Maltby TS2

I’m so old I remember DG priced well under $10 and made in USA.

I also remember Ralph saying, “there is nothing a steel shaft can do that is worth $20”

You must be looking at another shaft? The Score shaft is not going to be $50 a shaft. It’s $13 list price right now.

Yes, I was referring to Dynamic Gold shafts that are ~$40 right now.

DG tapered was $8.60 in 2002 in the Golfsmith catalog.

In 2000, I built a set of Golfsmith Pro Forged blades, with DG S300, for around $400, 3-LW. (10 clubs)

Was originally going to build my TS4's with MID 115's, and they would have been around $900, 4-SW. (9 clubs)

If I build another set of TS4, in satin, I’ll be using DG mid 115

Dart V's in the TS4 are the most accurate irons I've ever hit. Currently using 120's, but I'm going to put 105's in my 4&5 irons over the winter.

Interesting. I wonder how these would compare to Steelfiber 95 and/or Modus 105 (both of which I was fit into).

I was trying to steer clear of this shaft price range, but might reconsider. Modus 105 would be half the price.

Accuracy is the #1 thing I'm after so I'll do some research on the Dart V for sure.

I took my set of TS4 out today to compare against my normal set of TS3. I am not sure if I was having a good iron striking day or what, but I found better consistency with the TS4s today. After some swing changes last year, my miss with the TS3 has been left. The TS4 for whatever reason doesn't miss left, or as far left, like the TS3 do for me. I'll keep using the TS4 to see if this trend continues.

A lot of guys on here are doing better with the ts4 vs ts3. I’m one of them and I’m not some player.

I cant get along with the TS3 heads at all. No matter what I do.

TS4... I'm happy with those.

Same here. I’ve said as much on here but I’ve tried 4 different shafts with the ts3 and it’s no bueno. Ts4 are unicorns.

I'll play the TS4 some more but I am kind of leaning towards that idea. I was getting a little miffed at why I was missing left so much, even on what seemed like very good strikes.

I played my 2nd round with my combo set yesterday and struck the irons decent, and my miss was consistently long. Went over the green multiple times. Need to get used to clubbing down!

Quick range session after work. 100 balls. Ramblings:

Clubs Hit:
- 9W 40.5" (1 inch short)
- TS4 6i (37")

- TS3 6i (37")
- All MPF Pro + Stiff
- Srixon ZXI5 6i (37"), Modus 120 (current gamer)

Me:

- HCP: 15? (I don't track but typically shooting 85-90 on a fairly tight/wooded 6200 yard course)

- ~85mph 7i

Spent 80% of my time on the irons. I'd hit 3-5 with each before swapping them out.

Irons:

Favourites of the day:

1. TS4
2. ZXI5
3. TS3

I thought the TS3 would be best suited for me but I could not put two good shots together with it for some reason. It also really wanted to go left on me. TS4 was the standout, just ahead of the ZXI5. Dispersion seemed to be the tightest. I like the ball-flight the best too. I would wager the better dispersion was due to the higher spin compared the ZXI5.

Despite the ZXI5 being marketed squarely as a players distance iron and having stronger lofts than the TS4, I found I was only getting an extra 5 or so yards out of the Srixon. Mishits seemed to perform equally well too. Very forgiving. I felt no less confident standing over the TS4 6i than I do with my ZXI5.

I have a shallow angle of attack and am a bit of a picker, so I'm wondering if the narrower sole/less bounce on the TS4 is what made it so agreeable for me.

In conclusion, it felt like I was throwing more darts with the TS4 without any real noticeable loss in forgiveness and/or distance compared to the Srixons. TS3 will get another chance on the sim, but it's days are looking numbered. YMMV.

Shafts

The obvious elephant in the room is the drastic difference between the Modus 120 and the ~80g graphite maltby shaft. Traditionally I have enjoyed hitting lighter graphite shafts. I felt they helped me improve my tempo and timing. This year I impulse bought the Srixons and have been playing with them exclusively for months, so I think I've adjusted to the weight even though it was out of my sweet spot. So, going from that to graphite felt super weird, I wont lie.

I'm not exactly sold on the shafts yet. They are quite a bit softer than what I was expecting. I'm wondering if I should have gone with X-Stiff. To be fair, last time I was fit I was put into 105 Modus stiff or 95g Steelfiber stiff...so both my gamers and my maltbys are outside the recommended range, and after hitting both side by side I do think a ~100g shaft would be best.

Practically speaking the difference in shafts only really presented themselves with my misses. I was turning it over more with the lighter softer graphite in the TS4/TS3, and I would leave them out to the right with the ZXI5/Modus combo.

Wood:

Didn't hit a ton of balls with it like I said. I still have to see about this one. It felt noticeably dead off the face compared to my Ping G425 7W if I'm being honest. My first few shots were terrible and came out low and hot (didn't even think that was possible with a 9 wood). Likely user error but it is cut short and after playing around with ball position I managed to find a bit of a groove and hit several nice shots in a row.

The MPF shaft in the 9W is also softer and lighter than the Ping Tour 2.0 Black (or something) that is in my 7 wood, so that took a little adjustment. I was pressed for time and didn't have a chance to play with the loft sleeve. I was turning them over a bit to the left but nothing terrible. Maybe X-Stiff here would have been the play too...

I enjoyed it but will just have to dial it in a little more. One thing I was happy about though was the distance. Part of the reason I cut this short was because I want this to sit in my 5 iron spot because I have not been getting along with my ZXI5 5 iron, mainly due to leaving it a mile right. The yardage gap between the 6 irons and short 9 wood was looking pretty perfect to my eye, so hopeful that I got that right. The bag makeup that I'm toying with is Dr, 7w, 9w, 6i-LW. That said, I am now very interested to try out a TS4 5I/MPF because I dont think I left a single 6i out to the right today.

Next Steps:

1. Get on the SIM (tomorrow morning potentially)
2. Hit off grass
3. Buy more clubs?

IMG_7698.JPG

Little update. Weekend was a bit busier than expected so no range or sim on Saturday. I played 22 holes today though.

9 Wood:

I love it. I must have been swinging like an idiot at the range the other day. Basically every shot I hit with it today came out high and straight. My playing partners (1 friend and 2 randoms) were all considering getting 9 woods by the end of the round. I pulled it frequently even where I'd typically take my 7 wood just to get some reps under the belt. I did hit two hooks with it though which I blame on the shaft. The MPF Pro Stiff is quite a bit softer than the Ping Tour 2.0 Black like I mentioned in my initial post. I can really get after it with that shaft, but with the MPF I really have to focus on making a smooth easy swing (playing partners said those shots looked effortless).

I took a couple swings with the TS4 today on course for fun, and hit some good shots again, but it wasn't a proper testing session.

I think I'll need an X-Stiff in the wood. I'm curious to try that in the irons too but honestly my gut tells me the I should just go with something a bit heavier and more stable. Which is too bad. I was really hoping those shafts would work for me because the value is so good. The older version might have been a better fit by the looks of it.

I made a post a couple of days ago about this. ZXI5 vs TS4 vs TS3. TS3 wanted to miss left the most out of all three by far.

You might want to call yo see if the older versions are in the warehouse somewhere. They were quite a bit stiffer.

The older graphics version is available on eBay from GW. I noticed there was a fairway shaft in Stiff last time I looked.

Yea I saw they relegated them to ebay. I'm up in Canada so getting them over the border is a bit pricey unfortunately. Still might end up being cheaper than going with a OEM shaft though.

If anyone is looking for a black shaft to pair with their DBM heads, I have a brand new KBS $-Taper 120 Stiff Black PVD that needs a home for a 7iron.  I ordered it from golfworks and before I received it, I tested the $-Taper at my local golf mart and I absolutely hated it.

Since I ordered it with butt and tip prep from golfworks I can't return it.  PM me if you're interested and I'll give you a decent deal just so I can recoup most of my cost.

I was just informed that the IST Fairway Woods are backordered until September. When I originally ordered an early June they told me late June to early July when they would ship. Then they told me August, just today I asked again and they told me now it’s September. Complete BS if you ask me, I’m just going to cancel the entire order now, which sucks cause I was excited to play them this year.

Based on what I saw somewhere else, it looks like they may have paused production when 150% tariffs were announced, which may have caused the delay. This is what happened with the TS3.5
