How do you keep score/mark your card?

Recommended Posts

Out of curiosity, how do you guys mark your card?

Personally, when I'm out and not in tournament play, I keep a pretty simple scorecard (non orthodox)

I mark 0 for par, 1 for bogey, 2 for double bogey, -1 for birdie, etc. It makes the math a lot easier when totaling (just add the sum of the card plus 36 or whatever the par was for the 9) Yeah it's lazy but I find math difficult after being mentally drained for 4-5 hours.

I have debated on counting putts and fairways hit but haven't yet come across anything that I like that still keeps the card tidy.

What do you include on the card and what does it look like?

I do FIR, GIR, Putts for myself on really nice courses that I don’t get to play often. Rounds with friends around towns, I’m not the one keeping score, but my friends always do +1 or -1. Couple 9 holes courses I play I don’t even take scorecard I just do math after each holes.

I used to keep all the stats, now it's just penalties and >2 putts. Other than that 0s, 1s and hopefully some -1s.

I quit keeping stats after couple years, because it validated what I already knew...if short game is on, score is lower :golfer:

I write the hole scores on the card, not really anything else. If it's a birdie I circle the number. I usually don't add up the scores until the end of the round, though I know in my head about how I'm doing vs. par. For some reason if I start a streak of bad holes, I'll wait to write them on the card until I rebound with a good hole.

If I'm not in comp I just use my Garmin. Most times I don't even bother enabling the scoring feature (ie;Stableford or entering my hcp) because both of those mean it doesn't show the gross score which annoys me. In a comp I just fill in both columns with strokes taken.

I don't keep long-term stats and so I'm not concerned with writing down my score. I can always remember what I did during my last round pretty much shot for shot.

I have to admit, I now get really annoyed thogh when someone asks to keep my score and writes down 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's, etc. and then adds up all 18 numbers instead of just doing the stroke(s) above/below par or even keeping a running total.

I feel like it's the equivalent of someone who types a full question into Google.

I just write the score for the hole like normal. The only slightly odd thing I do is circling pars, rather than circling birdies. I hold myself to the 'bogey golf' standard, so a bogey is basically a par for me. Pars get a circle, birdies get circled a buncha times, eagles (the two I've ever had) get a star. I don't box bogey or worse; I don't need that negativity in my life haha.

I tend to keep track of skins, too. Idk if my way of scoring skins is normal or not, but I just put the initials of the player who won the skin in the box at the bottom of the card for that hole. Pushes get a dash. When a player gets more than one skin on a hole, I put their initials and the number of skins in the box.

I guess it depends how close to par you shoot. If you're consistently over par on most holes, calculating the difference from par after the fact could take as long as just adding the numbers straight through. It also adds the risk of getting the math wrong on a hole you might mistake as a par 4 that was really a par 5, or something like that, if you look at the wrong spot on the card. I usually add up the numbers through 7 holes, let the group know where they're at to finish the front/back 9 (if they want to know), then I can quickly figure out the in/out total as we head into the clubhouse because I just have to tack on the last two holes. There's usually plenty of time to add up the scores of a foursome while waiting at the teebox.

When playing for recreation... Just keep to par in my head -- sometimes if I'm on a course I have not played before I will keep a scorecard -- in which I circle birdies, leave pars alone, and squares around bogeys. 2 squares for double, 2 circles for the rare eagle. In tournament or league play I write just the score with no additional markings.

Haha....I feel ya brother, but no....it doesn't matter what you shoot.

65 or 95, it's always going to be simpler to add up smaller numbers--especially if many of them are 0's (pars)! ;)

Just try it for a few weeks and you won't go back.

I was wondering how those who keep so many stats in the scorecard can also focus on playing such a demanding game like golf.

This 100%!

If for whatever reason I want to record my rounds, I have an Excel spreadsheet where I will input the information after-the-fact by just replaying the round in my head.

Is it really that hard to remember what you did on each hole?
