How do you keep score/mark your card?

I write the score, just like I would in a competition round. Same for my entire group, if I'm taking that job on that day. And keep track of my bets. As for addition, I was raised in the pre-electronic sage, I can add 9 numbers in less than 5 seconds, its just not that difficult.

not if you use common core

LOL, of course not, I feel bad for children who learn things the "modern" way. In 1962, when I was learning to add, we had to learn to actually add. And if we failed, we actually failed. I learned. And I don't even have to take off my socks to get to 20!

I was wondering how those who keep so many stats in the scorecard can also focus on playing such a demanding game like golf.

This 100%!

If for whatever reason I want to record my rounds, I have an Excel spreadsheet where I will input the information after-the-fact by just replaying the round in my head.

Is it really that hard to remember what you did on each hole?

Except for the dreaded other... when you actually have to think. Otherwise it's always -1, +1, etc... it's not that hard.

Depends on what I am playing that day. If I am playing with other people I keep score just as if I am playing a competitive round with circles and squares around the numbers. If I am playing/practicing which I do a lot of, I keep score normally, with a running total of under/over par underneath. Then I use the remaining rows to record FIR, GIR, Chips, and Putts.

Ah yes — 1962 — the golden era of education. No one before or after will understand the fortitude it took to get through the rigors of learning arithmetic as they were taught in 1962.

I'm working on an app that will more easily allow people to statistically determine the quality of their ballstriking and their putts gained.

On my scorecard I basically just track how long the length of my first putt was (rough approximation).

I may keep score on my scorecard, but usually when I'm playing casual rounds I know my score in my head. If I'm playing with others and they want to keep score, I will keep everybody's score and the length of my first putt.

After the round, the other metrics are easy to remember to keep. I record them in my spreadsheet and they are (by hole):

Score vs. Par

Hit Fwy

Hit GIR

# of Putts

Approximate length of 1st putt (taken from the scorecard)

Any shot that went in the water

Any shot that went OB or lost ball

15/5 Score for the hole

By the end of the round the 15/5 score on the spreadsheet gives me an equivalency on how well I struck the ball for the round and the spreadsheet populates my putts gained for the round.

I just started doing this with good luck. It was a little cumbersome figuring out how to get a measurement of the 1st putt length, but I've found that you really only need it for putts outside 5-feet (unless you 2 or 3 putt from inside 5-feet). The idea is to then take the data after 10 rounds at my club and analyze how I play each hole and then work on specific shots on each hole. And then when I get more rounds in on other golf courses, see how well I perform on par-4's, par-5's and par-3's...particularly different length par-4's, par-5's and par-3's.

I've been a computer programmer for 30 years. Damned if I'm wasting my brain on arithmetic, let the blasted machines do it :)

I keep score as a way to finalize a hole in my mind, then move on to the next challenge. If I'm not practicing or taking lessons, I just write down the score per hole then toss the card after I enter it into my handicap site (VSGA).

If I am practicing and taking lessons, then it is smart for me to track my progress on the course. So, I'll count GIR (especially if I have a new driver or fairway wood) and any other stat relative to what I am practicing to improve. Putting is so hot and cold, I don't keep count of strokes anymore...maybe if I change putters.

If I am keeping score for someone else, that's is all I do. Strokes per hole, not GIR or putts or chunks. He/she can do any other secretarial work they need.

Bumping this for us Fall golfers. The topic is of interest because I'm a stat junkie and track a ton of info on the scorecard: FIR, direction/shape of tee shot, Fairway Points (more on that in a moment), approach length, GIR, up & down, sand saves, 1st putt length and miss reason (low, short, etc), made putt length, putts per hole, 3-putts and penalties. Most of those stats go into spreadsheets after each round so I can analyze. Before anyone suggests it, I've considered tools like Arccos but haven't justified the expense. I like my Google Sheets.

RE Fairway Points, I found a system years ago to track missed fairways and assign point values to them to determine the impact on scoring. Divide the total points in the round by half and it gives you a pretty good idea of how many shots you cost yourself by missing fairways. I find it valuable because I generally don't mind missing fairways by a few yards as long as the rough isn't overly penal. Scoring is as follows:

0 points = light rough (no impact on approach shot)

1 point = heavy rough (affects ability to hit good approach shot)

2 points = blocked out from a clear approach shot (i.e. behind a tree)

3 points = drop shot (i.e. hazard or unplayable)

4 points = OB / re-hit from tee

So, over my last 20 rounds, I average 5.6 FIR (40%) and 9.3 fairway points (which is worth about 4.7 strokes per round). That means my current 86.7 gross scoring average could be as low as 82 if I cleaned up my driving and didn't miss fairways quite as bad.

I keep my score on the hole, Y/N for fairway hit along with an arrow to indicate the direction of the miss, Y/N for GIR and a small arrow to indicate direction of miss, # of pitches, # of chips, # of putts, # sand with Y/N to indicate save, indicate any penalty shots (OB, hazard, lost ball, etc).

I also include the my running score in relation to par if there's room. The only reason I keep the actual score on the holes is for handicap purposes to make sure I enter the correct ESC for those occasional blow up holes worse than double bogey.

Score - FIR - GIR - putts, but I don't keep those stats for the typical reasons.

I use a "modified" version of FIR and GIR - closely mown areas next to the fairway or green still count. I don't think FIR and GIR are very useful as real stats, but they're easy to track and I only use them as a mental reminder as I review a round in my head for what I did "well" and what I didn't do so well.

# of putts, is a terrible stat, overall, but again, I keep it because it's easy and can use it as a cue for what happened on a particular green.
