Raingear For Late November Bandon Trip

Apologies to the OP for taking this off topic—but what are the opinions of taking umbrellas to Bandon?

 

Me and the guys head over in about 6 weeks...and I’m getting questions about bringing umbrellas. I’m under the assumption that when it rains, it’s windy, making the umbrellas moot and a waste of time.

 

Or am I wrong, and they could provide some value?

 

I can't see any value in an umbrella. GoreTex Jacket + GoreTexPants + one of these bad boys:

Agreed. The best value of an umbrella is for walking around after golf.

Unless you have a caddie - during the round all that faffing around is too much of a PITA IMHO.

 

Whether you go with the bucket or a typical cap style, the waterproof hats are great. I always wear one on days it might rain.

Seriously. There will be one guy out there that you'll see with an umbrella. He will chase it across a couple fairways for a couple holes, then give up and put it away. Then get soaked because he was relying on that to be his main water protection. This is the guy that they have in mind when they set the high prices for rain gear in the pro shop. He will gladly pay $350 for a Sunice jacket after his round.

I have bought all my rain gear ahead of time besides this hat as I figured it would be cool to have the Bandon Dunes logo on it. Will these pretty much be guaranteed to be in stock in the pro shops or am I risking it by not having another waterproof bucket hat of my own?

They have enough of these hats (with logos from all the courses) to cover the heads of everyone in the state of North Dakota.

If you're worried about supply, order it from the Bandon website ahead of time. Order yardage books while you're at it to have something to drool over in anticipation. They might have "Dream Golf" on the website too.

The traditional bucket hats are worthless in the rain when the wind is blowing. A couple of years ago Bandon started stocking bucket hats with a larger bill, a stiffener in the bill and a chin strap. They are much better, especially for us guys who wear glasses.

Take them. You just may not use them. If it is windy then skip it... More trouble than they are worth. If the rain is falling relatively vertical then they are a big help.

Take them. You just may not use them. If it is windy then skip it... More trouble than they are worth. If the rain is falling relatively vertical then they are a big help.

 

Respectfully disagree. Unless you're driving in and have plenty of space in the car for umbrellas, not worth packing. Save space/weight if flying. In 5 trips, around 3 dozen rounds, and seeing hundreds of golfers, I don't think I've seen anyone actually using an umbrella. Those times when the rain is falling vertically (not often) can be handled easily by a good bucket hat.

That is a fine point...I lived on the Oregon coast for 9 years and played year round. I also have about 60+ rounds at Bandon so I am speaking from experience here. If weight and room in your bag is a problem then leave them home. It is certainly optional and situational, but since I was typically driving there with plenty of room in the car it was always a good idea to take them. Sure the bucket hat keeps you dry, but an umbrella over your bag keeps your grips dry and that is where it can be really handy when it is practical. I often used a speedcart with an umbrella for that purpose.

 

Bandon is such a situational vacation that you don't need a lot. Golf clothes, bottles of scotch, clubs/balls, raingear and a swimsuit for the tub is about it really.

I’ve been 12 times I believe, never taken an umbrella and never will. One guy in our group took one last year, it lasted 3 holes. The wind on #3 got ahold of his clic gear and overpowered the brake and he had to chase it 300 yards back down the fairway.

Whst are you all wearing for shors in the rain? Ill assume Bandon drains very well so It might not get roo sloppy?

Even when there is some puddles forming, it's never sloppy.

 

I have a variety of footwear that I take. Nike FI Impact (waterproof) or Bermuda (not) if it's warm-ish, Adidas Puremotion (waterproof) if it's cooler, and a pair of Adidas Climaproof BOA for the monsoons

as for umbrellas, agree with Mallrat.

 

Since 2001 I've played more than 60 rounds at Bandon. Always used a light carry bag (without a push cart). Found trying to fiddle with an umbrella, grabbing a club, & fighting the wind was too much. Just threw a raincover over my bag.

 

Once saw a fellow with a pushcart & umbrella in the wind + rain. Into the wind the umbrella acted as a sea anchor, slowing him to the point where he was barely moving. Downwind the umbrella was like a sail, pushing the cart along fast or knocking it over.

I've seen the Bandon wind do that to ClicGear carts even without an umbrella - even when they were laid down by the green...
