Golf Fitness Overrated?

The golf world has been so focused on specific things for golf fitness has its lost its way? I am not saying working out is overrated but should you be doing things to make your overall body stronger and stop worrying about them being specific to your golf swing? Heck Brooks has won 3 of the last 7 majors working out like Mike O'Hearn.

If you think Koepka is just busting out some deadlifts and bench presses for his workouts your wrong. Check out kolbywayne and joeydgolf on instagram and you can see what kind of workouts his trainer focuses on. Like everything in life, the best results come from a variety of approaches.

Here is Koepka throwing a med ball if you want some proof.

Agree but how many golf fitness guys are doing 225, 14 times and can easily do 315? NFL football players yes but golfers?

Seeing how DJ and Brooks are playing, not overrated. Joey D trained for Golf fitness. I’m pretty sure every guy on tour who works out incorporates Exercises with the golf swing in mind.

I play golf and I'm not a bodybuilder, so I'm not sure why it would make sense to do anything other than tune my workout toward golf. What else would I focus it toward?

I used to work out compulsively when I was younger, but I couldn't tell you why I was there other than to 'get stronger'. I had no functional purpose to what I was doing.

I don't think this is unique to golf. I can't think of a sport where those that do it for a livelihood don't train in a way that's functionally tuned to their sport. I'm not sure there's anything about that arrangement that would conclude me to believe that golf fitness has lost its way...

Are you specifically referring to something like overtraining, or simply training to perform a task better?

If you dont sacrifice flexibility, strength, explosiveness and endurance can only help with golf. Especially at the highest level where the edge is so thin.

Definitely agree. As long as you maintain flexibility and joint health then I don’t see how a normal full body workout plan could hurt. But if you get too thick then you might need to shorten the back swing and adjust a little.

Koepka isn't jacked either and his body transformation is pretty much in line with his age and where his body was when he was 17. The issue with a lot of workout routines (not all) in golf is that they don't properly account for the amount of stress that a Tour player puts on their lower back.

I think that with more research and trial and error, we are finally starting to see some trainers create workouts better suited for competitive golf.

I play most rounds after pretty intense work outs. I used to take off on a tourney day but found I played worse.

In the end, for those are used to it, it's just like stretching. Routine is the key for him it seems. Just another Sunday. Good approach I think.

Funny my TPI guy told me to stop doing bench press as it hurts the golf swing. I guess Joey D knows something he doesn't know

My TPI guy said something similar. However, (provided I'm understanding him correctly) he said that's because I'm already limited in upper body flexibility, including my pecs. Most people do bench presses to build up their chest, but they don't really do much to keep their pecs flexible. That can affect "ideal" posture by bringing the shoulders forward, and tight pecs can affect a "free" golf swing. We still do bench presses (albeit with dumbbells and usually coupled with leg movements to work the abs), but it ls followed up with an exercise designed to "open up" my pecs. So I'm still building the strength, but also improving flexibility.

Most professionals do well on the TPI screens, but many of them still have some limitations -- and they have grooved their swing to work around them. However, I forget where I read it (it's somewhere on mytpi.com or TPI's facebook page I believe) but the article or video talked about Brooks Koepka not having any physical limitations according to the TPI screen. So even though he may be able to bench 225 14 times, he isn't hurting his flexibility much (likely due to the rest of the workout that we never see).

Additionally, this following article was written by Marc Wahl, who is Koepka's on site trainer. He details about the focus of training golf professionals during the season is for them to maintain their current strength and flexibility. "Improving" either of those can have a detrimental impact on the golf swing because their body will feel different. I very well could be wrong, because I really don't know what Koepka's actual goals are, but fitness-wise he may be at a higher level than many others, so it might look like a grueling workout, but it's probably "just right" for him to maintain what he already has. Plus Koepka's swing instructor Claude Harmon is a TPI guy as well, so his teaching likely is centered around what Koepka's body allows him to do.

http://www.mytpi.com...eational_golfer

In working with my TPI instructor and reading Fix Your Body, Fix Your Swing by Joey D, the current line of thinking is that golfers have different fitness needs than other sports. I personally love it because it really adds variety to going to the gym, so I'm more likely to keep at it because I'll admit that I used to get bored doing the same exercises over and over.

The things that make people better athletes are pretty similar sport to sport for most part. Getting better at compound movements and rapidly producing force will have carryover to basically all athletics.

The problem is "golf fitness" is usually crap like doing squats on a bosu ball or push ups on 3 fingers.

I've still yet to see TPI make someone really athletic. It's just a bunch of garbage.

Why are your workouts only for golf? Do you not want to be more athletic, more healthy?

It always is strange to me how everyone tries to put their training as for golf. How about for your health and life first and then your hobby second.

TPI has been pushing this and have influenced a whole lot of fitness professionals who are thinking only this way

First of all: there are tons of different trainers with multiple "right" ways to do things. You can find 2 trainers in the same gym with 2 completely opposite approaches.

Secondly: this is just my observation but this year was my first opportunity to go to a PGA Tour event (the Masters) and see these guys up close and personal. I was surprised at how much MORE athletic all these PGA tour guys look in person compared to HD TV. It changed my opinion greatly and IMO most of them look much more fit than your average golfer out on the course.

It’s all about $$$. “Golf fitness” is an industry just like any other. Advocating for its importance = pushing a product.

Muscles are dumb. Train them to do whatever you want.

Want to train them for golf? Train them for golf.

Want to train them for basketball? Train them for basketball.

Want to train them for 'life'? I guess you need to work out what your 'life' is... Writing your first novel on your Mac in SBUX? Watching TV and eating Doritos? Anything's possible...

Ya so how in the world does doing a wood chopper translate to golf? Do squats to train your body, and golf to get better at golf. The tpi crap is just that, crap. Any weighted moment that resembles a golf swing is basically a joke from an athletic standpoing
