I can imagine.  My wife's family is Italian from Queens. I can't get a word in and my grandfather was Italian from the Bronx but I'm a mutt lol.

My kids are mutts.  My wife is German/Austrian and Czech Jew.  What can I say, I have a thing for blonde hair and blue eyes!

OK, unrelated......I went to PGASS today and kit some TE E722 Vibracore with KBS Tour 70 graphite R flex.  My SS was ranging from 79-83mph and I was getting 147-157+ with a few at 160-162 carry w/7i

I also hit the Titleist 350 with AMT white 90 R flex steel.  When I hit the titleist center face it was butter but that was one out of every 4-5 shots.  The others were clunky and distance was much less.  The Tour Edge felt buttery and even my miss hits were 147 yards.  I definitely like the longer face.  I don't think the TS1-IM would fit me with the smaller head.  I know the lofts are a little jacked but I'm playing the TM Sim2 irons w/KBS Max 85 steel S flex and the TE is 1* stronger.  I never hit my 7i like that.  I get about 150 yards on my 7i.  the 70 gram graphite felt really good.  I never played graphite before.

Now I'm really confused as to what iron and shaft to get now.

Anybody know anything about these Maltby KE4 irons? Best I can find is that they came out in 2006 and are pretty traditionally lofted. It seems they have a low CG, medium sole width, and fairly low bounce.

I know this thread generally follows the new releases for Maltby, but since it's sort of become the de facto all things Maltby thread, I thought I'd ask here.

Not sure what to recommend for shafts but from the clubs you mentioned, I'd say TS3 would be a fantastic option. Lofts won't be quite as strong but definitely in the wheelhouse for feel, performance, and looks.

I play the TS4's with KBS C-Taper Lite 110 shafts and absolutely love them! I chose them over the TS3 and TS1 IM's for the looks and possible edge on playability. That said, I recently built a set of TS3's for my dad with TT Elevate ETS shafts that Golfworks have under the deals page. I could EASILY play his clubs and forget all about the TS4. Not saying anything bad about the TS4 and I'm very stoked to play them. The TS3 though can do everything that the TS4 can do and I might even say that his setup feels a little better. The profile and looks fit well within the "player's" category.

That's the original KE4 iron design and was very popular.  They then changed the name to the KE4 u30, but it was the same design and specs.  That design remained in their lineup for about 10 years, indicating how well it did

I played a set firs out 4yrs and they were, and are, very nice irons. I could easily play them again.

Seems like the KE4 S would be the maturation of those designs......specs similar.

Currently playing the DBM forged and ordered a KE4 Max 7 iron to test as my miss is most definitely toe side. Was reading about the shorter hosel length of the Max and was curious if the shaft pulled from my DBM 7 iron would play standard length or I needed to get another shaft for testing.

The relevant measure for this is Bottom Bore to Ground Measurement and I know for DBM it’s 1”. I can’t find it quickly for the KE4 Max but I bet it’s on the Maltby forum somewhere or you could ask on the product page. Regardless it wouldn’t be more than like 1/4” off.

Not comparing the two directly but I hadn't realized that once you start getting into KBS shafts, certain DTCs (like Takomo irons) are significantly less expensive than the newer Maltby releases. Not by a lot mind you but you can get a set of Takomo 201 4-PW with KBS Tour Stiff irons for $589 before tax and shipping. Now, you don't have any customization options, seemingly, but I was shocked that a 4-PW in the TS-3 with KBS Tour would run me $700+. I am surprised at how expensive that is, I guess? Still much less than the Major OEMs but I guess gone are the days that you can get the newer Maltby sets for $500 (unless you do the packs). Am I looking at this correctly?

I guess the other option is to just buy the heads and then pull my current KBS Tour shafts and drop them into the Maltby heads but then the heads still run you about $385 at that point, right? So might as well just see if you can get along with the TT LT Score Pak at $435.99 for 7 clubs maybe?

TLDR - The custom options seem surprisingly expensive but if you can make the standard paks work the value is seemingly tremendous.

Call your order in and ask to substitute the shaft in the pack. I've done it a few times in Canada and they always let me. They just charge the difference between the stock and upgraded shaft.

That helps, thanks @iamlowsound! So the LT Score Shaft is currently $9.99 but I know it has been $12.99 in the past. Let's call it $10. KBS Tour is $42. So the incremental cost difference per club on shafts is $32.

$435 + [(42-10)*(7)] = $659

A good savings from what I had originally calculated but still fairly steep. The other option is to go Nippon 1150GH which is a cheaper option that I can get along with and comes in at a respectable....

$435 + [(25-10)*(7)] = $540

Or just take my chances on a KBS Tour shaft pull off ebay. Those seem to range about $30/club with shipping. The best case would be if I just got along with the Score LT shaft.

KBS are expensive so there is that. The Score LT is a fantastic shaft if you need a regular or stiff flex shaft. Especially if you need help getting the ball in the air. The KBS Tour is a medium/high launch shaft so that should be good for you. What's the worst that happens? You don't like them and put the KBS pulls in. You won't be out much money and could save a couple hundred.

There is no reason KBS shafts should be anywhere near that expensive. Steel Iron shafts are ridiculously cheap to make.

I thought the same thing.  I would bet they have some price deals with club manufacturers so that their offerings appear more valuable.

I agree. When a standard KBS $-taper is $25 more per shaft than a Dynamic Gold Tour Issue something weird is going on. A standard Dynamic Gold is a third of the price of a KBS. I understand graphite shafts costing a lot but a steel shaft should never cost $70. I'm going to get fit for shafts this winter and I'm going to tell them to not bother with any KBS offerings.

I ended up getting a 6-PW set of these for well under $75 delivered. It will be super interesting to compare to my TS3 set; a "20 years of Maltby" sort of comparison.

Aren’t the FST shafts that Golfworks has in stock again similar to the KBS shafts?

Made in the same factory.

FEMCO (Far East Machinery Co) of Taiwan is the owner of FST (Femco Steel Technolgy) and KBS shafts (Kim Braly Shafts). FEMCO has been in business since 1949 and is the second-largest manufacturer of steel golf shafts in the world, behind True Temper.

Whatchu got in your cart there bud? 🤣

A subterranean rock took a giant chunk out of my 7i (currently playing with a very fashionable "rub it against the curb until smooth-ish" grind) so I have a replacement head in there, but I'm waiting to have more to order because the shipping is too much for just one item.

so is this just an updated loft DBM? just wondering if any other changes. Still have a set of DBM but just cannot hit the distances needed as I get older with the weaker lofts... and this vs the ts-4 what are the thoughts...

Overall it looks like they brought the TE and DBM much more in line with the TS3. If you compare the specs from the MPF page most of the dimensions are within a couple hundredths of an inch of the TS3.

TBH, and this is small and nitpicky, I really don't love the font choice for the club numbers on any of the new clubs. That was probably my favorite design element of the old DBM head, and it stands out a lot more with the white paint fill against the black head on the new design.

Loft and sole changes. More radius on the sole with a relieved leading edge.

Those old KE4's has an MPF of over 1000 with a 5 iron.  Should be quite playable.
