Trade deadline in less than 6 hours. What's everyone hoping for their team to do?

As a KC fan, we obviously need S or CB help, hell even an ILB or two. Missed out on Earl Thomas getting hurt. Everyone seems to think we aren't in the market to do anything but Veach has been fairly aggressive and if they could make the money work for Thomas we could afford plenty of other guys. Hoping for the best.

Reports that Jordy Nelson may be retiring mid season (like any day) plus Martavius Bryant got hurt. So in 2017 Oakland had Cooper and Crabtree. Let Crabtree go, get Jordy. Then they bring in Bryant. Then trade away Cooper, Bryant gets hurt and Jordy retires. Now their starting WRs may be Seth Roberts and Dwayne Harris. Ouch.

And I doubt they care at all. Gunning for the #1 pick

apparently they had issues with khalil mack's agent and cooper shares the same agent. If they don't plan to keep cooper then by all means get a first round draft pick for it.

not a fan of what he's doing but it's easy for us to say he's crazy. he's hoping the master plan works in getting a max deal (his agent better hope too). someone will pay him and i think we've seen him play his last game in Pitt.

from a fantasy perspective - thank god i didn't take this guy.

Tough to see how the master plan will work out.

He basically gave up $14.5M to avoid injury (while still doing dumb stuff like riding a jet ski) - that's hella expensive insurance, even for a RB.

I think the Steelers called his bluff and he lost.

It's a very simple explanation of making that money back. He sits out, loses $14.5M, then in the offseason signs a $70M deal. If he plays, he makes only $14.5M and risks blowing a knee out. If he does get injured, he's going to lose much more than the $14.5M with his next contract. He's not going to get what he thinks he's worth, but he's still going to get a huge contract and will likely get more guaranteed money than PIT was willing to give him.

I think he's a tool for the way he's handled everything, but I can't necessarily fault him for what he did. He removed the risk that a 1 year deal could ruin the chances of him getting a 5 year deal. I'm sure it made up his mind when Earl Thomas decided to stop his hold out, decided to play, broke his leg, and now goes into free agency as somewhat damaged goods with an unknown future.

He might sign a 5 year deal, but he won't get 5 years of guaranteed money.

Pretty sure the most guaranteed money a RB has received by far is Gurley, at ~$45M. Bell is a great player, but I doubt he'll get close to that much - he's older, has had some availability issues (injury/suspension), and now he's going to go 20 months without playing a game.

If he'd played this year, he could skipped training camp, still showed up in time to pocket the $14.5M, and probably still got a big contract next year. As a hedge, he could have insured himself for far less than $14.5M.

Don't get me wrong, Bell's biggest issue is that he thinks he's worth more than he really is, so some logic can get thrown right out the door. We'll never know if it made sense or not because we'll never know whether he might have gotten injured had he played this year. Insurance is an interesting point as you assume he would have it regardless. I think he would have reported and played the end of the season until someone realized that the cap number didn't revert back and he was looking at like $25M. At that point, he had already given up half of the money, may have just decided it was worth it to miss out on the rest, knowing he had already burned all his bridges in the meantime.

Not sure what you mean by max. Unlike the NBA and NHL, there is no such thing as a max contract in the NFL CBA.

He'll make a lot of money for a RB. Maybe even be the second highest-paid at that position. But RB make less than almost every other position, and way less than QBs.

I don't fault him for trying to maximize his career earnings. I just don't see how that can happen now that he's forfeited a year of his prime and $14.5M.

He may swap a 14.5m he never really had and turn it into a 30-45m direct deposit, and that is worth it to him to play this situation this way. It sounds silly to us, but its different for these dudes. Could have got that 14.5 and it be the last NFL dollar he ever made due to a career ending injury, then hed miss out on the mega follow on deal.

he's actually protecting himself from making just 14.5m

an acl tear and we know the guarantee dollar won't be there next year. Even at a transition tag, teams with super high cap space will give him a poison pill of front loaded money that steelers can't match.

he'll walk away with 35-40m guarantee and who cares what the remaining balance is.

Of course he could have suffered a career-ending injury had he played. That also could have happened riding the jetski. Or walking down a set of stairs.

Some things are more likely than others, and suffering a career-ending injury while playing this year is less likely than not.

He threw away the best case scenario (plays this year at $14.5M _and_ signs a big deal after this season). He could have insured himself against the worst case scenario for much less than $14.5M (plays this year at $14.5M and suffers a career-ending injury).

But instead, he got zero this year - all to protect a guaranteed contract for the next 2-3 years.

That guarantee will be for more than $14.5M - but probably not way more. From what I've read, Gurley got a $22M absolute guarantee. (There's another $20M in "guarantees" over the next couple of years, but it doesn't seem like those would be protected from a career-ending injury in 2018).

Bell is a pretty high volume back, the injury risk with him is more than normal Id say. But still, 14.5<20-45 and he felt it was worthwhile to pass up the short term pay off and go for the long term deal. This isnt all to uncommon.

Gurley was the exception, and a known hometown commodity. Bell's value has dropped since the explosion of Conner behind the exact same line putting up the exact same numbers.

Last year he was considered an exceptional talent, I think teams will have to rethink if it was the person or the system/ team.

He will still get a boatload of money, but I don't think he is going to break the bank this off-season like he originally thought he would. I suspect he will get signed to a contract putting him with the better paid backs, but not in the stratosphere with Gurley.
