Raingear For Late November Bandon Trip

eboettne

Recommended Posts

So there are probably many threads about raingear to buy for Bandon Dunes but I will add another. I will be taking my first trip at the end of November so of course I'll plan for cold, rainy, and windy. This being said, I'd like some options for raingear that won't break the bank. I know I know, Galvin Green will be the last rainsuit you ever buy but I can count on one hand how many times I've worn rain gear in the last 5 years I've played so I feel like having a $600 rainsuit sit around my house(besides this trip) isn't quite worth it. However, I do still play in colder weather on occasion when it's early season up here.

In summation, I'd like a jacket that's under $200 that is waterproof(preferably goretex) but also keeps you fairly warm as I know that 740am tee time at Old Mac could be chill in late November. Any brands or websites that have deals would be greatly appreciated!

So here's my Lesson Learned About Bandon Rain Gear story:

A few years back I bought a rain suit for a trip to Bandon. It was a nice Mizuno waterproof suit, and I tested it out in a couple good showers here in PDX and it performed flawlessly.

Fast forward to Bandon in February. One morning of rain showers, suit works fine. Next day, it is a biblical monsoon. High winds and constant heavy rain. The rain suit worked admirably (nothing will keep you 100% dry in those conditions) through 12 holes. Then the fabric got completely overwhelmed and the next 6 holes were the most miserable of my life.

After returning the suit to the place I got it, I did the research I should have done beforehand and learned that non-GoreTex fabrics are essentially rated for waterproofness - not in the sense of whether they are or not, but according to how much water they can take before they are overwhelmed and fail.

I was finally able to justify buying a GoreTex jacket and pants, even though I only wear them at Bandon when the weather is really bad. I go at least once a year, so having that confidence that I can face anything the weather throws at me is huge. I have a lined Zero Restriction GoreTex jacket and pants, which paired with a good base layer is more than warm enough, even for winter play. As you know, GoreTex can be really spendy.

If you are not going to be playing in 40 F. temps, you can get by with a much cheaper unlined GoreTex jacket. I also have an unlined ZR GoreTex jacket for warmer temps, and that is the one I end up using most of the time, with appropriate layering. I got it a few years ago when GolfSmith had their end of winter sale, and I think I paid $150 for it. Deals are out there - RockBottom, TGW, eBay and the usual places for discount golf goods are the places to look.

That jacket is the top end with a a pair of REI waterproof hiking pants, which are very lightweight and easy on/off. If it's a bit chilly, you can wear a pair of jogging pants or lycra underneath for an insulating layer. I think I paid $60 for those.

More of an issue for me is what to do for my hands in cold wet weather, but that's a different thread...

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

Gore-tex is about the only fabric that will keep you dry. I purchased a Galvin Green Achilles jacket this past winter. I have been wanting one for a long time, but balked at spending that much. My patience paid off and I picked one up at 50% off. I also picked up a ProQuip PX5 StormForce Trousers at a great bargain.

I have a FootJoy DryJoy Tour XP, and it is in no way, shape or form waterproof. Same with the trousers.

I agree with the Gore-Tex sentiment. That said, you could probably get away with non-Gore-Tex pants, as most of the rain will run off. I've been a big fan of Sunice goretex products, and you're usually able to find them on closeout. I've never paid full price for any rain gear and have been completely happy with the design and quality.

I will say, I have a goretex jacket with zip off sleeves. That's been a waste, as water gets into the seams when I swing, so I definitely recommend against one of those for heavy/sustained rain.

Just get a normal Goretex jacket and use layers to keep you warm if necessary. You'll be walking so you'll keep warm that way, no need to overdo it with a heavy waterproof jacket IMO. Also, I believe the oceanic climate keeps temps from swinging too low in the winter. When I went in early November last year it was 50s and 60s all day and not really cold in the morning.

It's okay in a light drizzle, but anything heavier, and for a long period of time, and you will get wet. The downside with Gore-Tex is the cost, but if you are patient and persistent you can always find something on sale. I don't mind playing in the rain, but I do mind getting wet. lol

ProQuip PX5 StormForce jacket and pants worked great for me in February this year. We had 10 consecutive holes of VERY hard rain the entire trip and the ProQuip gear kept me completely dry. I was hesitant to pull the trigger on nice rain gear and spend a fortune as well, however those 10 holes that it rained we worth every penny I spent.

Now with that said, I still went bargain hunting for awhile before I made a purchase. After lots of research and website hunting I came across golfsupport.com - They are based in the UK but ship to the US. They have a great selection of options and at a discounted rate. I just checked the same PX5 jacket and pants and from what I can tell they are at the same price I purchased (links below). Also, they ship quick too! If memory serves me correctly, I purchased on a Tuesday and had my gear delivered by Friday.

Another note, know your size ahead of time because if you need to return anything you have to pay the shipping cost and shipping from US to UK will cost you big time. I had bought a few more items after my initial purchase because I had a good experience but one of those items didnt fit so i inquired about a return which they were quick to respond to. Then I looked into my various options to ship it back and the cost of shipping was like 2x-3x of the cost of what I paid for the item.

If you do the bundle jacket @ $195 and pants they knock the price of the pants down to $108.99 (see the link for that on the Jacket link)

If you order direct from ProQuip here are those prices:

Jacket - $380

Pants - $280

I purchased my jacket from a UK company called Golfposer. Great customer service, and they answered a lot of questions I had, especially relating to size. Normally I wear XL, but in the GG Achilles jacket they recommended XXL, and I am glad they did. I paid $289 US for the jacket.

The ProQuip StormForce PX5 trousers I picked up for $114 from another UK company. Can't remember the name though.

I purchased both late last December.

This looks like a good option. Basically the price I'm looking to pay but quality products. Now just have to 100% make sure that they're the right sizes so I may have to call as I've never seen ProQuip stuff around my area to try on before ordering. Thanks for the tip!

The proquip px5 is very well reviewed and has a lifetime waterproof warranty. I have a friend that has one and has went on a trip to scotland and it worked perfect for him.

As stated above, golf support is a good place to buy because of the bundle deal

Also, if you go to the "golf style and accessories" subforum and search proquip you should be able to get some information about the fit from the previous rain gear threads there as well as other rain gear brands. There are many that feel it stretches better and breathes more than GG/goretex, but i can't really comment on that personally

I have tried on the proquip tourlite rain jacket before and it was very comfy and stretchy, but if i were buying i would get the px5 or goretex due to lifetime warranty (and after spending many hours reading rain gear threads probably the proquip due to the performance/price combo)

Can not echo this enough on all levels. I have a GG rain suit that I got from Golf Poser, waited and got year old stuff on sale for a little over $400. Best golf purchase I have made.

Also, i’ve been down there over 10x and all but 1 were from Oct - Apr with most in Feb. My wife used to work at Nike and I basically wasn’t allowed to wear anything else and got my stuff for cheap to free. Every round I played I would inevitably end up wet with the culmination being 3 yrs ago on a day with 2” of rain (that is a LOT for down there) and 30+ mph winds. I was wet by the 6th hole and miserable the rest of the round. Went home and spent the money that weekend.

This year we played Sheep Ranch on basically the same day, over an inch and a half of rain and 20+ mph winds. Now Sheep Ranch doesn’t have bathrooms or comfort stations. I could not have been dryer, played over 30 holes of golf and smiled the whole time.

Now I only use my GG gear for Bandon but it’s real nice knowing it’s there.

Just an update on this thread, decided to do a little ebay shopping. Bought a FJ jacket for $18, as expected the DWR had worn off but was worth a shot at that price and is a nice jacket for cold mornings without rain. Then just received a zero restriction goretex travelers jacket that I won for $50 on an ebay auction. Seemes too good to be true but this thing is legit. Sleeves seem a little puffier than the footjoy but quality of the jacket is great. Although I think it's a few years old model, water beads right off it as it's supposed to. Thanks again to everyone here that replied and/or sent messages. Learned a ton and was able to save hundreds of dollars as a result.

Look no further and follow this advice. I got the same deal several months ago, top of the line ProQuip rain suit. This site is the real deal and the Pro Quip gear at that price is the best deal on rain gear on the internet. Email them to verify their sizes to what fits you. They are very responsive.

Honestly, unless they don't let us on the courses we'll be playing so fingers crossed that we don't get any course closing type monsoon rain. Have 3.5 days to play as much Bandon Dunes golf as possible and we will definitely be taking advantage of every minute.

I've seen some pretty epic rain there and never not been allowed out due to precipitation. I've played Old Mac a couple times where there are streams running across the greens. So if you're hardcore enough, you'll get to play. The only time I've seen the courses closed for play is frost delays.

They will let you out...but the worst I saw was about 65mph winds with torrential rains...no way playing that is more fun than drinking scotch in the hot tub....but to each their own. I played in a lot of Rain and wind living on the oregon coast, but there is a point where it just becomes to much. I will hope that you do not experience a pacific hurricane and that you get 3.5 days of heaven on earth as that place is capable of being. I love bandon, probably have over 100 rounds on the tracks there, enjoy your trip!

Only reasons they will close the courses are frost or lightning. The rest is up to you.

Granted, anything above 30 mph or so and you're playing a different game. That's about the point where the wind starts affecting 1) your ball on the greens and 2) your swing plane and you start hitting shots like you've never picked up a club before.

It's usually at that point where I start playing old balls and throw away the scorecard.

They actually closed Bandon for at least a few hours a couple Novembers ago due a rain storm and the amount of rain that was collecting everywhere. On the back 9 is was just silly.

We were 'fortunate' enough to have been out early so they didn't bring us in, but they stopped other groups from going out.

We assumed it was a case of no one being that foolish, but found out after we were done.

Is it weird I kinda wish I coulda seen that? Given how bad it’s been raining and blowing and I’ve still seen people go out to play (myself included) I’m curious what actually stops play.

Apologies to the OP for taking this off topic—but what are the opinions of taking umbrellas to Bandon?

Me and the guys head over in about 6 weeks...and I’m getting questions about bringing umbrellas. I’m under the assumption that when it rains, it’s windy, making the umbrellas moot and a waste of time.

Or am I wrong, and they could provide some value?
