A friend of mine always ask what club I hit.   He then proceeds to take hit the same club I did only to come up short.   His answer always is if I hit that well it’s on the green

I’m the exact opposite. I’ve got a buddy that really hits it well and his hands are always ahead at impact. I look at what he hits and I always take one more club then him.

Also an illusion.  Sub-0.7" vertical CGs have existed for 40 years.

Though not currently, aside from the TS3 or the TE Forged (and TE Forged ancestors).

Ultimately, it's not quite relevant to the point I'm making.  🙂

It’s not only a question of loft vs club number. A 30* 6 iron head weighs less than a 30* 7 iron so it needs a longer shaft. Loft progression, like many I couldn’t understand the idea of 5 degree progression but I think I’m starting to see it. The standard 10-12 yard difference seems to be shrinking as my club head speed decreased.

I always get a kick out of that convo on the course. Complete stranger asks "what club you use?" Me "PW".. stranger "cool me too".. me: "what loft is your PW?".. stranger: "huh?"

I always ask "what yardage club did you use? 150, 160, etc.  My 150 club is different than everyone else.  I'll be 57 in January and I, too, have lost distance.  I currently game TM Sim2 irons with KBS Max 85 S flex and I feel they are getting too stiff for my swing.  I get 150 yards on a 28.5* 7i.  I'm 5'11 and 250lbs.  6 years ago I was getting 150 with my 8i.

My SIL has a set of Maltby STi2's -1/4" R flex Score shafts (about 3*-4* more lofted) and I get similar distances to my Sim2's.  I definitely need R flex shafts.

I have a 55 gr. Atmos S flex in my TM M4 (2021 release) driver and get an average of 225-235 so S flex shaft on the driver is fine.

Long story short (yea right), There's alot more than loft that results in the yardages.  I firmly believe that shafts have more affect on that than simply the loft of the club.  I'm sure I can get 5-10 more yards on my 7i if I put more of a mid launch R flex shaft on it than the shaft currently in the club.

Every time someone asks me what club I hit I respond "it's 155 playing 150" or whatever the yardage is. Sounds like we'd have a fun round together.

Absolutely!  I say the same thing!  If you're ever in the New York (Metro NY-Long Island) area hit me up!

Unlike your handle, I'm loud BTW.

I’m trying out a combo of MMB-17 Blacks 7-PW and DBM 5+6 iron this weekend. I just put some Nippon 950gh stiff shafts in them. Hit them at the range yesterday. They felt fantastic. Distance? Yes, they are not very long. Probably 5 yards less than my older 712 AP1 irons. I can get used to that. I really liked the height I was getting with the DBM’s. With my slower swing speed, loft is your friend.

That combo should feel amazing. Those 950gh shafts are great.

Well Bethpage is on my bucket list!

I'm loud too, the user name is in reference to how much I like subwoofers lol. Can never have too much bass!

There is a bit more to the loft conversation as presented here. This one time I think the OEM marketing machine did themselves wrong. (Iron) technology has changed in the last decades for the better. Just jacking up loft with the old tech would have produced unplayable launch, spin and decent conditions.

The reason this idea doesn't really hold up, is because if it were true then the next club down in your set to whatever you're comparing it to, would then have unplayable launch and spin.

In other words, a 44* club that is stamped with a 'P', doesn't suddenly have more playable launch and spin compared to if it had a '9' stamped on it

I’m with you there. But playing less loft with a shorter shaft while maintaining same distance and launch conditions makes for a more playable club correct?

I'm not sure what you mean by "maintaining same distance"....because an iron that has 2-4* less loft is almost always going further, whether it's a 1/2" shorter or not.  The exception being when we pass our point of diminishing returns with lower iron loft, which for most is about 24* and under

Unrelated to the loft question: I have been toying with the idea of having a set of irons for wet conditions and a set for dry. I like the DBMs but I am concerned the soles may be too narrow/leading edge too sharp for wet turf. Would the TS3 be better in those conditions?

I wouldn’t bother buying a new set of irons just for weather conditions. What happens if it starts raining during your round? Just learn to hit your golf ball when it’s wet. Back in your stance a touch, make ball contact first.

Those soles are not that thin.

Wait, I forgot where I was. WRX! But a set for dry, wet, windy, calm, sunny, cloudy, cold, hot, hitting it good, hitting it bad. 😂

I’m sorry.
Learn how to hit the clubs you have. You will be better for it. (Says the guy who’s gone through 3 sets of irons this year)

Ah, so being better at golf is the answer! I feel so silly not having thought of that.

If you think changing your equipment in different weather conditions will let you play better golf, by all means, go for it.

You can do what you want.

Have been following this thread and resisting the urge, but last night ordered a custom setup TS4 4 iron.   Based on the numbers should be more forgiving than my current set (MP20 HMB).  If it looks as good in person as some of the online pics and is easy to hit, the rest of the set will follow.

This is literally a club tech subforum of a forum already dedicated to being incredibly nerdy about equipment. Of course just improving overall is the best option and of course I’m already trying to do that. This was an equipment nerd question for a group of much more experienced and knowledgeable equipment nerds, and even more specifically people who know more about the brand in question. Do I expect it would make me play better in wet conditions? Probably not much. Would it be a fun project? Yes! As you said, this is GolfWRX. This is literally the purpose of the forum.

This actually is a very valid question. The DBM have a fairly sharp leading edge. Even though the sole is wide yes they CAN dig in. Most of the newer design have a relieved leading edge. That relieved edge goes a long way to fighting a buried club head.

One reason I loved the PTM set was a heavily relieved front edge. The KE4 Max has a nice relieved leading edge with a wide sole. On a muddy course this would be my iron of choice. The TS3 has a softer leading edge but also has a V type sole. So again it should help considerably.

In dry conditions the turf interaction completely changes. Instead of digging in an iron will tend to skip thru.

Turn the clock back when I played a set of MMB-17s I failed miserably in wet conditions. They were just as sharp as the DBM with a very thin sole width. On those days I played the KE4 Tour+. In dry or county club turf conditions where an iron glides through turf, the MMB-17 were amazing.

So a set of irons to game during extended wet seasons is not out of the question.

Changing your swing from a digger to a picker is a daunting task. Just ask me how I know.

Was hoping you would weigh in! I have built a couple KE4 Max heads for my dad and don’t think I like the look of them for myself, but the TS3s might be a better move. I live in southern Oregon, so we have very damp late fall through early spring and then very dry otherwise, so it’s a fairly distinct seasonal difference. My home course is generally pretty long and fast in summer with a steady wind, and in winter is damp but not muddy. I also play the Bandon Dunes courses several times in late fall and winter when it’s cheap for Oregon residents, and frankly I’d give up 2 strokes a round the rest of the year to be able to play well in Bandon.

The new version TE+ and DBM version will have a more radiused leading edge, with the look and playability being very similar.  In addition, if you had the lofts increased by 2* to spec off a 46* Pw and 30* 6i, it would increase the bounce by that same amount.  Maybe that's the design that could be your ideal for a variety of conditions

I like this idea! I’m excited to see how those end up playing. I’d also love it if they just started offering a DBM version of all their forged heads.

My wife is an Italian from the Southside of Chicago. It took me some time to realize that what sounds like yelling and fighting, is somehow not actually yelling and fighting.
