Recreating Tiger’s new putter

I'd buy it if they made it

TM would sell a ton if they marketed it as a TW putter.

True but would hope it was just marketed as that and doesn't have his name all over it. But a slightly more premium finish would be nice. The same finish as the black Spider would look great.

They don’t need his name all over it. Just label it as an Ardmore 3 TW model and watch it fly off the racks.

Am (and have always been) a classic blade type of putter guy. Have a moderate arc to my stroke and they work great. Never liked mallets or double-bendy shafts.

Am also an unabashed Tiger fan! Outside of his play, I have always admired his attention to detail on equipment and how he is very precise about what he plays.

And when the goat switched to the Ardmore 3, I had to check it out. I have to admit that the small, slant-neck Ardmore 3 with the moderate toe-hang feels great and suits my stroke. The only issue is that TM does not make that in black / black copper. The one that they sell in that finish is the plumber neck. The one that they sell in the right model is red.

So I picked up the right style in Red and am going to get the wonderful craftsmen at Continental Golf refinish it in black or black-copper, if they can do it. And with a Pingman grip on it, we should be pretty close.

Curious if anyone else has tried this.

Small note: if you don't like Tiger, or have issues with people liking his game, style of play, equipment, etc, I respectfully ask that you move on and spare us the negativity.

Is the insert he uses just a different color or is it a completely different material as well?

Sorry for the rapid fire responses here, but, good question point about the insert MATERIAL. Not sure and would love to know if it's the same....

Also, sorry that I repeated so much of what was already stated in the thread (Hossler using, black not copper). I was just so excited to share that I didn't read it all!

A lot of ACCURATE responses, above!!!

I do think that the insert might be different. I was at my PGA Superstore a few weeks ago just hitting different putters. The insert in the black copper putters felt much better then the one in the red TP putters. I haven't read anything that suggests there's anything different besides the color, but they definitely feel different to me. The insert in the black copper ones (red insert) feels more like metal. The black insert feels more plastic like.

They're the same Aluminum insert.

Not sure what made me think of this, but is the DJ Spider the only one with the surlyn insert?

Totally agree that TM should capitalize NOW... The amount of tweaks necessary to make this mirror Tiger's are EXTREMELY minor...

Take Ardmore 3 head, finish it in black/greyish. Silver putter shaft (not the black that come with the red ones) and change the insert color to red. Of course they can't do Pingman, but, could throw the TM skinny stock grip on.

Literally the ONLY change - black grey head with red insert. Pretty sure they have some silver putter shafts laying around. Done.

What's very intriguing to me is what they'll charge for it or if they'll do it premium.....like the PROTO irons....

Would be a cool touch to see them thrown in that TW headcover that he has.

Here's to hoping.

DJ's Spider Mini gamer has a Surlyn insert. His black spider has the 80/20 insert. At retail, the black spider has the 80/20, the red spider has the Surlyn, and the Spider Mini's have a thicker aluminum insert that's supposed to feel in between the Surlyn and the 80/20.

I suspect they're waiting to see him persevere with it for an extended period before they go to market with a TW Edition. Would be a little embarrassing if he switched back to his Scotty just after launch ...

For anyone looking for a poor man's version, I recommend trying the Tommy Armor Impact 3. Similar shape, fantastic feel and less than half the price. Even though I don't think it will replace my Anser, I'm tempted to pick one up to have on hand given how cheap they are.

...

Finally (and strangely) they told me they do not have the tool that removes the sole weights. It's a three prong wrench and TM is sold out of it.

...

If it's 3 prong the Adams clubs used that. It looked like a triangle. Probably find one cheap off ebay?

Yeah I agree. Wouldn't want a repeat of the DJ Spider release where he ditched it a week after it finally came to market. Then went back, then ditched it etc. Day pretty much did the same with a short stint with an Ardmore and it has to have some impact on sales when the players move on. I think once Tiger plays it for 6 months you can assume its in the bag for a while and that's when we will see TM do a specific release.

I hope they stick with an exact identical putter to his with a cool Tiger pattern headcover and slim rubber TM branded GolfPride grip. That would be fantastic.

Some good points here!! A couple more thoughts..... he's playing out of his mind and putting well. I can't see him ditching it over the next two months and definitely not before the Ryder Cup (which he should make). He also just fired his lowest sunday round in a major EVER with it. EVER. And, if that putt on one goes (which wiggled a LOT) that's a 63 and possible his 15th major. So, I don't see him ditching it any time soon...

Also, DJ has bounced around but the Black Spider seems to always comes back....yes the Mini is the putter of the moment. But, he's won with the Spider black and certainly hasn't ditched it. Day has been going on 2+ years with the red Spider.

Players are always going to tinker, but, if TM releases this it will sell like CRAZY even if he ditches it.

Final point, you've never been able to REALLY get Tiger's putter. Sure the old NP2s are close, but, there was no retail model that exactly mirrored it in terms of head shape. Some had the minor offset plumber neck, some had the oval insert but none of them have ALL of the design elements together, especially GSS. The thought of getting something that is essentially identical (especially given the insert is the same) is pretty darn cool, IMO.

This one would be awfully close absent Tiger's "secret shaft" (whatever it actually is) and the Pingman grip (which is a $5 add on). They could even go 2.5 weights and bam, there you have it.

I'm a huge dork, but, as someone who idolized him as a kid, I really hope they do this!

As I said, you make some great points. But, I think he will keep using it and I'm not sure if it even matters if he does!

Yeah, I agree that he will keep using it as well. Being that it is so close to an off the shelf stock putter I really hope TM doesn't do a short run limited release for your very point. It's unbelievable to finally be able to buy something that is so close to the identical putter he is using instead of something made out of unobtanium. Kudos for TM doing that with the Spiders already and I hope they continue.

I agree! But, Mula is very plugged in; he's never lead me wrong before. I bet this 100% happens. GRRRR.

In another thread about this, someone mentioned that the NECK is slightly different on TWs, too. Was shaped to match the 8802 that TW often practices with....will be very interesting to see if the released one has that neck or if they go "Tiger-inspired" like they did with the early release Day and DJ Spiders that were CLOSE but surely not identical....

Y'all know that there is another thread in Tour Equipment on TW's Ardmore 3 (15 pages to date); contains answers to y'all's questions about the insert and replicating his version

To be fair that thread was discussing Tigers USE of the Ardmore 3, etc. This thread is regarding RECREATING an Ardmore to mirror/match the specifics. Not sure those are one in the same....

Doing a refinish would be simple for any talented shops like Putter Spa, Golf Garage, etc.

Tiger doesnt use the black copper finish. His is flat black bordering dark grey.

Not trolling, but, I'm not sure that's accurate. Taking out TM's inserts is a very complicated and delicate procedure involving parts that are not readily accessible. This is explained above. The epoxy holding the insert in will melt in the refinish process. It must be removed BEFORE that and re-adhesived with the same tape/adhesive. If you ask a lot of refinishers, they are either not aware of this or can't get the adhesive.

So, it's not simple. I had a Spider botched as a result of this. Luckily, the refinisher was an honest guy, felt bad, refunded me and acknowledged that Spiders are a completely different animal (insect - rim shot). He was like "wow, this is a complicated putter, I had no idea."

Not being argumentative, trust me. I figured it'd be simple/easy, too. It's not.

Because the guys at BOS worked at TM, they had the adhesive tape/whatever and knew how to do it.

If I let you putt with my botched Spider and BOS's Spider, you would know within one putt that one was ruined.

**Disclaimer** Putter Spa, Golf Garage MAY HAVE the parts and know how to do it. But, not everyone does. If they don't, they'll ruin the putter.

Golf garage can do it easily... simple process as stated.

I bought the Ardmore 2 L neck in red this past winter and practiced with it on my indoor putting green throughout the winter season. I think the red looks sharp. I found it quite interesting that I purchased mine way back last winter and Tiger changed to it this golf season. Sort of made the purchase more attractive. One of the characteristics I purchased it for was it had some toe hang to it, which isn't the most common thing for mallet putters.
