out my Ping G425 Max. And then I put a better shaft (for me) in it.

I have 5i-60* but I’m thinking of selling them, at least the irons. I turned 60 this year and the lack of distance has been pretty startlingly so the old school lofts may have to go. Easily my favorite clubs looks wise I’ve ever had.

I'm still in the part of my journey where swing speed is increasing as I improve, and I plan on enjoying that while I can. Ultimately for me I don't care what number is stamped on the club, so long as I know my gapping. But there are certainly a lot of irons out there that will help you get back to the ball speed you are used to.

Do not let ego get to you if you hit them well.  If the new lofts let you hit longer, it is because the old 6i is now labeled a 7i.  Just renumber yours with a magic marker.

Exactly so.  A 34* club is a 34* club, regardless of what someone has stamped on the sole.

Club number is meaningless.  Loft is what matters.

I’m trying out a combo of MMB-17 Blacks 7-PW and DBM 5+6 iron this weekend. I just put some Nippon 950gh stiff shafts in them. Hit them at the range yesterday. They felt fantastic. Distance? Yes, they are not very long. Probably 5 yards less than my older 712 AP1 irons. I can get used to that. I really liked the height I was getting with the DBM’s. With my slower swing speed, loft is your friend.

I am due to be 63 in Feb.  I understand the distance thing.  I have been fighting the loss with RT 95 Reg flex shafts in the TS-3.   Very consistent.   Looking to build the TS-1IM in NV graphite.  I have them in 75/85/95  to do an ascending weight build.

Not sure they will be any better.   Just have to try them!!!

There is a bit more to the loft conversation as presented here. This one time I think the OEM marketing machine did themselves wrong. (Iron) technology has changed in the last decades for the better. Just jacking up loft with the old tech would have produced unplayable launch, spin and decent conditions.

but the progress in cog placement and other tech improvements have allowed for decreasing loft quite a bit while still producing playable characteristics. With one of the main advantages that shaft lengths can be decreased by 1/2 inch throughout the set. In my experience that has the biggest impact on playability for amateurs. Now whether that is actually done is a different conversation.

Marketing focused on the addition of distance, and although true there is a lot more to the story than that. These are true tech improvements helping golfers.

Adding context....

I'm also 60 years old.  I'm down 40-50 yards off the tee from my peak.  With irons, I'm a club or club and a half shorter than I was 20 years ago, but another couple clubs shorter than my peak.

Renumbering the lofts I use isn't giving me more distance.  It's an illusory change.
