Earl Woods: "My son will win 14 majors..."

15th Club

If a crazy guy says enough crazy things, he'll be right at least once in a while...

Earl may have been a lot of things. Crazy wasn’t one of them. He raised a champion. Crazy folks can’t comprehend that process.

This. Successful people get called crazy all the time. The absolute attention to detail, patience and commitment retired to train greatness just wouldn't be possible with a loon. You only have to scratch the surface to find out how far above and beyond they're able and willing to go.

Exactly. Most people think “ fight or flight “ inside legal boundaries. But some know of that third option.

Tiger needs for The Simpsons to predict he beats Jack's record next. They have been right about a lot of things over the same course of time.

If you would have told me in 1995 tiger would have 14 majors, I wouldn't have believed it. If you would have told me in 2008 that Tiger would still have 14 majors, I wouldn't have believed it.

Thats golf in a nutshell. All careers have best before/ expiry dates. Honestly after the us ams and augusta i thought hed get to 10 easy so 14 is a bonus.

Sorry if anybody else has made much of a big deal about this previously, but this little factoid is rather remarkable. I found it while looking up something else about Tiger at Carnoustie this week...

In 1995, Earl Woods is celebrating his son Tiger's match play victory over Buddy Marucci at Newport CC to win his second (of three) consecutive US Am championships. A Sports Illustrated reporter is nearby, and gets this quote from Earl: "I'm going to make a prediction... Before he is through, my son will win 14 majors." That was in 1995. Tiger was still an amateur, and he was 19 years old. He was not even finished playing in the Am; he would play it again a year later. No one knew when exactly he might turn to professional status.

Tiger Woods has won 14 majors.

I'm not quite sure which is more remarkable; that Earl Woods seems to have called it to the exact number at a time when such a wager would be a 2 million-to-1 shot, or if it is even more remarkable that Earl Woods (who was sometimes prone to such things) wasn't then claiming that Tiger would win 20 or more majors, eclipsing Nicklaus.

2 million to one shot Gracie ? :swoon:

Hyperbole much ?

Otherwise cdnglf has it right. You know, time,,,,,,,,,,, monkeys,,,,,,,, typewriters,,,,,,,, Constitution,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Glad someone pointed this out.

There is absolutely nothing remarkable about guessing a random number between 0 and, let's say, 20.

Exactly. I was flabbergasted by the OP but since the thread had already gained into the second page I was sure I wouldn't be the first to isolate that 2 million to 1 nonsense.

But it reminds me of the advantages I had when I moved to Las Vegas in 1984. It was still primitive in the sportsbook scene and the books did not communicate with each other. Sometimes you would have guys with opinions behind the counter who would throw up their own lines out of nowhere. It wouldn't be a brutal as 2 million to 1, but it wouldn't resemble reality either.

For example, that spring only two joints were booking hockey totals -- Gary Austin's and Sam's Town. I walked into the Dunes before the playoffs and they put up the first day's lines, but no totals. I knew this guy had an attitude so I asked him about totals. "You want totals? You'll have totals. Just give me a few minutes."

True to his word, he posted totals within 15 minutes. And every one of them was bizarre. He was 2 goals too high on every game, except one game where he was 1.5 goals too high. He was putting up 8.5 when Austin's was using 6.5. I composed myself before playing them all under, and multiple pops on each. Then I played some middles but mostly let the unders ride. The only one I lost was the Gretzky/Oilers game. I hit one middle, on the Canucks game.

And I gained my first nickname in town, "The Undertaker"

I mention this only because it demonstrates how difficult the newcomers to Las Vegas have it now. I feel sorry for them. Few if any mistakes. You actually have to pick winners. And the joints are now satellites with only perhaps 10-12 independent numbers in town, instead of freewheeling joints each with their own numbers, own set of employees, and totally clueless what the guy next door was doing.

I wonder if the Dunes had Big Cat projected at 20 majors in 1995.

I wish Earl would have clocked Feinstein at Augusta by the tree.

Read a lot on that last night. Feinstein really thinks highly of himself doesn’t he ? What a tool.

It consistently amazes me how many people gamble and don't seem know what's going on - thinking the oddsmakers "don't know what they're doing" or "are wrong so often".

"He" was NOT 2 goals or 1.5 goals "too high". Likelihood is he was spot on.

They are STOCKBROKERS. They don't care which side wins. They only care that they get their "commissions".

Earl Woods was not crazy??

It’s a thought process that is different from any that 99.5%+ have ever experienced however different does not equate to crazy and the man was faaaaaar from crazy, lol

Great post Bro?

I hope that you and the fam are having a great year and you’re bombin em??‍♂️

That is actually amazing. What a random number too

Those into Hypnosis/ NLP/ the subconscious mind etc may well suggest thats exactly why he did win 14 majors.

I want him to win tomorrow but I don't think he will.

Agreed wholeheartedly with your statement and also that I don’t think he’ll get it done tomorrow cuz there’s too much ground and recent history shows that they all ain’t goin backwards even if Tiger goes low.

That being said, I do believe that if he stays healthy, he’s got at least one more in him.

Have a nice weekend?

Now we know why he hasn't chosen to win another one. Respect for Earlders.

I agree(?) and may just start a thread/poll about this and get the guys’ opinions?

Have a great week?
