Golfworks / Golf mechanix tools

Jpapa

Recommended Posts

Finally biting the bullet and starting the build for my club building studio.

I have been doing enough research, and think im sold on Golf mechanix/ golf works set up.

I'm doing a rather large first order to get enough gear to get the ball rolling, mainly just re-grip, re-shaft type things at the moment. Loft adjustment will come later once i can find a decent machine locally.

Has anyone got a promo code to help soften the blow a little? The shipping alone is killer, plus the new tax laws we have had to swallow in AUS.

And any must haves or avoid at all costs advice from some of the experienced guys?

Golfworks runs promos fairly often for 20% off select tools and they run shipping specials as well (no idea how that would apply to AUS though). Just join their email list and you'll be in the loop.

You’re way better off ordering their tools from golfworks as you don’t get charged customs duties as you would from golf mechanix. They really don’t put the gm tools on sale on golfworks. So you’re best bet is to wait for their shipping promos which come out every month and half or so and at least wait for that. Last year they did a promo for the gm website through golf spy so I ordered thru there and then got a bill like a month later for 100 dollars for import duties. Honestly the golf mechanix stuff is mainly such great quality it’s well worth paying full price. I’d highly recommend getting a loft lie gauge. I haven’t tried their shaft pullers but I have a Roberts one and I absolutely love it. I think hydraulic is the way to go. I have a universal loft lie machine shipping to me now and i can’t wait to get it so I can bend my wishon woods and also set it up for different clubs so the hosel is upright making it way easier to bend. My Mitchell is about to go on craigslist if you’re near the New England area? I also bought the dust contained shaft cutter but I’m not 100 percent sure that was worth it.

We are talking about shipping to Aus though.

See if Golf Mechanix uses a freight forwarder at all. If they do, this might be the way to go. When I worked in another business, using a freight forwarder in shipping to Australia was far less expensive than shipping via FedEx or UPS.

I also do this when I buy tools from Golfworks, costs about half as much in freight from USA.

Golfmechanix ship direct from Taiwan to Australia for a little bit better again.

Thanks so far guys!

It looks like ill go down the golf mechanix path for the tool set up, but supplies might be a golfworks thing.

Signed up for the emails to see if i can score a bit of discount on the order.

Just missed a local Golf mechanix Loft machine the other day! Sold in under 30 mins on the local FB page.....

sort of new to using these forums but wanted to know if you still felt the same about this shaft cutter from Golf Mechanix? I’d like to hear how it’s been for you if you still have it.

I never had one, but unless you are doing this for a living (cutting dozens or 100's of shafts a day), this would be overkill.  For decades I've just used a cutoff wheel on a grinder arbor and it's fine.  Every once in a while I sweep up the dust.  If I was really doing a lot of stuff, I would hook up a shop-vac hose and turn that on when I was cutting.

It's a pretty sweet machine.  It does make shaft cutting easier and straighter.  I have a cut off saw but I go to the shaft cutter every time.  I wish i could say I was better about using the dust containment feature but I'm not.

A $8 cut off blade attached to a common 6" bench grinder makes short work of cutting shafts.  As a bonus, a grinder wheel is 100x more useful than a cutoff specific tool.

Use a wrap of masking tape around the shaft, to mark the cutting edge.  Cut the shaft slightly above the mark, then use the grinding wheel on the other side of the grinder to dress down the cut, and make it nice and even.

My grinder is used quite often in the shop, and I don't keep the cut off blade installed very often.  If I'm feeling lazy, which is fairly often these days, instead of installing the cut off blade, I just use the corner of a regular grinding wheel to cut the shafts.  Then, repeating myself, dress the cut down to your masking tape edge.  It couldn't be more easy.  Just don't stick you face down into the dust generated.

Here's another alternative from Golf Mechanix:

https://www.golfworks.com/the-golfworks-1-x-30-shaft-cutter-ferrule-turning-machine-gw1120/p/gw1120/

This has been one of the best tools I've owned. The shaft clamp ensures a square cut every time and has a ruler for convenience. On the other end the belt is really easy to change and the adjustment screw at the top makes aligning it fool-proof. The ferrule turning fixture works great. I use a universal shop vac adapter to attach my vac when I'm cutting or sanding.
