Recreating Tiger’s new putter

Yes, the only difference on the Ardmores is color. And, according to trustworthy sources, Tiger's is the aluminum. It's just red on his putter. Kinda cool that we can get a VERY similar putter in the Armore red...only difference is weight ports (his are lighter), grip, and the True Temper shaft that he uses which is hard to find.

 

As for your broader question, of all TM putters, here is what I've learned.....Tons of research, discussions with TM people, etc. This is hardly all of them, but, some of the most popular in the last several years....

 

Copper Ardmores - aluminum (red color)

Red Ardmores - aluminum (black color)

DJ Spider - 80/20 (silver)

Day Spider - surlyn (black)

My Spider - 3 MM aluminum (can change color)

New Spider Tours - firm surlyn

double bend spider from two years ago 80/20

 

Simple right?!?! ha! As a LONG time Spider user, and now Ardmore 3, it's extremely difficult to keep all this straight. They are very different however. The Jason Day red with surlyn is extremely soft and the sofTEST IMO. I believe the hardest would be the DJ aluminum. The others are all somewhere in between. After years of changing my mind, if I had to pick one, it'd be aluminum (in the new Ardmores, DJ). It just get the ball rolling more on long putts. The Day can feel like a cotton insert at times.

Its kind of related, but a little off... Is Kia Ma still designing/crafting for Taylormade? I always loved his TP models of the past.

Yup! Ardmore reds and copper are the same save the color and neck. I have heard that TWs neck is ever so slightly different than the slant neck on the reds.....hard to see visually however! I heard his was modeled after an 8802 that he practices with

Funny man....I hate red, but, I brought it out before I sent it off and had 3 birdies in 8 holes. That's a lot for me. Clearly it's not THAT bad. And, as I said earlier in the thread, the white stripe is pretty slick for alignment.

I got mine in yesterday and played my first round with it today. Made a couple good putts, but the putts I missed were a lot better. The ball definitely came off the face faster. Although I’m not sure how much of it has to do with the fancy insert, more likely that it’s the extra weight. It felt very stable for a small mallet, and I liked it.

Definitely growing on me. Just had to add a lot of leadtape.

Have mine with Continental right now. Have been going back and forth on finish and we settled on something halfway between the black satin and a matte black. Should be close to what Toger has.

 

As someone mentioned above, will end up with an all black bottom and the black insert (unlike Tiger’s red). But am actually pleased with that. Black on Black should look cooler. Ping blackout grip obviously.

 

Should be done in a couple of weeks. Pics to come.

Has anyone else seen this with their insert? Whatever is filling the grooves seems to be perishing. My putter is only 3 weeks old but it seems to be getting worse each time I play.

 

Not so sure about the overall quality control with the Ardmore as mine is 1/4 inch shorter and 1.5 degrees more upright than my Spider. Both were ordered as standard spec and according to TM's website should be the same at 34" and 70 degrees lie.

 

Will take it back to the shop on Monday and see what they think.

Ah I picked up the original all red without the white stripe. I’m sure I’ll still end up “Tiger-fying” mine before long.

How is it totally different? I see difference in sightline vs dot, different stamping and no vertical lines on the neck. What else are there?

Neck, bumpers, shoulders, top line all quite different from the regular Juno. Yes general shape is roughly similar but besides that, there is as little in common as there was between Tigers putter and a regular Newport 2 Scotty Cameron.

Not the same one at all. Perhaps he likes the insert and the roll it gives him, but this is basically a TM version of his old Scotty.

Agree with the above.

Tiger's Scotty was quite a bit different than other Newport 2's / Timeless heads. Even the neck placement was different. Scotty did lots of handwork on the bumpers and shoulders as well. All to please Tiger's eye.

Wonder who did the work on the TM putter?

I'm surprised to see Tiger going with an insert. Quite a different feel than a solid, milled head like his GSS. But hey, whatever gets the ball in the hole!

100 agree....offset neck, oval cavity with zero modifications on the oval. It’s s Juno in spirit, that’s all

The black paint peels off (been using Ardmore 3sincr December). It happens with the red spider too. It bothered me at first but now I don’t care at all.

This putter has been out since the beginning of this year. It's the black copper Ardmore 3. Tiger's was all black, no copper, and his did not have the L neck. His was basically the red version with a different paint scheme.

Look closely at the pics. This one doesn’t have the L neck either. It’s the copper finish with the slant neck
